The spaces between realities!

As spotted by Bleeping Computer, when Microsoft rolled out the May 2020 update for Windows 10, it introduced a bug to the Optimize Drives feature causing it to incorrectly determine the last time a drive has been optimized. When you open it up, you might notice your SSD says "Needs optimization" even if the routine was recently run (Windows 10 handles this automatically).

What ends up happening is Windows 10 defrags your SSD each time your reboot your system. I was able to confirm this on my own PC, though fortunately, I hardly ever reboot. Where this is most harmful, however, is for users who turn off and turn on their PCs daily, which causes Windows 10 to defrag their SSD once a day in some instances.

Apparently Microsoft is planning to roll out the fix to the general public with an upcoming update. At this point, it's probably best to hang tight. However, you can sidestep the issue by typing 'Defrag and Optimize Drives' in the Windows 10 search box, then highlight your SSD, click 'Change settings', and uncheck 'run on a schedule'.

I swear every year I'm going to drop Windows and revert entirely to the latest Linux kernal version. The only things keeping me on are game support and laziness.

I don't think I'm at the May update yet. It might be ready but haven't used the PC much the last few weeks and the last time I checked it said it was still coming. That said I support plenty of Win10 devices with SSDs and plenty would be on the newest update already.

Everytime an (Auto) update is long S time of trouble shooting , long S slowdown and restarting.

Over 3 Decades of Operating system, MS still can’t get stability right.

Yeah, I lost 1% percent health on two SSDs (according to Hard disk Sentinel) before I turned off the scheduled optimization. Norton actually turned it on. I also moved my game recording temp folder off the SSD as well thinking that might have been the reason.

WTH.

Can't give up that game support though.

Elaborate please. I'll happily explain.

Windows 10 game support?

Most of us would have a PC for other purposes even if we didn't game on it. So we would have this problem regardless of whether or not we did most of our gaming on consoles. Even if a console is a better deal that's not really relevant when someone has work related reasons for owning a PC.

PC gaming is just a different animal from consoles. I have over 300 games because of all these giveaways and sales. The more games you get the more you kinda feel like staying in the PC ecosystem. Plus, most of the games will scale nicely when you upgrade your hardware.

Also I like being able to customize the output image. TAA is really incredible at dealing with jaggies, but it can make the image a bit blurry. Being able to apply smart sharpen algorithms in post processing is quite nice. And I always optimize for 60+ fps no matter what hardware I have. I'll adjust the resolution/settings accordingly to make sure I can get a stable framerate.

Huh?

My PC is for entertainment.
Need game support.

I turned it off. Don't need any extra BS on my SSD RAID0 array.

Do not forget about mods.

This is why I will get cyberpunk absolutely on PC.

Guessing he means if it wasn't for gaming he'd use Linux or something?

I actually think he meant how I feel, that my PC is for so many things that I enjoy and wish there were better games for it.

Linux? I'm good with Windows no matter how much people want to s*** on it. Actually, I'm the only one left in my family that still has a Windows PC as their main hub, everyone else has moved into the Apple ecosystem, which I will never do. f***l iTunes f*** Apple I got my own ecosystem going on and Windows and Android respect the way I do things at least.

When I bought my last SSD I didn't really understand the different kinds of Nvme drives and how long they last. I ended up buying a cheap QLC 3DNand drive while I could have bought a TLC one, same capacity, same price, only 6x more lifetime writes.

Moved away from Windows years ago. Once I stopped gaming on a PC there was no point in using it as my OS.

I just switched my backup PC back to Windows from Ubuntu Budgie because an update borked my VirtualBox setup. It was functioning as a media server and I had it setup to run Windows 10 (at startup) in the background for a few programs I needed to have everything 99% automated.

Now it's back on Windows since the motherboard already had an OEM key associated with it.

Linux is far from convenient. I've tried Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Vanilla, Kubuntu, Fedora, Solus, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, etc.

There was a lot of documentation, so you end up just cutting and pasting until something works, but Windows is just plug and play.

I've heard Lutris works just fine, but I had to do a custom fan curve with GPU Tweak II and I also have my PC setup to cut off my second monitor once I launch a game and you can't do any of that easily on Linux.

Yep, like I said - Once I no longer used my PC for gaming there was no point in sticking with it (mainly because the constant updates annoyed the f$%k out of me). Never going back now that I've been on Mac OS for 6 or 7 years.

I had Bitport setup to download feeds automatically (on Ubuntu Budgie) and I had to use a Windows VirtualBox to set it up because they didn't have a Linux program available. I also had a sorting program that was only available through windows. So once the Windows 10 VirtualBox wouldn't start automatically I just installed Windows back on the system. I just got tired of managing my Emby library manually.

I had a nice little fake MacOS theme going and everything, but once it stopped working properly, I just had to get rid of it. It took a long while to get it working the way I wanted and once it stopped, I was really done with it.
