Has there been any info about when stores will start taking pre-orders?

None yet, hopefully at the event, but even then it may not happen if they don’t announce the price.

I have a feeling if they don’t they wait to announce the price and release date late August after Sony’s next event, maybe at GamesCon online event.

So basically the MS studios will make one cross gen game each then turn to next gen only for future games. Sony normally wait for the install base to grow before releasing heavy hitters so I expect the first games on both consoles to be roughly on par for the first couple of years regardless.

Some perspective on cross gen development.

What publisher was considered the best single player publisher this gen? Most people would say Sony, right? Their games were highly rated for their graphics, animations, art, detail, refined gameplay and story telling. Not new game design. There was no evolution of physics, AI, environmental interactions, game or level design. Most everything they did could've been done on the PS3...but much uglier. Bloodbourne, regarded by many as their best exclusive, has similar game design, combat, NPC numbers, level size, etc as Dark Souls 1. God of War is super pretty but the AI is basic, the environmental interaction wasn't new and the number of NPCs on screen didn't set a new bar. HZD is super pretty...but it's physics are basic, AI is worse than Halo CE, and there is less environmental interactivity than Zelda BOTW. Speaking of Zelda BOTW...it's rated better than any exclusive on Xbox One X and has a WiiU version. WiiU! The first great next gen only exclusives this gen was Witcher 3. Wither 3 got a Switch port.

Nobody is promising that the Xbox One versions of these games will feel close to the next gen versions. Only that the Xbox One is getting a version. With diminishing returns and the slowing of Moore's Law, the versions the Xbox One gets will likely be competent. Small devs are less likely to have cross gen versions because they don't have the resources. They often have to choose. They aren't being mandated. Microsoft does have the resources. They can hire infinite contractors to create Xbox One versions of games. They will as they're trying to build mindshare and sell Game Pass subscriptions which will lead to more investment. Great games start with big investment commitments. They'll do that for 1 to 2 years. In the meantime, Halo may be the most next gen feeling exclusive in year 1. This cross gen s*** is so overblown.

bit hypocritical. I guess it is consumer friendly and against what gaming is abut while it suits their business needs, but in 2 years when there platform can sustain Gamepass they just gunna be like, f*** it! Don't care about that now, and start giving generational exclusives again.

Yep. That's not hypocritical though. It'll be a business move just like this one is. It's consistently about growing the business. They're just getting better at messaging is all. As consumers, should always focus more on the impact than the spin.

Regardless of their motivation, it's good to give the community time to cross over. There will be less than 5% of their base that will be able to cross over this year or early next. I like knowing that I can play with my friends until they have a chance to move over unlike this gen.

Sounds hypocritical to me.

It's just business. When it no longer makes business sense (in a year or 2), they'll stop. On the flip side, Sony's spin is bulls*** too. "We believe in generational cut offs so we don't hold next gen back"....meanwhile Demon Souls is a remake of a of PS3 game, GT looks like a better looking and sounding current gen version of GT and Spiderman is a 2 year project meaning it's largely the same game engine. They're trying to force consumers to jump on their next gen hardware meanwhile Microsoft is trying to force consumers towards Game Pass regardless of where they are. Neither is a charitable approach. Both are trying to create the best games possible with massive investment to succeed at their business strategies.

It may contain a shade of hypocrisy depending how you look at it, but really only pertaining to gaming on a console in front of a TV.

As a platform, they can continue to maintain this stance, with PC and the advent of xCloud, essentially giving gamers opportunities to game across a suite of multiple devices regardless of next gen development. Ultimately, that is what he is trying to convey. They are trying to give gamers choices instead of locking them into specific hardware. It’s interesting that MS and Sony are so different in how they see gaming. MS is definitely much more about social connectedness and gaming with others, and this definitely carries over into their offerings. They seem to be taking baby steps toward offering more singular story-driven type of experiences.

Ofcourse it is just business.

But if you're siting there telling people you're consumer friendly because you're doing this thing, but then stop doing that thing in the near future, it is hypocritical. Infact, I'd say that is the very definition of hypocritical. Why you're saying it is irrelevant.

Essentially, what we are pointing out is businesses are full of s***.

It's friendly when you can move without losing anything. Starting from scratch and bring nothing after spending is bulls#it.

They're being consumer friendly by continuing to support the Xbox One and Xbox One X with 1st Party games for an extra year or 2.
That is being consumer friendly.
If they eventually stop it is not because they want to be anti consumer, it is because the economics behind supporting the older platforms just doesn't make it worth it anymore. In the end it is a business.

Cheers, Cause my comment didn't start with, "ofcouse it's business."

Look at what you just said. It is consumer friendly until it doesn't work in their favour anymore. Which means it wasn't done for consumer friendly reasons in the first place. But they want it to look like they did it to be consumer friendly.

You're pointing out the motive to do something customer friendly isn't based on Xbox being a charitable group of people willing to look out for people at their own expense. Well no s***! Lol

Motive doesn't matter. This helps the majority of Xbox owners. I'll own Series X day 1 if I can get it. Most Xbox gamers won't. This strategy works out in their favor. It's consumer friendly to them. Nobody should make the case that any consumer friendly strategy from a mega corporation isn't rooted in pure business. Neither Sony nor Microsoft love you more. I get it. Its a business move. It can be a business move and still be customer friendly to most customers.

Free country. You're allowed to let their motives matter. Me personally, I'm not disillusioned enough to believe any mega corporation really gives a s*** about me personally. Leadership has their jobs to generate profit. If they can find situations that help them profit that are wins for me (Game Pass), that's great. I'll buy it. When they can't thread that needle, I'll complain about it. In this case, I believe Phil's executive money making decision benefits me because supporting multiple platforms is how he's able to get more money to invest in content that goes into Game Pass. Second, I like keeping my friends together from one gen to the next.
