The difference in cost to manufacture them probably won't be all that different. So its more of a question of what kind of losses they are both willing to take.
Can Sony afford loasses? They were in finacial trouble a few years, the PS4 was pretty much saving them. MS could give them away if they wanted.

They took a loss on the PS4 but a $400 PS5 would be a much bigger loss so safe bet that won't happen.

I feel like they are both going to be willing to take similar losses which will put them both at $500. People always think Microsoft is going to do something super crazy with the Xbox because of the money they have.

I agree. While MS can do whatever because of those fat stacks, they are still a businesss...a buisness with shareholders. So, crazy ain't happening.

$500 for both seems pretty much a lock in my book.

I'd wager for the hardcore crowd, price quite honestly isn't going to matter much, unless its priced in uncharted territory. The pricing in my mind is mostly aimed at the casual crowd to lure them in. How much is too much for them?

Regardless, I'm still predicting a complete sell out at any price pint for the first 2 months.

From the previous Twitter post:

The Xbox Series S/Lockhart may be half the price of the Xbox Series X and it will be an important part of Microsoft strategy for the soon to begin new console generation.

Speaking on the Beyond3D forums, eastmen, who has proved in the past to have access to Microsoft insider information, revealed that the Xbox Series S will be half the price of the Series X, come in a small form factor and it will be an all-digital console. The insider doesn't know the final pricing for the Xbox Series X, and thus the Series X, but he had heard that Microsoft was prepared for a $400 Xbox Series X.

Last I heard it be half the price of the XSX and last i heard MS were prepared for a $400 XSX. I am not sure what the final price will be. I think if sony is $500/$600 MS may try to go in at $200/$400/$500 but we will see
Such pricing would be extremely aggressive, but Microsoft would make up for the losses by getting a higher cut of game sales and Game Pass subscriptions.
MS will make up any losses they take by getting a higher cut of game sales and more subscriptions. Pricing also depends on what Sony does. MS doesn't have to go as extreme in pricing if sony prices itself higher.
Eastmen also talked about the July event, where not only the Xbox Series S should be announced, but also the Series X pricing. According to the insider, Microsoft wants the event to be a "night of mic drops", revealing a line-up of games that will make all previous Xbox line-ups pale in comparison.
But from what I"ve heard from all my sources July isn't about sony , July is about the industry and they want it to be a night of mic drops . They are going to come hard with the strategy they have been building up to for years and they want google , amazon , apple , sony and yes Nintendo to shaken up . So expect a series of Mic drop moments followed by the price being the key part of all this.
According to the insider, Microsoft wants to become what Netflix was a few years ago when it comes to streaming and, as such, they are aiming to acquire a lot of quality content for their platform. As such, the Xbox Series S will be a key device in the company's strategy, as it will allow them to reach a market they were never able to hit with its lower price.
That's why I think Lockheart is a key device in their strategy. Its low cost gateway that they can control to make sure the hardware can handle their new compression techniques they will employee with xcloud over the next few years. The plan for Lockheart is to get into price categories they were never able to hit before and I believe based on listening between the lines that they expect lockheart to at some point make it down to fire tv size . Also the size of the first lockheart will surprise everyone.
While eastmen proved to be somewhat reliable in the past, we have to take everything revealed today with a grain of salt. The May Xbox Series X showcase event was definitely disappointing, so there's no doubt that Microsoft will be going all-in for next month's showcase, but keeping expectations in check is the best way to avoid getting disappointed.
The Xbox Series S has yet to be announced, but an announcement shouldn't be too far off, considering the console is referenced in the Windows OS libraries. We will keep you updated on it as soon as more come in on it, so stay tuned for all the latest new

Things are getting nuts!
MS will give this thing a low price to add 3 months of game pass ultimate.

That is over 300 games right off the bat just for buying the console!

They are all third party games...except Ori, and Ori got a sequel. So, that explains that.

By your definition (that 1st party only includes internal studios), Sony only had 2 games that fit the definition of 1st party new IP the first 5 years of this gen. HZD and Knack. Regardless, people just want great games beyond Halo, Gears and Forza. They'll get that. Until this month, I've never heard this strict definition being so important and none of the metrics support that this narrow definition matters to most people.

All I want is Mech Assualt to return

Mech Assault has more potential to become a staple IP than any that aren't currently in circulation. The Battletech universe has a foundation and lore. Could be spun off into a lot of genres including RPG. It's the biggest wasted opportunity in terms of Xbox dormant IP.

Does anyone think the Xbox One will be discontinued? I can't see MS having an Xbox One S, Xbox One SADE, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S for consumers this fall. Brick and mortar stores won't want that.

It seems like with all of the sku's now hard to find, the Cyberpunk Edition sold out, and a 6TF Lockhart at a lower entry price, that it would be also redundant to have them on store shelves. I feel like MS is letting the Xbox One production trickle out.

Yes. I think they'll try get liquidate Xbox One stock before Series launches. That's why they're giving that stuff away right now.

Yeah they just need some games. Rebooting some old franchises can still feel like a new experiences.

They will need some new IPs and certainly Sony had a lot of them this gen but I don't think its necessary for Microsoft to have to match that.

We're on the same page. Just want new high quality experiences. God of War and Spiderman were new experiences on PS5. I feel like Perfect Dark and Fable are being rebooted to the point they're new IP with an existing name.

That isn't my definition of anything. Just stating facts. None of the exclusive games made by third party studios got a sequel.

Ah I get where you're going...and yeah I agree, internal studios are much more likely to build on something. Continue to support a game.

If you want a new IP that has opportunity to get sequels, then why not just reboot a dormant IP? Will be a new experience to most people. The name brings in better mindshare and therefore has a better chance of succeeding. New IPs are really hard to gain mindshare with unless its a multiplayer game.

I'm not expecting Fable to match the classic games in many ways outside of being in a fantasy setting and the world name being Albion.

I don't think Perfect Dark will be anything like either classic. It will probably have a female lead named Joanna in a scifi universe and we might run into an alien named Elvis...and even that last part is questionable.
