Credit cards are a waste of money. Simple as that. I haven’t had one in years.
I have two of them. Statement balance is automatically paid in full each month to zero balance. Doesn't cost me a dime. Then I get Visa and AMEX gift cards from my points that I earned each month. So credit card companies are paying me to use their cards.

Same. I have my CostCo card and my Amazon card, plus a couple of backups without an annual fee that I never use but I have for emergency use.

If you have the money to spend you don’t need to use it on credit and risk getting those high interest rate charges.

At one point I had 7 credit cards open last year due to churning points and rewards, different CCs to maximize cashback and just keeping long credit history. Got 6 free lounge pass visits that normally costs 32 USD go to. Plus used promo points to get free flight tickets to San Francisco. Plus a few hundred dollars promo bonus for spending like 1k which we would be spending anyways throughout the year and we had some big purchases that came up. Then on the same card was able to get free foreign exchange fee for all my transactions and Uber rides. Credit cards promos are great for those who can use them responsibly. I also pay off all credit cards balances monthly.

You can avoid interest though. These days I rather pay with a CC than my Debit card.
Why? Debit cards never have interest and have all the same functionality as a credit card.

Idk about your location but up here in Canada land, credit cards get sign up promos and bonuses all the time with better cashback functions than our debit cards by a lot. Why not get that extra couple % on top if you are already spending ?

Plus the premium cards get first / second year free frequently which usually get free lounge pass visits or no foreign exchange fees or extra year product warranty etc.

Interesting. I am not sure if credit cards have all those extra bits over here (they probably do) because its been so long since I had one. I use a debit card from a company called Revolut (not sure you guys have that over your side) and I get lounge passes, no FX fees, free trading on shares (under a certain value), international travel insurance and other bits and pieces, including not having to worry about interest rates. I pay like 99 bucks a year for it.

Credit card interest should be illegal. I love how they advertise 25% compound interest as a selling point.

Anyway I just never carry a balance and pay it off in full, and get all the rewards. I know at least in the US, having a single card and paying it off will help your credit score a ton.

I'll never use a debit card, because if someone steals it, they drain my account.

So that's interesting the narrative about how your money is not safe if you use a debit card. This is misinformation at its best and you won't see any bank trying to correct it either (which in my opinion it should be their legal obligation to do). Your money is protected by your bank - simple as that. The nature of the protection is different between credit cards and your bank account (which your debit card is a key to). You are covered for theft regardless of what you use - where things get murky is if you buy something using your debit card only to find out it was a scam, you can run into trouble with charge backs. But if your account is hacked and your money is spent without your consent you can deal with the bank to get your money back. The difference with credit cards is that it is not your money until you use it - so if you can prove you didn't use it (aka in a scam situation) you don't need to concern yourself about charge backs.

I work in the industry and I see the sale numbers and incentive packages discussed trying to get people to stay on credit cards (which they absolutely do you want you to do) and it seems like its pretty effective from what I'm reading here.

Then they wouldn't exist. It absolutely should not be illegal. However, they should lower the interests rates dramatically. While the rates don't impact me since mine is auto paid in full every month, those that are making minimum monthly payments should not be subjected to 20%+ rates and needing 40+ years to pay it off.

If you have a s***ty credit rating because you suck at paying bills, THEN I can see a credit card company milking you. You deserve it.

People are dumb, but we also normalize this scam. At some point, it is easy to miss a payment. I remember when my credit card company went from paper to online without telling me, or without bothering to have an e-mail address for me.

And if you don't have a credit card? Well your credit score suffers because... reasons.

Also things like the US Mail just aren't trustworthy anymore.

Usury already is illegal, and 20%+ compound interest should fall under that. Funny how we put money into a savings account and might earn 1%. Then financial institutions turn around and loan us money at 25%.

We don't have that up here unfortunately. However all our debit cards with the banks are free with opening an account but the caveat is there is no incentive to use them unless the store only takes debit or cash. There is absolutely no reason to use a debit otherwise unless to take cash out.

If you have money management issues, I think you should stay away from credit cards or at least keep one to have your credit history started. I still have mine from highschool that I never use except for the odd drink here and there to keep it active and credit going. Otherwise I have a main card that gives me 3% cashback for everything if I redeem towards my internet/phone bill. And then several others for churning rewards and promo points.

Wealthsimple in Canada has free buy and sell for Canadian stocks and ETFs anyways so I don't need that part.

I think Biden should cancel everyone's credit card balances like he does for the people who probably don't even need the help.

Who covered the government to save banks from going bankrupt and forgiving them instead of letting capitalism play its roll of Darwinism in said environment should work for the people too.
