Why do tech companies release so many phones/tablets?

Any insight here? I just read that Blackberry (in the midst of exiting the consumer market) has decided to work on only four phones. I NEVER understood why they had 40 different phone models out at a time, it seemed like it was very inefficient for producing the units, developing apps for them, and for consumers to figure out what's going on.

Now I see that there are going to be like three versions of the MS tablet. Why do companies keep doing this to themselves?

I always liked how Apple kept their product lines limited and differentiated.

3 types of MS tablet? as far as I know they only unveiled the Surface RT 2 and Surface Pro 2..and with a 512Gb 8Gb ram option that is going to be a great tablet

Maybe they're trying to appeal to both newcomers and longusers with being low phone to high-tech phones. I believe it's all about business.

I don't know, give you more choice?

Much like Samsung releasing basically the same phone design with different screen size. Chances are, you find one you may like, over the competitors with limited choices. Already, I think apple lost a lot of customers due to the smallise iphone display.

I myself is looking for a good phone with a slightly bigger display.
