There actually was a codename that hasn't been figured out yet, Project Edinburgh.

I was kinda waiting for some kind of confirmation before starting an Xbox VR thread, but I'm also glad someone else did. Let's roll with it because it's just enevidible at this point, IMO. I've already made a little list...

Xbox Studios current or previously released VR games:

Double Fine:
• Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin
343 Industries:
• Halo Recruit
Ninja Theory:
• Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice VR Edition
• Star Wars: Vader Immortal – Ep. 1-3
Mojang:
• Minecraft VR
InXile:
• The Mage's Tale
• Frostpoint
Compulsion Games:
• We Happy Few: Uncle Jack Live VR
Bethesda:
• The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
• DOOM VFR
• Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot
• Fallout 4 VR
Asobo Studio: (not Microsoft owned, but making1st party VR)
• Flight Simulator

I'm not 100% sure if there's any more, but that's what I gathered. It's a pretty good list they've got so far. They also have Forza, which would be an EASY port for either studio. I'd like to shout out to Sea of Thieves being a shoo-in, although people seem to think that the waves would make you sick. I'd take that chance!

Can think of a fair few Kinect games that would work in VR.

Which ones? I think that one day we could see a revival of some of these games, just like we are seeing Space Channel 5 remade for VR now. Kinect Sports being the obvious ones.

I feel like a broken record, but Kinect was both ahead of its time and too soon, simultaneously. It kind of reminds me of how Microsoft went all in on Pocket PCs, and just missing the greater picture, with touch screen and virtual keyboard being mandatory. The device was absolutely revolutionary, and yet it lacked the basics of a controller. It seriously wasn't just the input, but the fact that it wasn't synced up to a display in a standard, unified way made it never quite actually 1:1 gameplay. Gaming on a 3D projector, I always wanted them to have me calibrate the Kinect for screen size and position, for a precise 1:1 3D mapped virtual area. This would have been as close to VR/AR as possible back then, and they definately had the technology to do it.

Here we are now, with Quest 2, and amazing 6DOF VR and good hand tracking; and yet full body tracking is only available for those who are reviving technology that's over a decade old. Meanwhile, Microsoft is still shy of this space. I seriously wish that Phil Spencer would have that AHA moment, when he realizes that VR is mature enough to be viable, and the only thing that's missing is Microsoft pushing it forward in the consumer space.

Good list. Now that I've tried to imagine some of these in VR, I think that actually most would actually be improved!

These are my standouts for VR adaptation:
  • Kinect Sports games
  • Fantasia:ME (I'm so sad about actually missing that one before getting rid of my VCR Xbox One)
  • Disneyland Adventure
  • Child of Eden
  • Haunt
  • Steel Battalion (the controls would just work better)
I never played Kinectimals, but I think I've got the idea from that E3 presentation, and it's almost like "of course this would be better". The Gunstringer, I think that one could be pulled off just because of how different it is. I had to imagine that one first, but why not?

Another interesting take, is that within the current crop of hardware, Quest (and v2) is currently the only VR platform with hand tracking. That makes it a pretty solid choice for a headset with this kind of thing in mind. You couldn't pull off all of Kinect Sports, but you could get away with most games on Quest, IMO. If they could release a cheap throwback Kinect v2 clone for these games, that might work too... but they won't anytime soon. I'd rather them just get into VR easily, and without risk. That's why I personally think they should work with Oculus. If PSVR2 blows Quest 2 away, hey Oculus will probably have a Quest 3 before the consoles are at their halfway point! In short, I think they should let someone else deal with the hardware, and partner with them.

Some new Microsoft VR controller patents recently were granted. I'm kinda digging the way that the tracking loop is at an angle on this design. Not sure how that balances though.

Interesting that the author didn't recognize the standard half/half controller design patent was alteready an actual product for the Cyberpunk Xbox One controller, so that's why no share button. That's also a good sign that at least that patent was actually used.

Also, that VR controller looks pretty finalized, and not like a loose concept. Interesting to note that the name of the VR controller patent is simply "Game Controller". Lots of references to Oculus in the patent, too. I have the patent PDF, which I will drop a link to here soon. Patent was filed May 31, 2019, and was granted 11 days ago.

Let's see if the Attachment works.

Nope, sorry 😐
Here's a better link to a slightly different patent. You can click on the PDF there for images, and the full design patent. Interestingly, it's all shots of the left controller. I can tell by the fact that what is the bumper button on a standard controller always moves to the inner side of the handle.

These patents may be nothing of course. However, you do have to read between the lines. First of all, the patent title is "Game Controller". That's a bit more aggressive than Windows Mixed Reality Controlling Device or something dry and Windows-y. This is a sure sign that they are on the path to a true CONSUMER product, unlike most WMR. They actually started to break into consumer market with the recent HP Reverb G2, but those controllers are much more underdeveloped, and understated. More like an improvement on the old WMR versions, and not like a totally new model.

I've looked over tons of patents in the AR/VR field over the last 5-7 years (for both hobby and investment purposes), and the one thing that I think rings truest for me, is to find the intent and infer the direction a company is headed... I think Microsoft is going consumer in both VR and AR soon. Like within a couple years. I'm not sure how soon they will announce these things, but they are coming.

Would have been in the works for a while
Yeah and for PC and maybe PS4VR (maybe Oculus Quest). MS does need to get into this game though...I'd be super surprised if they didn't already have something in the works with Oculus Quest either for single wire or full wireless play. Would be short-sighted methinks....but then this is the MS that just tried to double the price of Xbox Live so I guess anything goes.

If they go the wireless route would it be best if they use their proprietary WiFi tech that they use for their controllers?

🤔

Weird that I just happened to see an old Tweet from Carmack like this one below, that was from Sept... I mean, it's probably not related to this, right? Right? I mean, the dude is knee deep in FB/Oculus, but...
