PS4 Pro Discussion

I wouldn't buy a 4k set without HDR. Better to wait for prices to come down, imo.

A huge percentage of of sets that have HDR at this point have horrible implementation of it that shouldn't be used, or will be outdated in a year or two. If you're going to wait, wait for a set that hasn't been released yet.

Easy. GET BOTH, b****.

If you're wanting to stay cheapish, the Sony X800D is highly recommended. I believe 3 or 4 of us here have it. It's small, but great for gaming.

Yep that's the one I have and the price has come down a little more, they are $799 at bestbuy now.

Not sure if i should get a Pro after that Scorpio spec reveal. The green kool-aid is getting to me.

If you are someone who likes Sony exclusives and has a 4K set the Pro is worth the purchase for sure, if you want the most power go with Scorpio. If you can afford both and are interested in both I'd say get them both, Horizon looks awesome on the standard PS4 but on the Pro it really stands out, Battlefield 1 is another game that looks quite a bit better on the Pro than the standard model. If you are interested in upcoming games like God of war, Days Gone, Spider-man, the UC4 expansion and TLOU2 I'd get a pro for sure, since most of those games won't be out until fall or early next year you could probably wait for the Pro to get a price drop if you aren't in a big rush to have one now.

There will be a lot of good 3rd party games this fall, RDR2, Battlefront 2, Destiny 2, COD set in WW2 again I believe so if all you care about is the best looking version of games you may want to get a scorpio first, I don't care for any of MS's announced exclusives but it'll undoubtedly have the best looking versions of these games, they'll still look amazing on the Pro but I'm sure the scorpio versions will have a technical edge as well as probably some higher res assets. The good thing with these two choices is you really can't lose, neither one is stuck to a low res, neither one is going to have bad performance etc, you'll just be going from great (pro) to greater (scorpio) lol

That's why I went with a more mid level set, I didn't want to break the bank on a tv while HDR standards still haven't been properly sorted out.

I think a regular ps4 and scorpio is the best combo now if you haven't upgrade to pro.

Don't see why, if you have a 4K tv you want to get the most out of it and the only real reason to upgrade to either console is higher res and better graphics, neither one is really going to have anything you can't play on the older consoles, they'll both be playing the same games as the base models. To me it just seems that if you want upgraded graphics that means go for both if you are considering owning both a playstation and Xbox.

I'm just saying if you only have OG ps4 and you're looking for another console. Scorpio could be a nice choice and a massive upgrade to the regular ps4.

If the work GG put into Horizon ZD on the Pro is any indication of what benefits other Sony exclusives will get it makes it worth getting the Pro just for them IMO. I get where you are coming from though, if someone already has a PS4 it's not like they can't play those upcoming games they just won't be able to play the best versions of them, same thing if someone has an X1 and goes for a Pro instead of a Scorpio, at the end of the day both of these consoles are really mostly about delivering prettier versions of the same games you can already play on hardware that's been out for years. I'll be getting a scorpio as long as it's not too expensive, I can't justify spending over $399 for a console that won't offer any new games/experiences I can already play. I wouldn't blame them for it being more than that though they are packing a lot into that box so it just depends if they are willing to sell at a loss or not.

Pretty much comes down to if you want all the best versions of multiplatforms or exclusives in that case.

Indeed. If one were to look at what Turn 10 (probably one of the best devs on console) has done to Forza Horizon 3 in 4K HDR (as well a Apex) and Coalition's 4K Gears 4, they are mind boggling. Microsoft's solid line up of exclusives would need push me to add the Xbox to my console collection if I already owned a PS4 Original. Both the Pro and the Scorpio will be offering amazing exclusive experiences, so really if they can afford both, yeah.

ignore him

Waits to see if this type of talk will be ok in the Scorpio threads when it releases..

I'm staying away from those threads from now on, if you don't praise it to the heavens you are called a hater or people question your motives and act as if you are downplaying it while they act like it's going to be the 2nd coming of Christ lol. It will be a great console with a ton of potential I have no doubt about that, my only doubts are that MS has the vision/talent in their studios to really push the art and tech in a way that shows off what the console can do, they haven't really done it with their other machines, the best looking games on the 360 were 3rd party so this isn't anything new. That's one thing I have to give to Sony, they really let their teams have the time to create the tech they need to realize their vision, with the exception of the MLB team they don't require a new game every other year like MS seems to with their biggest franchises, there are times where there is a 3-5 year gap between releases from some of Sony's studios.

I disagree that the best looking games on 360 were third party. On Xbox One I would agree.

I may give you Forza simply because it is the best looking series they put out on a photorealistic type of level but Halo was always average looking on the 360 and Fable ran like crap (especially the last one) and didn't have a graphical style that really pushed anything technically. Gears was made by Epic so while it was a very good looking series it wasn't made by MS internal studios.

I thought Halo 3 was nice looking. Also discounting first party games because they're developed by a third party is kind of strange.

Kameo looked great. As did Crackdown at the time.

But I'm sure you'll disagree. So we can agree to disagree.

I thought CoD 2 smoke effects were amazing on the 360. Perfect Dark Zero also looked amazing. Speaking of which, this is a game we need a new one of. What are you waiting for MS?

It's not strange at all, Epic developed Gears and they also made the engine it ran on, MS published it but Epic isn't one of their studios, my point was that MS owned studios don't seem to push the hardware not that the hardware wasn't capable of some nice things. Kameo did look very nice, that was a marriage of art and technology that I don't think Rare has found again unfortunately. Crackdown was fine, nothing special IMO but I did enjoy the first game quite a bit. I generally don't find cell shaded games all that impressive unless they add something that pops like animation that really makes it look smooth and like a real cartoon, the cell shading in CD was pretty basic but that's fine, it served it's purpose. Also Crackdown wasn't made by an MS owned studio either, Realtime Worlds was an independent studio.

Yeah I remember the first time I saw the smoke in COD2 on a demo kiosk before the console launched, I couldn't believe how good it looked at the time lol.

i see your point that Microsoft doesn't have the studio count that Sony has. This isn't anything new.

I don't agree with Microsoft's strategy of buying second party games as exclusives instead of building up studios. But it what they do. Sony has had a few instances of second party studios making exclusive games.as well. I don't discount them.
