What movies have you seen recently?

Man of Steel

Have to say that I really didn't enjoy it that much. If I didn't rent it with the free Playstation money they give you, I would feel I wasted five bucks.

Iron Man 3

I love the first Iron Man, but this one was just a small improvement if any over the average second film. Kind of disappointed with it.
Edit: Actually the more I think about it, I prefer Iron Man 2 over the third one.

So the last 3 days I have watched a Bourne( original Trilogy) Movie everyday.

Bourne Identity - 9/10
Bourne Supremacy - 8.5/10
Bourne Ultimatum - 8.7/10

For me the Boune Trilogy is one of the most consistent Trilogies out there. The actions scenes are awesome. The writing is very solid. The directing is great. The acting is Solid. These 3 movies are easily right up there with my favorite action movies ever.

I completely agree.

I completely agree.

Even as a fan of the fourth movie ( Legacy). It is very easy to see how far behind the Original trilogy. It just lacks that Atmosphere. The writing and directing just fall short too. Shame really. I Would love to see Greengrass and damon back on board and them including the Cross/Jeremy Renner character/actor.

I remember hating the camera work in the Bourne sequels. Just shaking all over the place. Some could be eating a sub and the camera would shake like a volcano erupting beneath them.

So one of my best friends has some connections, and she's on the list that gets screeners before they even hit the theater. I was visiting last week and she had a copy of 'Lone Survivor' starring Mark Wahlberg so we watched it.

If you're a fan of war movies, you'll definitely like it, but it's pretty harsh. It's very well done and the fact that it's a true story made it more interesting. Wahlberg is really good as well.

Timecrimes.

Much of the plot was super predictable. I feel like this would have been a better movie had it been given a different name as you immediately know how 2/3rds of the movie will play out just by looking at the cover/title. As things started falling into place, at times it felt silly and mechanical. Like they didn't know how to work some of this stuff into the story naturally so they just toss it in all willy nilly like.

3/5 pretty good.

Hobbit: dos 7/10

Fun movie. much better than the first, though still overuse of cgi. could have done without the added
Tauriel plot

Wait....much better than the first but only get s a 7/10...WTF.

I thought the first was pretty awesome. The first half was a bit slower than maybe some would like...but from the trolls onward it was fantastic.

The first one just didn't work for me. it felt too much like a kids fantasy movie, and disconnected from the lotr trilogy.

I agree with this. It was stupid slow in the beginning. Hopefully I'll get to see it next week.

Speaking of Heat I just watched Mann's Thief from 1981. Pretty badass. Lot of similarities to Heat actually. Mann sure likes his diners.

The Hobbit films as a whole feel kinda unnecessary. We've seen the likes of it already for more than 10 hours of running time, I don't think we need another 10 hours of the same stuff. The first film only strenghtened that opinion of mine, even when things got a little more interesting later in the narrative.

You know, there is a Blu-ray coming out from The Criterion Collection next month. Dat opening where Tangerine Dream soundtrack is mixed with loud drilling noise, now on glorious well-remastered HD. I can't wait.

Speaking of the opening...
(Do not watch this if you haven't seen the movie and are buying blu-ray next month, save it for later on higher definition)

Thief is a wonderful movie as well.

Without even realizing it I've gone through most of Mann's movies. I know you're a fan of Miami Vice, which I want to see next. Think you're the only person I know that liked it.

Sounds good. I usually need a good three or four years between re-watching movies though haha. Should have waited for the blu ray.

Dat soundtrack tho.

Add me to that list. I think aceattorney liked it too.

Higher definition really helps Thief btw. It helps most movies, but when it comes to this film, there are two factors that makes it peculiar. First, the DVD plain sucks. Picture quality is bad, re-edited scenes were bad, sound quality is somewhat murky, etc. Which is a shame because the movie is especially filled with particle-heavy visual effects and sounds are intermingled everywhere. When I first watched it on DVD I was not that blown away (and I am a die-hard Mann fan), but half a year later I got a chance to watch it on theater, and holy mother of god... That attention to detail can never be seen in a bad DVD transfer.

Yeah, I watched it on Netflix and while the quality wasn't terrible you could see that it, well, it could look and sound a lot better. I've pretty much got a thing for rainy streets where street and car lights are just bouncing off the reflections, Mann did that a lot in Thief. All I could think was how good it would look in better quality. He also did that trademark "hood" shot that he uses in a lot of movies (and I saw it in the Miami Vice TV show) that I also love, the one that kind of looks like this (this is just a random image, not a shot from a movie of his):

Love the sounds in that diner scene too. The cars driving past outside and the clinking of cutlery and plates. Ugh, now I really regret not seeing the blu ray haha...

By the way, did you watch Manhunter? I think it was you who was asking about it a few weeks back.

Yep, it is coming on Friday. International forwarding service bottlenecked during Black Friday season, and it is finally coming. With it and Thief, now I have collected most of Mann's films on BD.

I liked Miami Vice also i thought it was good.

Elysium - 7/10 it looked great on Blu Ray and its a cool future world. As for the movie itself i thought it was a decent sci fi flick worth the rent. But compaired to District 9 its a letdown.
