“All Games Play Better on Xbox Series X

Not only should gamers be able to play all of these games from the past, but they should play better than ever before. Backwards compatible games run natively on the Xbox Series X hardware, running with the full power of the CPU, GPU and the SSD. No boost mode, no downclocking, the full power of the Xbox Series X for each and every backward compatible game. This means that all titles run at the peak performance that they were originally designed for, many times even higher performance than the games saw on their original launch platform, resulting in higher and more steady framerates and rendering at their maximum resolution and visual quality. Backwards compatible titles also see significant reductions in in-game load times from the massive leap in performance from our custom NVME SSD which powers the Xbox Velocity Architecture. As I play through my personal backlog as part of our internal testing, all of the incredible games from Xbox One and earlier play best on Xbox Series X.

The team was not content to just rely on the increased hardware performance to improve your playing experience. The team developed new platform level capabilities to ensure all of your games continue to get even better. In partnership with the Xbox Advanced Technology Group, Xbox Series X delivers a new, innovative HDR reconstruction technique which enables the platform to automatically add HDR support to games. As this technique is handled by the platform itself, it allows us to enable HDR with zero impact to the game’s performance and we can also apply it to Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles developed almost 20 years ago, well before the existence of HDR.

In addition, the new Quick Resume feature was designed to not only work with new games, but it can also be enabled for backward-compatible titles. Quick Resume enables players to resume exactly where they left off, across multiple titles, ensuring gamers can get right back to the fun in an instant.

All of these advances happen at the platform level and require no additional work from title developers.

Advancing the State of the Art of Game Preservation

In addition to preserving the legacy of our loyal fans who have been with us since the beginning, we enable entirely new generations of gamers to play and enjoy the timeless games from our past while respecting and honoring their creators.

Beginning with Xbox One X, the compatibility team developed brand new innovations that could be applied to a hand curated list of titles to enhance them even further than what was possible when they were first created. Techniques such as the Heutchy method, which enables titles to render with increased resolutions up to 4K, or applying anisotropic filtering to improve the final image quality bring these classic games up to modern standards, better than ever before.

With all of the additional power and advancements of the Xbox Series X, the compatibility team now has a veritable playground of new capabilities to innovate and push the limits of game preservation and enhancement. The compatibility team has invented brand new techniques that enable even more titles to run at higher resolutions and image quality while still respecting the artistic intent and vision of the original creators. We are also creating whole new classes of innovations including the ability to double the frame rate of a select set of titles from 30 fps to 60 fps or 60 fps to 120 fps.”

Good lord, that is some serious stuff there. Holy crap. HDR in Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Xbox OG titles, performance free? W O W. And some games now 120fps? Crazy times my friends, crazy times.

All that back compatibility chatter is really amazing! Even though I don't have a huge backlog of games on the Xbox, it is incredibly nice to know that you can go back and play games all the way to OG Xbox. It is the option that counts here because the absence OF the option cannot be counted as a positive IMHO.

I think all those are things pushed by Microsoft and its positive (except Kinect) but it should be noted they weren't the first do some of those things.

Care to elaborate? Keep in mind we’re talking about the console space.

Sega did online first.
Scuff controllers and otgers been around for ages.
Nintendo did motion gaming first.
Game streaming was done last gen.
Didn't EA Access come before Gamepass.

Interms of not being first.

Well BC is an obvious one
PS Now came before Game Pass
Sony did cross buy long before Play Anywhere existed

That isn't a knock on them because they are still pushing these things harder and farther than anyone had before but it is still important to remember that gaming does exist outside of Xbox

Sega did online first but it sucked bigtime.
Microsft did it within a year and landed all the way to the bank.

You can be first but if it is not done where people can get on board, it means nothing.
MS was the first to do achievements, it was catching fire and SONY had to come up with their stupid trophies which came late.
MS also did party chat goes wat back to the original Xbox (through the dashboard).

Just to add to your list:

Xbox made the hard drive standard in a console
Broadband standard on console
Friends list on console
Game share
Looking for group
TrueSkill system and online matchmaking system
Xbox Insiders / Preview
that HDD goes back to the OG:og:
Also MS had their first 1080i game on the :og:

Think the OG xbox only had 2 player chat.

Why are acheivments good but trophies stupidd? They are the same thing presented in a different way.

The only thing I don't like about trophies is that you have to force the sync. With achievements, you don't. On the flip side, because of this, PlayStation allows you to earn and see trophies offline, where as on Xbox you need to connect online to see the achievements pop up.

See info like that IMO is game changing. Instead of a small press briefing MS should be shouting at the top of its lungs about this feature. Show a quick video of backward compatible software running better on the Series X with HDR to boot.

"Many of us in Team Xbox play on the Xbox Series X daily as our primary console and switching between generations is seamless. By the time we launch this holiday, the team will have spent well over 200,000 hours ensuring your game library is ready for you to jump in immediately."

Ronald also spoke with IGN, and when asked if "thousands" meant that the goal was every single Xbox One game – in addition the hundreds of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games already compatible with Xbox One that will also play on Xbox Series X – Ronald said, "The goal is definitely the thousands of titles that run on Xbox One today. If the game runs on Xbox One, it is our goal to get that to run on Series X. There might be some one-off exceptions here or there," he added, noting that "licensing or a technical issue" should be the only possible roadblocks. For instance, in the former case, a game with licensed music whose contract with the publisher has expired.

Even better, Ronald says that Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games will run better on Series X than they originally did. "All titles run at the peak performance that they were originally designed for, many times even higher performance than the games saw on their original launch platform, resulting in higher and more steady framerates and rendering at their maximum resolution and visual quality," Ronald said on Xbox Wire. "Backwards compatible titles also see significant reductions in in-game load times from the massive leap in performance from our custom NVME SSD which powers the Xbox Velocity Architecture."

When pressed for specific examples, Ronald said, “All of them are seeing a lot of benefits in certain areas.” As an example, he noted “titles that use dynamic resolution scaling – now it’s a rock-solid 4K or whatever its originally designed resolution was." HDR is among the new technologies being seamlessly retrofitted into older Xbox games. "Geometry Wars is one that I really enjoy. To actually see that in HDR..." he tailed off, also mentioning Boom Boom Rocket alongside the two games that have already had their post-generational HDR added, Halo 5: Guardians and Fuzion Frenzy.

Higher framerates are also in the mix: "The compatibility team has invented brand new techniques that enable even more titles to run at higher resolutions and image quality while still respecting the artistic intent and vision of the original creators," Ronald said in his blog. "We are also creating whole new classes of innovations including the ability to double the frame rate of a select set of titles from 30 fps to 60 fps or 60 fps to 120 fps." We asked about any specific 120fps examples, if you've got the TV for it, and Ronald noted that they do exist, but they can't confirm any quite yet. "In a lot of cases we have so much processing power in the Xbox Series X [that] what used to take a set number of milliseconds in prior generation consoles, it just runs through that computation so fast that the GPU is just sitting there waiting to do work." He continued: "But part of the challenge is that some titles actually base their physics or animation on [the framerate], so we're still figuring out what titles we can actually do this with without violating the original intent of the title. We definitely have some titles we've seen go from 30 to 60 and there's a handful of titles we've seen go from 60 to 120, but we're still in the process of validating the game end-to-end."

I found the red interesting.

Exactly. Microsoft should be plastering the BC stuff everywhere! The beginning of the gen is going to be cross platform for the most part. This is a good way to advertise your new console. It plays the games you already have with better graphics and no issues.

Sega did online first, but it was limited. MS made broadband standard, a move they were basically told was foolish, but not only did it work, it moved us toward better standards of online gaming on consoles.

EA Access and PS Now are similar, but not really the same as Gamepass and it’s full suite of features. Gamepass allows the user to download as many catalog games as they want, it follows across multiple platforms, it supports game share, it’s catalog includes third-party publishers, includes BC games, offers a reward and perk system, offers first party exclusives day one, and allows remote install and pre-install. It houses all those features, not just some of them.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen such overall positive reactions to anything X-related on Era as I’ve seen today with this info drop.

And I agree with the last few posts...they need to push this info to everyone on a consistent basis, and most importantly, show examples in a big way.

So you're saying MS's take on an already established idea had some new stuff. That's awesome.

Is anyone asserting that gaming does not exist outside Xbox? Being first is certainly one way of being innovative, especially as it relates to being perceived that way. What separates lasting innovation from everything else is the concept of improvement and moving forward.

Each company has done this to some point in their history.[/QUOTE]

You’re nothing if consistent.

Let put it another way. It’s not about the idea generation that led to the existence of a feature, product, etc. in this circumstance. Sometimes it is, but it’s more about the effect on moving things forward for the industry and how pronounced that is. To be fair, sometimes it is timing more than anything.

For example, Sony pushed the industry forward and away from the cartridge medium when Nintendo wouldn’t move on it. MS made broadband standard and by extension pushed console online gaming standards forward.

To speak to the example of Gamepass, the impact has been significant and has caused the industry to take notice and seriously consider it’s service. It’s subscribers have essentially passed PSNow by a factor of five and EA Access by a factor of three. It’s statistically significant and they have their ongoing innovative approach to thank for the adoption rate.

Edit: To add a little further, we’ve already been hearing from developers/publishers how Gamepass has opened things up for them and allowed them to accomplish things they weren’t able to before.

BC is easily one of the bright spots of the Xbox this gen. Spent a lot of time with older games. Most games from the 360 hold up with improved resolution and would hold up even better with better frame rate. We all miss good games so seeing old ones improved is a great excuse to check out something great we missed in the past.

Oddly ironic.

Dude, nobody disagreed. I gave you a fact. Then gave you sarcasm revolving around that fact. You're basically talking to yourself.

They did had a private chat, also a party chat as well.
I really don't think that iis right. Party chat, from what I recall, came on the 360....I beleive it was right around Gears of War 2 release. It was when everything changed and game lobbies turned into ghost towns. It was essentially the end of the great social Xbox Live.
