Yakuza Series

Some great moments in the middle of a lot of meh in the originals. Remakes improved those.

3 probably the weakest

This is the prequel to the Yakuza series, a Japanese brawler. I've never played a Yakuza game myself, but I've heard good things, and I've also heard this is a good one to start with. It's exclusive to PS4. Coming Jan. 24th.

  • A Hard Boiled Crime Drama: The story follows Kazuma Kiryu as a junior yakuza member who finds himself in a world of trouble when a simple debt collection goes wrong and his mark winds up murdered.
  • Fight Like Hell: Kiryu and Majima can each switch between three brutal hand-to-hand combat styles on the fly to create the most fluid beatdowns ever experienced in a Yakuza game.
  • Kiryu and Majima will find themselves interacting with many of the colorful denizens of Tokyo and Osaka in some of the most absurdly comedic and heartwarming tales from the red light district.
Gameplay (in Japanese):

"... Secondly, and this is sometimes controversial, but hear me out — we’re maintaining general-use honorifics in the English script. We’re leaving the original Japanese voices intact for the authenticity that only a Japanese voice actor could bring to a yakuza experience, so we took the opportunity to bring the subtitles you’re reading closer to what you’re actually hearing the characters say. Beyond just marrying the subtitles to the spoken word, the honorifics actually play a pretty important role in understanding the respect (or lack thereof) characters have for each other. I think you’ll really see how much more this adds to the story when you get to play it!"

I know I've said this before, but I love the depth that Japanese game developer/publishers go to to show off every feature of their game.

What was that, like a 7 minute preview? Lol

Yeah, that gives you a good feel. I just wish I knew what he was saying, ha. I thought it showed some interesting brutality, plus some of the questionable Japanese stuff you know and love (starting around 2:30). I like that it takes place during the decadent 80s, and in Japan. It's not all serious and grim; it has some silly stuff in there, too, which is good. Looks like it could be interesting.

I've never played a Yakuza game. Anyone else played one? Impressions?

I heard that the last one (Yakuza 5, I think) is hard to get into, if you're new to the series, because there is so much background they take for granted. This one will be better in that way. It's a prequel to everything, so it'll start from scratch. It'll be a good entry point for new players.

lol Rosetta Stone ads on this page. Not sure if because of Japanese game or because I just bought a subscription to the site... for Japanese. So in that case and like a lot of other games I use the original language where it makes sense. I've only done the intro portion so as long as they are talking about a boy, girl, man, or woman eating, drinking, cooking, or running alone or together, I'll know what they are saying. Also what a f***ing mess of a sentence.

I lived in Japan for a couple years, minored in Japanese in school, had a job where I did nothing but speak Japanese all day long, and I still rarely have any idea what the characters are saying in Japanese games!

That's cool. I'm looking at going there on vacation in a few years (maybe during Olympics) and figured I'd try to learn at least a little bit before I go. Never used Rosetta Stone so not sure how well it will work.

Got really good reviews so will be interesting to see how it sells outside Japan this time around.

Anyone pick this up yet? I've almost pulled the trigger several times, the only thing that's held me back is my backlog and addiction to the games I'm presently playing. Definitely want to play this though, so Japanesey.

Do you still get 'random' fights while walking around?
Yeah, it reminds me off those random rpg battles. Don't know how I feel about it yet. As to your other post about western sales. Iirc Sega has said to the effect, if the next games to be localised don't sell well enough, Yakuza might be done for western audiences. When I see this type of thing, if it interests me, I make an effort to purchase, sometimes.

Well it's not sold well but apparently it's also had some stock issues but it went from 8th in the UK charts to completely gone.

Series has never taken off outside Japan and I honestly don't ever see that happening.

It was sold out at Amazon for about two days. The thing is we don't know what Sega's meter for success is. Surely it wouldn't be in the high millions, I'm guessing obviously but last I knew, they said they had millions of fans in Japan and about 200-300k outside Japan. The director made it a point to say those fans are actually important to them. If they can sell 350-400k, maybe that'll be good enough?

Koei/Tecmo didn't sell a ton of Toukiden Kiwami but it sold to their expectations, and Toukiden 2 is coming west. I'll be getting that one as I liked the first and all localized Yakuza games.

Sega would take 200k outside Japan cause the series has been a big flop outside of it.

I'm hoping you're correct, this way we'll continue to get more Yakuza games. Thing is, Yakuza isn't GTA. I guess that's what many thought about the series when it first came out. You know, Yakuza is a Japanese rip off of GTA. Yakuza is brilliantly Japanese just as Toukiden is, even with subtitles.

They will keep making them but I see this being the last one they release outside Japan.

Its hard to jump to the conclusion the series is done if they have sold more than expectations. Selling out certainly suggests it did.

Edit: Yakuza 5 didn't even get a retail release and 4 opened at #26. That is a big jump.

They hardly printed any copies hence still selling out
