I think gamers who moaned about there being no games on Scorpio should prepare themselves. Sounds like there's going to be a few surprises at E3. I personally want to see if the narrative changes. As I said before it was the haters that built the Scorpio. Now its the most powerful hardware in the console space. All this uproar over games will garner the same results with software. Just remember; you asked for it.

The last time Microsoft got hammered like this about lack of exclusives while trailing badly with their back up against the wall...they bought Rare, started Turn 10 and formed an alliance with Epic for Gears. The momentum from that turned out to be a great start for the 360. That kept going until Kinect and Mattrick took over in 2009.

I don't give an ish about who wins these console wars outside of both Sony and MS staying alive, being healthy and competitive. As long as MS isn't forced out, I like when they are being challenged and called out. They're a lot more interesting this way. Something big will happen on the games front. Due to the recent cancellations I wonder if MS is going to keep a lot of what they've greenlighted hush...but MS isn't investing in Scorpio without a plan to support it with their own games.

Agreed.

It's not about console war crap - it's really about realizing where MS is currently, and how they've responded to such claims in the past. They've always responded in BIG WAYS. It'll be no different here. I can guarantee you the narrative will change from console exclusives to something else entirely -- even though MS has had great exclusives. Gonna be a interesting E3 and following 2017.

My biggest concern is the 3rd party development will not try to make a difference in games. This is why 3rd party need to show so gamers can call out their bulls*** with 3rd party games.
they always will make the most of the hardware, the games will be made to scale and I'd be surprised if many recent games are not already scale-able.

Critique is as follows

"MS has X but they don't own the IP, it could go multi!"
"MS owns the X IP but they don't own the studio, they could go multi!"
(When MS has X and own the studio) "That IP is dead/That studio is unproven"
When IP and Studio thrive "Why dont you make a new IP"
When new IP is a genre in an old/unused IP "Why is this not a Battletoads/PerfectDark/Mechassault game?"

"So Matt Lee, from the Direct3D team on Xbox, he shows up with a cardboard box full of parts," recalls Tector. "It's like, a loose motherboard, the debugging adapters, the drives. And he sets it up on the desk. And it's just like, there's no proper cooling on it, so we just have a fan sitting there. And it's blowing across it, and it vibrates, and the fan starts moving and the whole thing shuts down because the memory overheats and...it was comedy. So we taped the fan to the desk and we kept going and within 2 days, we were already running at 4K [resolution] 60 [frames per second]."

Hoping there's lots of P;ay Anywhere games on Scorpio.

I don't play on PC anymore (I wouldn't call dabbling with Flash games once a month counting), but at some point I'll need a new one as my laptop (6 yrs old) will eventually crash and burn.

While I don't care about playing AAA games on PC (my next computer will just be a better laptop), if there's any lower key strategic games that cross platforms (like a Civ Revolutions game), I'm in.

I'm waiting for the one day that MS pulls off their version of Switch...where for a premium they give gamers the option of a plug and play Xbox that detaches from the TV and it becomes a gaming laptop.

If I was in charge I try to release the Scorpio the same day as Destiny. Steal the marketing right away from Sony.

That would be a little difficult wouldn't it? With Scorpio having no hardware showcases and exposure for games like RDR2, Destiny etc due to marketing exclusivity, how do they steal away marketing? I mean it might work for launch day, but long term...............

Ii don't think anyone is confused about which console will showcase the best versions of the games, that alone is a certain deal of marketing power. Will it win the war? Nope.

This is a flaw in Phil Spencer's strategy, perhaps his only misstep since taking on the reigns as head of Xbox. You cannot underestimate the power of marketing deals.

Agree there is marketing power right there. As for the console wars, this ended with the death of console generations. Its an Eco-system war from now on.

Let's hope the design of the case doesn't include any glossy surfaces.

Because if you try to wipe it you'll just get a bunch of scratches :meh:

Well when Microsoft did do those deals, they were viewed negatively by some.

Please send audio next time this happens.
I wasn't born yesterday.

I check the bags of everyone that enters and exists my house, just in case any evidence gets out. ;P

*And upon reflection, some of the things that we say in the moment can seem harsh, but hey, it's only natural to assume if someone accidentally turns your teevo off as they clean behind the tv, and the View doesn't record, obviously their mother was a crack whore who [edit]

In the past, marketing deals did little to benefit the gamer...unless you consider having the opportunity to pay to split the user base earlier in multiplayer games to be a benefit.

If rumors are true and publishers are pushed to ensure the best looking and performing versions of their games align with marketing deals, then this all changes. If I'm leading a bottom line publisher like Activision, it's exactly what I do. I think the assumption is some of these multiplats won't run best on Scorpio. Others will. Future Scorpio owners need to embrace that and if you always want the best version of multiplats, you'll need to own multiple consoles.

If this is true and I hope its not then Phil better open up his checkbook.

And its not the marketing deals that people have a problem with. Its the exclusive content deals.

MS started this dumb game and Sony stole their weapon, added mods to it and are using it against MS. Can't really get mad at anyone (well...except maybe Don Mattrick). It's business. There are billions on the line. In other businesses, practices are even more cut throat and anti-consumer.

Xbox is going to have to dig their way out of this with exclusives. Scorpio needs it's version of Horizon to show why people need Xbox consoles because the competition isn't going to allow them any other way. I'm coming to the belief that Crackdown is the most important part of the Scorpio launch. It needs to create the sort of buzz Halo and Gears used to get. Then maybe next year MS wins back some marketing deals.

Again.....Xbox does not need a ' Horizon ' to be competitive. It needs a raft of 1st party reveals and 3rd party DLC deals.

I believe they will deliver this with an e3 info bomb on 11/06 and even after that we will have people say " they need a Horizon ".....

Exclusive marketing in the gaming space started well before the Xbox was invented.

Exclusive content that came with those deals didn't become impactful until COD. The Xbox 360/COD deal last gen I think started this snowball that's been taken to the next level this gen...where Destiny can't even be shown running on a Xbox and exclusive content is a year or more.

Those same people (MS haters mostly) were hammering MS for ruining the game with their exclusivity are the ones hammering them for lack of games and applauding Sony and their dominance of exclusivity.

I agree with TheGeneral about Phils flaw regarding marketing deals and exclusivity. I hope he sees how vital that is and how wrong he is and reverts back to the old days. F the disingenuous people. MS needs to cut this good guy persona because they're hated either way.

Curious as to why you think MS started it? I remember tomb raider getting that kinda treatment on PS1. Probably even before that.

I could be wrong. It's happened before. I just didn't remember marketing deals being tied to other stuff until last gen. Either way....I feel their impact has continued to escalate.

SONY was the first console company to pay for exclusives that I could remember. Since the original PlayStation they paid for games not to release on SEGA or Nintendo consoles for a while.

To really get back in the game, Microsoft needs to:
  • Ensure Scorpio is demonstratively better than PS4 Pro for 3rd party titles from past/future (...and what I mean is that the differences are tangible to the consumer)
  • Make sure Xbox One games look the best they possibly can. All first party games should be patched to perform at the highest possible resolution and with the highest possible quality assets (4K/4K being the ultimate goal) for Scorpio and 3rd parties should be encouraged to do so especially if the assets exist from PC dev.
  • Exclusives going forward need to be on point (as in quality games that review well....80+ metacritic)
  • They need some new IP (whether this is in house or through a 2nd party deal, we need a new IP like Gears for this gen)
  • They need to bring back some old favorites of IPs they own as new games in the series (Conker, Banjo, Perfect Dark, Fusion Frenzy, MechAssault, Crimson Skies, etc.). No more remakes please....spend dev cycles on new installments
  • Don't rush VR. Make sure it's the best experience and preferably without wires.
  • 3rd party parity - PS4 owns this right now. From the recent crop of Japanese games to the quality indie scene (i.e. Double Fine releasing Broken Age, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle on PC/PS4 but not Xbox...other titles coming 6+ months later (Rocket League, Firewatch, etc.).
  • Get more aggressive on the marketing side. It's pretty ridiculous to see the PS4 all over the biggest 3rd party releases this fall (Destiny, Battlefront 2, Call of Duty)...MS has dropped the ball on this big time IMO.
  • Get as many Xbox 360 games back compat as possible. I'm only like 3 or so back compat games away from ditching my Xbox 360
  • I think the Scorpio box needs to look good. It needs to be something people want to have in the entertainment center. The PS4 Pro is god awful looking
  • Back compat with OG Xbox games (this would be cool but more of an outlying nice to have than necessary...and I also realize this may not be possible due to the Nvidia licensing crap and other licensing issues)
If MS can do most/all of the above, they would make a huge comeback this gen. I mean they've had a mini comeback since the S released but that has largely been stifled by the PS4's 4 or 5 quality releases in Q1 this year (I just mean the momentum swung back to the PlayStation side). Also I say make all games possible Play Anywhere. This spreads the risk of development especially in regards to a new IP (also nice to be able to play these games on my new laptop with GTX 1060/6GB GDDR5 as well as Xbox).

Sure, "content" because we didn't have DLC in the console space until the PS2/Xbox Original gen.
