Windows 8.1

I heard Microsoft just pulled 8.1 down because of big problems with RT tablets. I found that out literally two seconds ago when I came across a microsoft tech support forum on how to disable touchpad charms swipe. I don't know if it affects PC at all, but that's what I've found.

I've upgraded t0 8.1 on my laptop, no issues. The update was only pulled for RT. It was only affecting some users not all, and there is a fix if you get a 'boot configuration file is missing' message.

Windows 8.1 mouse lag reportedly renders some PC games "close-to unplayable"

that the major system update has introduced insurmountable lag to games including Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Metro: Last Light and STALKER: Call of Pripyat.

The issue appears to lie with Windows 8.1’s new DPI framework for multiple monitors, which has interfered with usual communication between the mouse and the OS. Games that don't read raw mouse data, like those above, have developed a sluggishness not exactly conducive to hacking in Deux Ex, for instance.

I'll hold off on 8.1 until such a time as I need it or information comes out that it improves my gaming experience by a significant amount.

I can no longer post on here off my tablet for some reason.

If you are running Win 8, then definitely do the upgrade to 8.1. Very nice refinements and options over 8.

Such as?

Keep in mind my Win8 has acted like Win7 (start button, starting @ classic desktop) since I installed it. What else has changed?

really don't want to type it out. I'm sure you can either find articles or go to Best Buy and try things out. You'll know when you spend a couple of minutes with it. Regardless, it is free for those that bought Windows 8 and the new Mail app and other app updates are worth it alone.

Smaller icons on Start Screen may not seem much, but it's a much needed improvement, especially on desktops where you'll want to keep everything in one screen without ever scrolling. The basic apps are all improved and are very usable on all platforms, and you can't use them on 8. Many other desktop-exclusive functions are integrated into Metro interface, which gives the OS more consistency. Just to name a few.

I'm contemplating going back to Windows 7 SP1, just until MS get their s*** together.

8.1 has been causing way too many issues for many different types of configs and everyone I've dealt so far is either asking for Win 8 (pre 8.1) or Win 7.

I can live with 5-7 less fps in BF4.

Well I wasn't expecting you to type or even paste patch notes, just thought maybe there was one or two really cool things you liked about it.

Also, Battlefield 4 seems to run best on Windows 8.1.

Which is nice, but...

This. I'll be playing the hell out of BF4, so the improved performance would be nice (at least until early december when I do my new build that should smash BF4). But until 8.1 gets a clean bill of health (read: I'll not have to worry about issues with other games/programs) across the board I'm happy with win8.

8.1 is much more refined and enjoyable to use now. I am in love with it as a tablet os. Having a touch screen laptop or all-in-one makes Windows 8.1 sing but even as a traditional mouse and keyboard desktop OS its good to me. Then again, I don't do the PC gammas thing anymore so ymmv.

It's what 8 should have been from the first place. Still needs improvements, but it fixes what was needed most. Not sure about start button though, the hotspot was a better idea.

I didn't miss the start button, and if there was an easy way to disable it in 8.1 I would. I updated my gaming desktop, and my personal laptop to 8.1. I am quite fond of the new Windows 8 interface for certain tasks. If you depend on your PC for work, it may not be best to update just yet. Our CAD guy updated to find that Autodesk Inventor didn't run AT ALL on 8.1 without a patch.

I wasn't up to updating yesterday, but now I'm even more not up to it. I've got not problem with win8 as it is, they've convinced me to change the way I think about the start menu, why have me change again just for a point one... as far as I can tell there's not much else changed that I really need to care about. (This is from the video they have offered on the site telling me what differences it will make.)

I upgraded to 8.1, well actually I did the "8.1 ISO trick" and used my Win 8 Pro key to activate it, but drivers were a small issue for me, mainly my USB 3.0 ones.

Sorted it out by obtaining 8.1 drivers for a different version motherboard (weird), but all is smooth now.

When it runs as it should, 8.1 isn't going to affect anyone's PC any more than Win 8 did.

Booting into desktop, being able to remove the charms on screen and even a simple shut down from the start button (via right clicking) were all worth the change for me.

Games are meant to be seeing a benefit too in the not too distant future (supposedly).

I did a fresh install of 8.1 after putting it off for awhile. Its starting to grow on me. I like the smaller Metro icons, but I pretty much stick with "Boot to Desktop"

Edit: I went from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8.1 Pro

has anyone tried the new 8.1 yet
is it safe to install?
hate to brick my computer

Yes, I have it on my new PC.
It's garbage.

Software works, but it's more important for MS to lock you into their services than supporting the stuff you allready have in win 7.
All the software bundled with windows 8.1 is garbage, it's like the developers said.. Hey, remember win 3.11, that had some cool stuff - let's make all our menus look like it were built for that, and have them fly out from the sides of the monitor, and let people search through a dozen sub-menus to get to where they want.
Ignore that users expect something wich have the functionality we introduced in Win 95 and later versions...

The bundled Win 8.1 Mail-client, is not compatible with MS windows 7 bundled mail-client export/import-features, and win 7 mail-client looses support early 2014.

So be prepeared to manually type in a dozen e-mail-accounts if you have that.
Can't have you transfer e-mail accounts via USB-sticks, that's way to risky.
Much safer to export your e-mail accounts via the MS clouds into the new software - and then they can bring them back down into the new client.

But that didn't work for me.

Also when installing win8 - I were wondering when I were going to get to create my user-password for windows, but nothing ever came up, and my first resets went without prompting for a password.
After getting back on my new PC - after plugging all the stuff back into my old PC just to export my e-mails into the MS clouds - suddenly I were asked for a password to start windows - after 10-15 minutes of guessing, I tried the password I had created exporting email-accounts into MS-clouds.
But there were no notification that this would also become my windows-password, when I set up that account.

- the new bundled 8.1 windows e-mail client looks like webpage with web-email, not like proper software e-mail client like Outlook or Live Mail.
- in the end I gave up and found a proper third party e-mail client - wich dosn't lock account-export into MS formats - and found a hacking site wich could decode all the stats on my various e-mails.

Also the new preview-software is horrible - when opening a jpg/pdf-file, you downloaded, you can easily view it, but then you want to store it locally for later use, it's ridickolous.
Can't use a normal windows file-save crap - up comes a custom win 3.11 thingy - and prompts you to save to Microsoft skydrive..
- and then you have to do half a dozen fileclick to navigate before you find your local computer..
- want a new folder? impossible...
- you can't do that here, you said you were going to save this file, not create new folder - to create a new folder, you need to manually create a new folder with the windows explorer.
- click to next picture, to save picture number two - you want to save microsoft skydrive? no remembering where you last saved in same preview session..

- I were searching for my USB-stick with my old Win 7 backup - but unfortunately I couldn't find it.
- Now I'm crossing my fingers for SteamOS having basic computer-functionality - I don't think Win 8.1 is even redeamable.
Several 'help-files' even tells me to touch my monitor, despite having a non-tablet copy of windows 8.1..

I have none of the issues you are describing

-Windows Live Mail works with 8.1
-Want to use the old Windows Image viewing? Right click a .jgp, etc and pick "Open With--Windows Image Viewer" make it default.
- http://i.imgur.com/7i1ygTq.jpg "folders" on the start menu also, File Explorer, not really hard
-Don't know what you mean by saving files to skydrive, but my default to Documents, Pictures, etc

I have two Windows 8.1 PC both of which thanks to the "Cloud" all my settings, layout, apps are the same on both PCs.

Did you get to set your own windows-password, or did it steal the one you made for outlook.com?

It's pretty neatly customized menu you have there, when I get home I'll take a screen of mine..

When I searched for Live Mail win 8, MS Norways webpage told me support for Live Mail ends sometime in 2014, and is not supported at all on Win 8.1, it highly recomended me to use something else, and linked to the new crappy one - that's why I figured I could just aswell upgrade immediately.:-/ But it's alot better than the bundled 'mail reader app'.
I went with a third-party client though, wich will be easier via USB-stick, to transport between future computers, rather than the clouds.

Yes, I can select various different tools for png/jpg/pdf etc,
But I can't change out the previewer, I think.
It's pretty annoying to have to do it, because of some stupidity to make a custom file-save option, where they havn't bothered to put a 'create new folder' option.
Sure, i can go into my computer from start menu, but it's stupid, it's like creating a new keyboard with only the 0-5 digits on - and then add a new key called 'shift-plus', wich you can hold in and use to generate the remaining 6-9 digits.
Sure, you can have a fully functional keyboard and write all numbers, but it's much more extra hoops to jump through, than it used to be.. :-/

I'll see if I can post some images when I get home.. :-/

1. Windows 8 gives you the option to create a local account, its not easy or in front of your face but it's there. If you disconnect yourself from the Internet, Windows 8, 8.1 will default to the Local account and not the Outlook account during setup.
2. "Not supported" means MS won't help you fix it if it doesn't work ;) It will install though. You can always use "Thunderbird" which is made by the same people who do Firefox.
3. http://i.imgur.com/Wl4gOpV.png http://i.imgur.com/8UAE2bK.png the built in Photo app is lame

I installed it and hate how the metro stuff is full screen on everything, I have mine set to boot to desktop.

I installed Win 8.1 yesterday and thus far no real problems. Still figuring my way around though. Only thing I do not like is how all the Apps in Metro stay open unless you specifically mouse over the top corner and shut them down.

Installed 8.1 last Saturday and I think it's a big improvement. I don't use my laptop for gaming. Just music production and just interwebz stuff.
