All Digital Future - The Loss Of Physical Games And Media

it is absolutely possible to have digital as product as well. In fact we already have these, aka NFTs.

it’s just not financially beneficial for software and game companies. Why sell you a product and charge once, when we can make it a service and you pay every month.

With the Sony sales leak and recent data, physical is still preferred over digital for PS at least

Physical games make up 60% of 1st party unit sales for Sony, for games like Death Stranding (PS5) and Uncharted 4 physical sales are more than 80%

I know I've bought two physical games off Amazon this year, simply because the sale was better than the digital one. Not sure why they are doing that again, but the Amazon disc price was $5 cheaper than the digital sale. I prefer digital, but am getting tired of having to pay more for it.

It's weird. I took inventory of all my games this generation and surprisingly, without my awareness, I've nearly switched over being almost completely digital when it comes to games.

Obviously on PC, Physical stopped being a thing a while ago, so the last Physical disk I have for PC is Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.

On the console side, looking at my shelf I have a bunch of Xbox One and PS4 disks. I have exactly ZERO PS5 or Xbox Series disks. Strangely enough ALL my Switch games are physical cartridges.( Might be a sales thing with Nintendo)

I just didn't expect my purchasing habits to change so drastically under my nose. Should Nintendo ever start putting their games on PC, physical copies will be a thing of the past for me I guess.

Haven't bought a physical game since I bought the One X and before that it was maybe a handful of games for the Xbone. Just make limited editions or such for the few that still lives in the 90s and let the future have its course, lol physical media.

Digital only future and games lul

How is this different from steam?
I never quite understand why there are so many steam cultists on PC.
I had Steam for ages, & they never gave me free games, unlike Epic Store.

Also there is nothing stopping you to have both steam & epic store on PC. Its not like console where you cannot use xbox store or PS store if you do not own the platform.

Steam also charged a ridiculous fee of 30% royalty for dev despite not being a hardware platform owner.
Some PC gamers have short memory. PC games used to cost significantly (about 10 bucks) less than console game as dev do not have to pay royalty to platform owner.

Steam did a swap of hand that few notice over the years to curently, now PC game are similar if not same as consoles

If anything competition is good. But tell that to the steam cultists.

Sadly, all the GameStops near my place are shut down & there is no option to easily sell of or trade physical games.

It is still good if you have friends/family members that can exchange games with, I did that when iI was younger. We will buy different games, and then swap.

The issue of digital media is more than just the medium but the swap of hand-turning games/software as product to service, which is what more and more software dev turned to.

You cannot just buy software these days, Every F software is a service that demands monthly payment.
Our 3D design software, now a sub model, your photoeditor, now also a sub model, your office tools like excel, also sub model......
I have to cut Autodesk Maya, MS office, photoshop etc, & use alternatives & the pain to relearn years of expertise.

How they all do it. When I moved house most of my digital collection on Xbox was made worthless due to no broadband.
Sony have the same issue.

An all digital future doesn't benefit gamers at all.

Okay, I should've been more clear... I meant physical media in regards to movies, shows and games.
And yes, there's the problem with stuff disappearing from stores because rights etc, but I've never happened upon any game I've bought that couldn't re-download even if it's not for sale anymore... at least not in regards to xbox, Sony might be a bit more unsecure in that regards since they've made some questionable decisions before (ps3 store if I remember correctly?).

It’s nice all my digital games have carried over each console cycle and I don’t have cases everywhere. I have to separate movie shelves 4 rows tall full of Blu Rays and 4K cases. Going to be nice all my Switch purchases carrying over to the next console.

What makes you think Nintendo will be generous enough to let you play your games on the next console?

The worst thing about physical media is storage and the obscene time it takes to box everything up when you move. I've got an obscene number of CDs and records still (which I probably listen to one or two a year, and use Spotify the rest of the time), and I'm actively still buying a lot of Bluray & 4KUHD's. I enjoy being a collector, but I also feel weighted down by it all.

I'm trying to talk myself into scaling back on a lot of media in my collection in 2024, but I can't just give it away or toss it. I imagine any shop that still buys and sells used media will likely give me next to nothing for most items these days, and selling them all one by one on Ebay or Amazon Resale will need to become a part time job.

With their family plan/yearly online subscription and being able to play your digital content across different accounts on your plan seems like your stuff will continue to work across Switch and Switch 2…. I hope.

I'll never understand the point of Ubisoft's game streaming. It is one thing to do it on the scale of MS Game Pass, but it has to be cheaper to just buy the ubisoft games you want. They don't have the games for it, and their older games can just be bought for cheap.

2022:

“I think [Game Pass] will stay in that 10 to 15 percent of our overall revenue, and it's profitable for us. We're seeing incredible growth on PC... on console I've seen growth slow down, mainly because at some point you've reached everybody on console that wants to subscribe.” - Phil Spencer
