Not doing what you expect is fine but when a character has already existed for 3 movies you probably need to make sure that character's actions actually vibe with what has already been seen
We haven’t seen that character for decades (i the movie timeline) so how do you know how he would be by this point? What would you have done differently?
Well you need a better explanation for it in the movie. I don't buy Luke giving up and sitting on an island to die when the Luke we last saw would have gone to any length to save the people he cared about. Ben Solo turned? Big deal. He ignored everything he was told about Vader and tried to turn him back and did.
How does that fit with the story they are trying to tell now? It’s obvious they are trying to take Star Wars (this trilogy) in their own direction. From the looks of it a lot of people are not happy with that direction.
Now I’m curious what Abrams will do next and what he would have done with The Last Jedi and it’s overall story if he would have made the film.
Luke was ashamed and utterly humbled to the point that he wanted to turn away from the Force. Little did he know that the Force works in mysterious ways...yeah this was pretty much a story of faith.True. Why didn't Luke join the Rebels and help Leia instead of hiding away?
Or if its to awkward being around Han and Leia, go after Snoke alone?

In terms of the movie "going in a different direction," I mean, it had the First Order as the villains and the Rebels as the heroes. Seems like the same direction as always.
Also how great was that blue milk scene?
Turns away from The Force.
