But when it comes.. it will be wireless

Microsoft won’t have any form of virtual reality for the Xbox One or Xbox Scorpio at E3 this year as the company continues its focus on VR for computers, officials tell Polygon.

And when VR does arrive on an Xbox console, potentially still next year, it sounds like it will be wireless.

“Our primary focus is making our mixed reality experiences a success on Windows 10 PCs,” Alex Kipman, technical fellow at Microsoft, told Polygon today. “We believe that right now a Windows PC is the best platform for mixed reality as its open ecosystem and enormous installed base offer the best opportunity for developers, and Windows offers the most choices for consumers.

“Windows has been the birthplace of a variety of technologies, and we believe this will hold for mixed reality too. Given the efforts we have underway on Windows for mixed reality, and our belief that console VR should be wireless, right now we are focused on developing mixed reality experiences for the PC, not on the console.”

Phil Spencer said months ago that they were using the PC platform to test out VR/MR and that it wasn't a focus for their console space for the immediate future. Not sure why people are surprised by this.

Best news foe E3 so far. Didn't want any of those Kinect/VR/motion gimmicks.

Yeah agreed but there's confusion about that now. Apparently Alex Kipman during Build said we can look forward to MR at E3 and the head of Xbox China said we will be blown away by MR at E3.

MR is VR and AR isn't it?

Well damn...if it coming and takes up all 90 minutes, I am blocking Phil Spencer from my Twitter.

Wireless headsets are the way to go in my opinion. I can wait.

Nah, this is better obviously

So no Star Wars VR dancing (lack of) rhythm game? Scorpio is dead to me.

After playing the Star Wars Battlefront VR experience, It will be a huge shame for MS to miss out on this, imo. I don't care about wires. They can release a wireless upgrade later. Gimme functionality now! Don't need to walk around the room to enjoy Forza, Flight sims, or Resident Evil 7.

No big deal. We already know it's going to be a lot of Scorpio talk. People don't like having hardware shoved down their throats, they want to see the games. I'm sure Oculus on Scorpio will be amazing, whenever it happens.

I think they should at least say something in mention. They could just show a quick concept to let ppl know that it's on the agenda and that they are taking it seriously.

It's a fad that will die anyway.

I do not agree with this. It's the next logical frontier for gaming, imo. I do think it's way in its infancy, though. I also think that mixing in AR and a passive display is the key to its future.

People said Move and Kinect and Wiimote and Sixaxis and 3D and Touchbar were not fads but those are dead.

Those are all not VR. They may all contain a single component of the full package, but none are truly immersive enough to put you in the middle of the experience. Once you feel like you are at the center of a game in VR, it's like "oh, this is what we've been reaching for this whole time". At least, that's how I feel.

IMO, the next hurdle will be to make it immersive enough, but not completely cut you out of reality. That's exactly why I think Microsoft is on the right path with MR.

With regards to it being a fad, well videogames themselves were definitely seen as a fad, at one time. You could argue that it has only been taken seriously enough in incremental doses throughout its course. Nintendo and Sega were not really taken as seriously as people seem to remember. Honestly, Sony PlayStation, then eventually Xbox were more milestones. They were just seen as a toy, back in the day. Before Best Buy came around, a good deal of people were buying consoles and games at Toys'R'us. It was definitely not "cool" for an adult to play videogames as a hobby.

Also, you mentioned 3D. It may be a fad that comes and goes, but it has been around a hell off a lot longer than videogames. It had waves in the 50s, 60s, 70s (drive-in w/the crappy Red/Cyan) and 80s. All of those decades except the 70s theatrical and 80s TV mainly used the polarized method, not completely unlike RealD uses now, and most were in color. Those are the facts, and our media completely lied about it. It was also a pretty big lie that 2000s 3D was much different. On my 2012 projector technology, I've watching several 3D movies from the 1950s and 1960s and none of them were originally shown with the colored glasses, like the myth goes. Those old movies also are playable in VR, which is awesome.... yet some people STILL don't take it seriously... even when there are still plenty of movies coming out all the time in theaters and Blu-ray. It's perhaps bigger than ever. (Excluding the TV-hype)

I don't know, why does something people enjoy have to be for everyone to not be seen as a fad? Why not just some people enjoy the sh!t out of it, and that's ok?

What I was getting at earlier is that VR is greater than the sum of its parts, even if we've all been introduced to those parts before. Sure, we've seen small screens, 3D, motion control, motion tracking, etc. Those are all just tools for a new paradigm. A lot of those tools are many, many times more useful within that paradigm.

Why do we crave more and more realistic games? Why did we create cinemas with giant screens? (Cinerama?, Imax?, Why?) Why did we humans invent the Stereoscope in the 1800s? I believe it's GOT to be in our DNA to want to transport ourselves to these creative worlds! Why on earth would we simply stop at the television, a creation of the 1950s? It's simply not logical. As long as technology keeps progressing, will we just give up?

Nah, we've been working toward this moment for a long time now. It's finally within our grasp!

I have no issue with people enjoying fads so long as it doesn't take away from time, development, money, available performance resources and timeliness of our core games.

MS not doing VR at E3: They are totally ignoring this new tech! This is the future!
If MS was doing VR at E3: They are ignoring games! What a gimmick!

So, for those who think we were going over the hump of this VR "craze", let me please inform you that you are have no clue what is actually gong on.

In case you missed it, Apple just had their WWDC show a couple of days ago. They just revealed that they are all in on AR+VR. They didn't reveal a headset, but they did a VR demo with ILM and SW, and they announced a series of computers that are VR-ready, etc. They also announced a new AR developer platform.

You might have also missed the Google trade show about a month ago. They announced a new stand alone Daydream VR platform and some amazing software that scales down accurate-looking, realistic room scale VR to mobile VR. They also used Star Wars, which is quickly becoming the whore of VR.

Yeah, you guys who think VR/AR is going to go away anytime soon are in for a disappointment. There is so much technology invested with these companies who are competing with each other and want to take over the market first. They will not abandon ship any time soon and give it up to the competitor right now. No way! It's clearly just getting started.

I think E3 is going to show that MS is ignoring both.

Not really. Every piece I have read, when asked, they've stated they like tech, that it has potential, but PC is the right platform to test and curate its content right now.
