The spaces between realities!
So this is something that has been on my mind for some time. Nearing the big '30' (I'm 28 now) I realize somethings about my body will definitely need to be maintained in order to keep up.

I've actually always had a fairly cut physical appearance. I go to the gym at least 3 times a week (or rather I try) and also keep up on my protein intake.
Problem is is that increasingly I'm finding it difficult to have time to do this stuff (go to the gym).

Anyway, I wanted to ask you guys if you find it easy to keep in shape? Also are you in shape? How often do you go to the gym?

Getting older hits you. I used to never get sick and miss school or work. All through school and university, I probably missed about 20 days of school and half of those were me faking it worse than it was. But now, I seem to get a case of the flu, fever every year for a few days here and there. And now, I occasionally get a long lasting cough every few years which I never got when I was younger. I don't smoke so it doesn't have anything to do with that.

People say I should eat more vitamins and such. I've been doing that lately and I'll see how it goes. I never grew up eating supplements.

I also never used to get strains, but a year ago I strained my back just getting out of bed and couldn't move for 3 days! Fook! Even squatting for stretches of time (such as when I wash and scrub the wheels of my car), leads me to have some sore knees for a day or two.

Sounds rough man.
Yup. Nothing like having a cough for two weeks no matter what antibiotics you get from the doc. It sucks because I'm fine in terms of mental state, but it's one of those things that is probably contagious so I worked from home a bunch of days for sake of not spreading it. And I don't want coworkers to be irritated that someone is coughing every 5 minutes.

I hate working at home too due to not having the big LCD screen at my desk. Trying to do massive spreadsheets on a 15" work laptop and pulling data remotely from the servers is painful. And then the random dropped connection from VPN right in the middle of server pulls. Great.

I don't go to the gym at all and pretty much never have. It's not that I don't have the time, it's more that I'd rather spend my time doing other things, haha. Of course, since I don't workout it means I'm certainly not 'cut' or 'jacked' by any stretch of the imagination, but I at least still maintain a respectable slim and trim shape due to smart and healthy dietary choices. I eat what's called a 'Paleolithic' or similar 'Ketogenic' diet. It's nothing too fancy, just basically a diet low in sugars and carbs and high in proteins and fats. I won't go into detail here as there's plenty of better literature out there, but if you're worried about how to stay slim you should look into it. On the other hand, if you're more worried about how to stay 'ripped', then yeah, you're just gonna have to make time to workout. Do BOTH and, hey, you're set. This kind of diet also has great benefits to your overall health and immune system in many ways, as an added bonus

Hey LT,

I'm 40 and have a wife & two young sons. I have a career & my job is demanding but I believe my life is balanced. Anyway, two years ago I lost 80 pounds through diet & exercise. I felt great but staying in shape meant I had to make time for it. I honestly felt it was my time to be greedy with my time and get in shape and I did. I was running two or three days a week and attending a fitness boot camp.

I felt like a million bucks! Right now I have gained 25 or 30 pounds back & I'm on my way back to my low again. It's never ending for me. I really like to eat so exercise is the only way I can keep it off.

(But I recently had to stop drinking booze & eating like crap like I used to do. Here we go again!)

With age it doesn't get any easier.

And thanks LT for making this thread.

I was going to eat something bad and not work out . . . Now I'm going to do it right and work out tonight.

Never quit!

I have started to take health very seriously since the last 1.5 years. I work out at least 4 days a week and eat very healthy. I am now meal prepping as well. Health is something most take for granted. Just imagine if you are sick, you would not be able to enjoy anything including all the money in the world or most importantly your family.

Here are before and after pics:

I've been driving a very long commute to work so my time has been rare as of late so my diet/exercise has fallen. However, I am moving into my new house in a few weeks which will essentially give me 2 hours more a day of free time! I am going to buy a treadmill < $1500 and really get at it. Any suggestions?

Hey man,

I bought a Precor Elliptical trainer for my home workouts. I also run in my neighborhood. I'm glad you are getting those two hours back!

Not really. But i'm not really out of shape either in my book. Maybe it's just denial. I just don't work out and keep drinking beer and eating fast food. That's never going to end well lol. I'm 6'0, 205 lbs. I've been gaining weight here and there over the years but i was skinny as a kid and only weighed 130 lbs for years. Now i've been around 200 lbs for as long as i can remember. Which would be fine if it was all muscle but i could stand to lose 20-30 lbs. I'm going to be 29 in two weeks so it's probably a good time to get in shape. I won't be young forever.

Every time I take my shirt off I run the risk of being arrested for illegally carrying 2 guns. Thus, I try to keep them concealed as much as possible.

Here is a tip; you do not need a gym. You do not need to use fancy machines or barbells or dumbbells. The Joy of Bodyweight training is that it is cheap, can be done any where. Most seems to use it in a HIIT type of routine(optional) which means helps keep cardio in check too. You can shed weight, build muscle and strength.

Go to a gym, squat, bench, and deadlift. Easy.

I agree with LT. What do you eat?

You look great bro!

Hey guys thanks!

My diet depends on if I am gaining or cutting but basically it consists of:
- my body weight in protein (g) per day = usually 150-200g per day
- no carbs after 6pm, except for days I carb load
- I don't eat sweets, cupcakes, cookies, etc
- I don't do soda
- I can have 1-2 days with cheat meals, this is OK
- Alkie in moderation, glass of wine per day
- 7+ hours of sleep daily
- 2200 calories a day during lean season and 3500-4000 calories during bulk

Basically eating pretty lean and healthy daily. My advantage is that I can't stand sweets so I stay away from sugary foods/drinks.

I used to be 20-22% BF and currently am at around 10%. It's just a culmination of knowing what works for your body in terms of diet and workout. Just keep it sensible, don't be too strict but be disciplined.

My daily "diet" looks something like this, more meat though:

I've also been known to try this philosophy on for size:

5'11", 175 lbs. 17 percent body fat according to the machine at the mall. Not bad for an old fart that doesn't workout.

Im pretty fit. but I'm not body building. I'm at the age where working out is to keep my blood pressure down, stay injury free (still playing team sports) and be able to enjoy drinking beer without looking like a pig.

i do 3 days or free weights and two days of cardio a week.
