UK weekly numbers for God of War:

Week 1: GOD OF WAR (SONY COMPUTER ENT.) - 96,000 / NEW
Week 2: GOD OF WAR (SONY COMPUTER ENT.) - 62,000 / 158,000 (-35%)

For comparison, Horizon:

Week 1: HORIZON ZERO DAWN (SONY COMPUTER ENT.) - 114,000 / NEW
Week 2: HORIZON ZERO DAWN (SONY COMPUTER ENT.) - 46,000 / 160,000 (-60%)

God of War sold 3.1 million in 3 days. Fastest selling PS4 exclusive

Well if there's any takers. I will bet my account gow debuts to sub gow3 numbers in the USA. Anyone can take me up on it.

For context:

Uncharted 4 sold 2.7 million in a week.
Horizon sold 2.6 million in two weeks.
Super Mario Odyssey sold 2 million in 3 days
Zelda BotW sold 3.8 million in its first month (incl Wii U)
Halo 5 sold 5 million in 3 months

GoW 3 sold 5.2 million lifetime, so this game will easily exceed that.

Always happy to see excellent SP games succeed.

I wonder how many consoles were sold at the time of each of those.

Install base plays a role, no doubt. Mario would probably be the fastest selling exclusive, if Switch had the install base that PS4 does, but it doesn't.

Looks to me like GoW will probably take the crown for fastest selling exclusive of the generation. The only possible contender I can think of is f*cking Pokemon. SMO and Zelda will probably beat it out for total overall sales.

When was the last GoW released? Maybe the thirst was at critical point? I dunno..

The last one didn't sell all that well, honestly it's the quality of the game that's pushing it to do so well. The last game was ascension and it sold just over 2 million copies lifetime, this game already smashed that in 3 days.

I need to correct what I was saying about "engagement." I had assumed that "engagement" meant per-player spending, because that was how it was talked about by some people at Reset.

After reading about it more, though, it is not at all clear to me how MS defines "engagement." Does it mean the amount of money spent on the service, or the amount of time spent on it? Does it mean "monthly active users"? Number of downloads? Does it include time spent in the various apps? Time spent playing games?

I have no idea. What's clear to me is that it isn't as simple as I thought. Engagement is not simply per-player spending. It seems to be one of those business terms that can be defined in all sorts of different ways.

I would think "engagement " referred to "interaction with", which would put it squarely in a very hard to parse territory .

Yeah, "interaction" or "engagement" could mean a lot of things. They probably have several ways of measuring it, and I'm sure player spending is one of them, but it could also be simple indexes like amount of time spent online or even amount of time with the console turned on.

An indication of how far behind the Xbox is in mainland Europe. Last weeks Italy sales:

Top 50

PlayStation 4 - 35
Nintendo Switch - 10
PlayStation 3 - 2
Xbox 360 - 2
Xbox One - 1

Yes you read that right, one Xbox One game in the whole of the top 50! Italy is one of Europe's biggest gaming markets too.

Current Amazon best selling consoles:

  1. Super NES Classic
  2. Nintendo Switch
  3. PS4 Slim
  4. Xbox One X
  5. PS Pro God of War Edition
  6. Xbox One S Hot Wheels bundle
  7. Xbox One S Standard
  8. PS Pro

All in the top 100.

Interesting that the X is outselling (for this snapshot of amazon, anyhow) the base console.

And nostalgia sure is strong (NES classic leading the pack).

I think there are 6 bundles of Xbox One S on Amazon (of course the rest fall under the top 100). I suspect if you combine all 6 bundles, they out perform the X1X. Xbox is relying on a lower price and bundled games, where as the PS4 can sell on it's own without a bundle and at a higher price.

Ah, I see. That did seem pretty remarkable, that the X would outsell the standard version. The Pro only comprises about 20% to 25% of PS4 sales, so I wouldn't expect the X to do a whole lot more than that (although it's got more going for it, as an upgrade, than the Pro does). I'm really curious about the split, but I doubt we'll ever get numbers.

I am happy with my Pro, but if Sony announces a Pro Slim and the fan is quiet, I will be trading my Pro in for that. You are correct in that the jump from PS4 to PS Pro isn't as big as the X jump, which to me means that with as good as the standard PS4 looks, the incentive isn't there like it is for an X. Had the Xbox One S been made to match the standard PS4 in performance, I would suspect that maybe the X wouldn't sell like it does.

I am quoted here as to saying the X1X will be out of the top 100 after December. It is now May, and I am wrong as usual. So disregard anything I say. I apparently don't know jack s***.

I would do the same, but with all these PS5 rumors I think I'll just hold on to mine.

I am thinking 2020 for that. Look at how long the PS3 went before the PS4 came. And now that we have a MID gen console, I wonder if it will be even longer? This is the first time we have had these more powerful mid gen consoles.

I wouldn't mind if an Xbox Two and PS5 came out next year. I would buy them day one. But I am not gonna get my hopes up.

UK sales for the week:

1. God of War
2. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
3. Far Cry 5
4. Fifa 18
5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
6. Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2
7. Fallout 4
8. PUBG
9. Star Wars Battlefront II
10. Super Mario Odyssey

Sea of Thieves is at 11, which actually represents a 63% increase from last week. Guess there was some kind of deal.

GoW sold 27K this week (down 56% from last week), so it's not a big-numbers week for any of these games.

Labo dropped to 13, so that's not doing real well.

Really cannot see anything taking God Of War's top spot for another week unless FIFA has a craze with the world cup and Champions League final upon us and one of the teams in the final is from England. I think God Of War will take top again next week.

There is one game that's vastly "outselling" God of War, and it's not even close.

I’m a big FO4 fan, but damn. Staying power.

Maybe using current bestseller lists from amazon isn't a reliable way to gauge sales, if it can change so much from day to day. Sounds like it's just a snapshot at one point in time, not an average over time, and so it would shift around quite a bit.

Does amazon have cumulative stats, such as "most popular in April" or "most popular in 2018," that sort of thing? If so, that might provide more reliable info.
