My Current Console Is....

Why? My kid isn't getting a Series X. He's got a 32" 720P TV in his room. What's he need a 4K box for? I don't see him ever having a big screen 4K TV in his room while he's living at home. Even college kids...most aren't gaming on good quality 4K TVs or $1000 monitors in their dorms. When the next GTA or big multiplayer game comes out, a 1080P experience will be more than enough. With Series X, you're likely paying $200 more for 4K, better textures and better lighting. It's the enthusiast purchase.

I always remembered kids 7 and 8 years old with $400-$500 consoles. Now that the kids are adults one system is for the adults and the other one is for the kids instead of it all being for kids like it was decades ago. The demographic for consoles went from kids to adults. My father bought me a console. Now fathers buy themselves a console and tell the kids they can't use it.

It's crazy.

I was shocked when I saw my cousin say that he doesn't let his son "touch his system" when he used to hound me to death to let him play my system when he was that age.

“Brand new games built natively for the Xbox Series X such as Halo Infinite. - Microsoft”

Nope it was running on XBO before XSX and has to be gimped on XSX (4k/120 rumors point to this) to continue to be compatible with XBO.

If you buy a budget PC you know there will be some games you can't play for whatever reason. If you get a switch you know there will be a bad port, but you really aren't buying that system because you expect it to play hardcore games. Plus, you have the Nintendo catalog. You are buying an Xbox to essentially play third party games. You definitely don't expect a game to run at 900p/30. 90% of games could run fine on the system, but if it's GTA6 or Witcher 4 that runs like crap, wow. That might be the only game someone buys for a year.

Lol, I think most kids expecting to get a Series X are going to have a terrible Christmas. 80% of parents will walk out of the store with the cheaper model.
Budget PC encompasses a wide range of hardware set ups. But lets go with it, if you buy a top end PC you don't expect performance issues, but you still get them. Hence my point, no platform is impervious to a bad port or poorly optimized game.

Witcher 3 had performance issues, was still one of the best games this gen. Unplayable is a subjective term.

It's a lot different when it's a closed console versus a PC. Especially when it's the Xbox brand.

It can. It isn't the end all be all is my point. Cyberpunk will likely feel more next gen than almost anything else that comes out within the next 2 years despite the Jaguar limitations. Maybe Halo competes but it's in a similar boat. If a game releases in the next 1 to 2 years, it started development life on this gen. Eventually I expect developers to finally evolve things like physics and AI this gen. Well designed implementation of new things takes time though. It takes talent, tools and time. Time being the one thing people are over-looking in this cross-gen for 1 to 2 years strategy.
Nothing is the end all be all.

I don't think anybody is overlooking time. Mainly because it doesn't matter to the actual discussion, but also because I think we all we know that crossgen games will cease to be at somepoint sooner rather than later.

What differences other than graphical ones are you going to see when one was hindered by the other?

I honestly don't get how people think your way. The ram amount differences alone should tell you it wss held back. The fact the FH games utilising the hardware had a gameworld twice the size of the crossgen iteration should tell you FH2 wwas held back.

And on the PC side there is a reason the minimum requirements keep going up. Go try and run Shadow of tge tomb raider on a single core cpu, 1GB ram, and a mid tier GPU from 2015. It wont work.
If I remember correctly, you couldn't even leave the roads on FMH 2 on the 360 version where you could go anywhere and knock down drops and stuff on the Bone version.

Err..yes?. .. I don't know why you post the trailers.

O'Connor told Gamespot that Slipspace was specifically made and optimized for next gen.

In a new, recently-published video (transcribed by Gamespot) Halo franchise director Frank O’Connor said Slipspace was designed for “next-generation” game development and to allow 343 to work more easily.

“We had to create an engine that was more powerful for next-generation development, but also more nimble, so the creatives and engineers are able to work more easily and iterate faster,” he explained. “This technical groundwork is vital to build a platform for the future of Halo.”

A lot of times games are being ported to lower spec platforms. That doesn't mean Slipspace was made to take sole advantage of the lower platform. By that logic we'd be expecting everything from Unreal 5 to be tuned and maxed to 30 frames 1440p PS5 games. By that logic any platform able to to do more would be gimped.

Wolfkill and Ross both said they upset/disappointed their team because they promised they’d allowed them to create a new engine after 4 but nope, but they’re excited to showcase all the new stuff they’ve learned and now capable of. Apparently it’s an entirely new engine, not one bit of source code is share with any previous titles.

No. As I said, no platform is impervious. That is hardly prefferential treatment to one brand/platform over another.

I wasn't saying that you were giving preferential treatment to the Xbox. I was saying that more is expected of console brands versus modular PCs. There is no way the Xbox One could have gotten away with the kind of instability you saw out of RDNA 1 on the PC. Even GCN is much more unstable on the PC than it is on the Xbox One.

I don't care what spin he or anyone wants to spin.
Proof is in the videos above the game in the 2018 and 2019 videos is running on Xbox One/X.

That's the whole point for me. MS is really marketing the console as a legitimate alternative to the PS5. 1080p 60 is just fine on a relatively small tv at couch distance. The problem comes in when you have to skip a bad port because this system is your main console.

Most of the people here arguing that it's just fine wouldn't accept it for themselves.

What official Lockhart marketing have you seen? It’s existence hasn’t even been confirmed yet.

Again, it’s meant to be the cheapest jump into next gen for casuals, which make up a far greater percentage of gamers overall (I’m defining casuals as those who buy a system just to play a few of the big games).

If you want all the bells and whistles, pay the extra and get an X.

The way I understand it both consoles will be marketed together as a series. Just like the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X only at the beginning of the console lifespan.

I wouldn't necessarily consider someone who bought and Xbox One just to play Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2, and Red Dead Redemption 2 a casual. Those games are easily 100 hour games. They don't sink a lot of time into gaming, but that's not the same as somebody who bought a Nintendo Switch to play Animal Crossing or a Mario game.

Who has a double standard?

This is just a general PA:

Someone who works on a game saying that it is being built for the ground up obviously has intimate knowledge of that game. This person is hence not believed.

Yet. Someone working on another game on another console says anything similar...and they are believed.

Its really simple.

If I'm not involved in creating a game and I'm told by a developer/lead designer of said game that it will be a certain way I will believe it. Why? Because they are working on it and I'm not, and UNTIL I have it in my hands and am playing it that is all I have to go on.

Of course.....this is how I think.

That is all I'm saying.
