Windows 11 - Free Update, But Is Your PC Worthy? BUT WAIT There’s A WORKAROUND

So you can use Apple products and software without an Apple account? I had no idea.

Apple is just as annoying with the accounts. I don't remember having to create a MS account before to use Windows. Why can't we just go back to that.

I have had far worse experiences after upgrading Mac OSs than I did with Windows OSs. That said, I'm currently on Windows 10, and while it wanted me to create (well, in my case, link) a Microsoft account, I was able to avoid doing so. Hopefully that will be the case with Windows 11 as well.

For me it’s been with my phone and updating iOS, several times have I lost info, photos and whatevs or everything during the update. Sometimes after I just get ever persistent bugs that I have to do a hard reset. But I think the biggest issue may be me. I’m always on the verge of maxing out my memory lol

I've got SOLUS up on virtualbox. I love the budgie desktop. I think I'll probably just stick to Solus or Ubuntu Budgie from now on after trying KDE, Linux Mint, Kbuntu, Fedora, Elementary OS. The issues I had with the KDE desktop are more about my customizations getting screwed after an update. The budgie desktop is beautiful enough that you don't have to do anything, I just use the default settings. UBUNTU vanilla is absolutely terrible, so I uninstalled it immediately.

Edit: I ended up switching my backup PC back to Linux Mint from Windows 10. I tried Solus, but it wouldn't install for some reason. The Cinnamon environment isn't as beautiful as the budgie environment, but it's not an eyesore.

Windows 11 will require TPM 2.0, which will limit some compatibility. It isn't a terrible thing, but isn't needed by everyone. It allows things like Bitlocker to encrypt the hard drive, something I do not need on my gaming PC. For anything work related? Sure, but my desktop PC doesn't need encryption.

It is wise to sit back and wait I think and see how this all plays out. It might be fine, but then again, there's facts behind the "every other windows release is terrible" meme. It has been largely true.

Not sure why anybody even cares. Unless I missed something Windows 11 is just a visual change. No idea why they couldn't have just added this to Windows 10 and made the visual changes, which are only small changes, as a new theme option.

lol, prebuilt.

"It's a feature mainly intended for enterprise customers to be able to lock down the corporate PCs they drop into their offices and make sure they don't get compromised.

And if you're upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 then you don't have to worry about VBS being enabled, unless you were already running an enterprise version of the older OS, that is. The issue comes if you're receiving a machine which has had an OEM build of Windows 11 installed on it."

As long as we can turn it off it isn't a big deal. The problem is when MS has this "one size fits all" mentality with stuff that fails. My gaming PC locked up in my house doesn't need the same security as corporate IT. OEM shouldn't matter, there should still be an OEM home vs enterprise version.

OEM manufacturers love to upsell people on the OS, even though all anyone needs is Win 10 home. Even working in IT all I need is to be able to remote desktop out which Home can do just fine.

Why wouldn't we give this info clicks?

I gotta go back and look?

This is old stuff. From memory someone was having a fit because they would need to have a Microsoft account and internet access to update Windows.

Like, obviously.

This is coming from me who HATES having to create an account for every single f'n thing these days.

I think Microsoft is pretty reasonable with that stuff.

I also think it's reasonable that you have an account with Microsoft and also internet access to do the update.

You have to ask yourself "what will this upgrade do to improve what I have now" and balance that with the early adopter risk.

For me it is a no-brainer to wait and see what happens. It isn't going to make my gaming run any better (and might actually hurt).

It isn't like hardware where an upgrade is almost always going to be a noticeable improvement.

I might be building a new rig in the next few months and maybe I'll just start on 11, but no way am I rushing out to upgrade what I have. There's just no real reason to. I even work in IT and even I won't bother looking at it until I get some time down the road. We'll have years to get up to speed on it.

It's supposed to be out today.

My windows update didn't show that I could upgrade to Win 11 even though the PC check says my PC is eligible for the free upgrade 🤔

I'm going to test drive this on my work computer before I update my home computer.

I decided to go full guinea pig like the total moron I am and just go for it.

I'm praying to the 1's and 0's gods to take it easy on me. I'm not in the mood for f'n up my HTPC and yet I'm trying it out anyway.

I mean, what could go wrong?

It works fine.

I think I like it to be honest. Not sure what the benefits might be, but glad it seems to be working without a hitch for me so far.

Famous last words.

I actually love Windows 11 so far.

But I'm not a power user or big gamer or anything. I just want Windows to feel like Windows, and oddly I'm liking it a lot. The bloatware was right in my face on the new "start menu", no tiles or other crap, nice and clean. Yeah it installed Whatsapp, some Coreldraw thing, Microsoft Teams and probably another 10 things I have no interest in and a simple right click and uninstall and it's gone.

Much appreciated.

And it feels faster to me, and a quick glance at the taskmanager, there is practically nothing going on, or taskmanger is lying to me.

Just saying it's working out for me so far, could have been a disaster. There's going to be some learning I suppose but this feels like a really cleaned up version of Windows, and I feel like they're letting me make it the way I want so far.

Windows 10 won’t be stopping any time soon I hope? How long do they normally let an older OS run for before laying it to rest please?
I don’t know exactly, this may help.

But we may be good for another four years.

So the only major issue I've ran into so far is something f'd is going on when I transfer photos from my phone to my desktop.

Keeps telling me the photo format is "either not supported or file is corrupted", go into properties on the photo and it's JPG......?????

My workaround, email my phones photos to myself and it works.

wtf is that? I probably should have just stayed on Windows 10 but too late.

Otherwise everything seems fine, but it's a really "meh" thing. I just couldn't help myself.

I just waited for it to become available in my Windows update instead of running out to get the ISO. This feels like a glorified Windows 10 update with a reskin. EVERY program and customization I had setup in Windows 10 works EXACTLY the same in Windows 11. I've never upgraded and had everything just work right out of the box like this.

I suspect that they did this because there are too many cheap Windows 10 keys out there and they are likely to change how they do their licensing to avoid that in the future.
