I have no interest in Game Pass or Xcloud, but this is awesome news for those that do!So with this you can play games on your phone and tablets?
We’ve been planning on getting a tablet for the family that would be cool to play this on it.

Cutting live as a stand alone sub is a bad idea. Also, goes against their whole "options" spiel.

Maybe, but itt didn't sound that way. Sounds more like they want tthe pay wall to force GP subs. Which isn't good.My gut is that the paywall for multiplayer is going away sooner than later. Gold will eventually be gone and the paywall with it. I think they're trying to thread that needle to move Gold members to Game Pass during the transition because it's still a lot of guaranteed money to flush down the toilet. Ultimate will be the way they unify console, PC and streaming platforms to one service that provides equal value regardless of where you play.
Personally I think they should announce the end of the paywall next month before pre-orders go up. May sway some gamers.
I am old school.

Then it is more likely they woould just remove the barrier for F2P.You could be right. I could be wrong. I've had the feeling for awhile that the multiplayer paywall was in their way for their long term plans. Xcloud and Game Pass are their future. Gold is dinosaur. While it makes them a lot of money, I believe it also hinders their engagement. I suspected when they were allowing people to use the life hack to upgrade years of Gold to Game Pass Ultimate for $1, they did it to lock in these Gold gamers and collect that money up front. Maybe they have enough conversions that they can bite the bullet and take the loss on the rest.
Nadella's philosophy is really all about that engagement. The multiplayer paywall reduces engagement. As more and more multiplayer gamers are playing free to play games (which are free on Sony's platform), as PC gaming continues to grow faster than console gaming, and with streaming around the corner, there's less and less reason for people to stay with Gold....for that matter, buy an Xbox which charges for online gaming. Instead of trying to milk the cow until it's dead, might be best to take the hit now and gain positive mindshare from it prior to a new gen of consoles. As it stands, the Fortnite, Apex, and Warzone players may pick Playstation for the simple fact they don't have to pay to play those games online there.
Unless something changes its only for Android for now.
