Are modern HDMI, and modern RCA audio cables not shielded?

I don’t know, that’s why I asked...I’ve seen speaker reviewers say to switch to optical because of high impedance frequencies and stuff I don’t know how to explain lol

VaLLiancE may know, I coulda swore we have an audio or two on this forum, as well

I was being sarcastic. Of course it's all shielded. EMI hasn't been an issue on things like this for a very long time. I would be much, much, much, more worried about RF interference on wireless headsets. The issue with TOSLINK optical is bandwidth related, only able to carry 2 channel uncompressed audio at the max.

Sometimes the size is off and the ladies look like giants... and now I can really relate to that one futurama episode with the Amazonian giant ladies.

Some good quotes from the interview:

On announcing new stuff: "We'll do things between now and the time where E3 was supposed to be. We'll do things throughout the Summer. We look at how teams can get stuff ready and how we can use digital formats to best deliver those experiences to our fans."

On Xbox Series X: "When I saw the public disclosure (of the specs on PS5), I felt even better on the choices we made on our platform. I had a lot of confidence in our hardware team. The work that Jason Ronald and the team has done is just fantastic."

"Our next-gen hardware tech makes games better, but ultimately the games are what will make people excited. That was one of the reasons why we revealed XSX with Hellblade II at TGA. The vast majority of our talks going forward will be about great games the people will play."

On Xbox first-party: "Our Xbox first-party roadmap has never been stronger. With more internal studios, we can now show more games that are further out as we know them and the resource planning so we can plan with confidence. We want to show more and we have a lot more to show."

"For XGS Publishing, we have unannounced signed things there we are really, really excited about. That team has found a rhythm on how we can deliver quality & the shipping. It's just maths now that everytime we are on a stage, we basically have to announce new (XGS) things."

"More important to me is that we have a great line-up of games coming. A great launch line-up is important, but for the momentum of a platform it's not about day one. It's about a transparent, sustained stream of great games coming from our first-party and third-party partners."

"A lot of veteran leadership at The Initiative and it's just cool to see things coming together. They are challenging themselves to try to do things in some different ways. They are gonna be very open about it. I can't wait to get to show what The Initiative is working on!"

"Some fans are asking for new IP. Some fans are asking to bring back games from our past. The balance between both is important. The mix that we have coming up is really strong there and it's something we spend a lot of time on. In the end, it's about shipping a great game."

Everything I've read is that HDMI is better than optical for sound. Hardly a loss aside from some compatibility issues. I stopped using it when I found out it cant do uncompressed sound

Still digital

Welcome to the mid 90s. Optical digital surround sound is dated and and am unsurprised to see it removed. It cannot do uncompressed audio at greater than stereo output and it's the surround sound formats it does support are lossy codecs that have been around since the mid 90s not to mention you need an extra damn cable. Good riddance toslink optical.

You listen to a nice DTS ES 6.1 mix on a nice AVR and tell me it doesn't sound amazing.
Extra cable?

So price discussion post Phil's interview.
449 with 6 months GamePass is my predicted price and I say that when he was discussing the removal of the Digital I/o and IR blaster. The component price over an entire production run is the tell. Saving on unnecessary components keeping the price of this beast within reach of the competition.

I have no doubt that the PS5 will be 399 and for a extra 45 bucks you get gamepass and a far superior machine.

Thoughts?

Not going into debate over if toslink is s***, but I'm pretty sure it'll be better sound quality over doing optical passthrough via my TV. I have the turtle beach elite 800x and optical is my only choice, not buying a new headset (this one wasn't cheap), so this bothers me.

remove the optical audio and hdmi pass through and it’s about another 20-30 bucks off, no?

I can't imagine they are more than $5/$10 for optical/HDMI, but who knows? He is saying that the added cost is over many units, though.

Interesting that nobody is asking what Wifi standard is in XSX. I mean, I have a Wifi 6 router, but all consoles and Roku are wired directly to that. It's not really why I'm asking. I would guess that Wifi 6 would be minimum this year... however Wifi 6E is almost out and uses the new 6 GHz spectrum for the first time. Where it would actually shine is in 2 categories. Game Streaming to your device and AR/VR. Not trying to include Wifi 6E now will become a helluva "whoops" in a year or 2 when it will be everywhere, and will also compliment 5G perfectly for inside the home.

You MIGHT be still able to do it through the tv though if your tv supports it...

Quality will not ever really be degraded in the digital realm, only interrupted. Digital signals either pass completely, partially, or not at all, unlike analog. Having to pass through another device will not matter to the signal, as long as no device is interrupting or adding latency.

Also, the beauty of a fiber optic cable is that it can run extremely long lengths without interruption. I actually had to buy an optical HDMI cable when I got my UHD projector because as I found out quickly, even with a high quality 30' cable, 4K/60 was causing sparkles, stuttering frames, and occasional hiccups to a black screen at times. I ordered a somewhat pricey, but not too crazy $80 40' fiber optic HDMI cable, and the length was no longer a problem. The picture is absolutely pristine! Of course tosslink is cheap compared to fiber optic HDMI, since it's only a single stand. It's just that the properties of fiber optics are the same. It's an extremely clean method of transfer. That's why it's preferable for telecom companies... Similarly, the official Oculus Link cable for Quest to PC is a fiber optic USB-C cable, for low latency.

Problem is that optical is neccessary for millions of people. It is the audio input for all the high end sets and lots of mid tier headsets. Unneccessay is not term that fits optical out.
