This Is the 1080p/60FPS Game That God of War Dev Was Teasing

Ahead of Sony's PlayStation Experience event this week, a newPlayStation 4 game has been revealed. Called Bound, this is the mysterious project that God of War developer Sony Santa Monica was teasing earlier this week. The game is in development at Plastic, the studio behind Linger In Shadows andDatura.

Bound aims to be "quite unique in visual style, narrative storytelling, and also mechanics," game director Michal Staniszewski said in a post on the PlayStation Blog.

"Bound is a 3D platformer designed for people with the desire to concentrate on the narrative side of games and experience a mature story," he added. "On the other side of the spectrum, Bound is also being prepared for hardcore gamers looking for the challenge of one big puzzle that can be only solved by a community of players working together."

Staniszewski added: "We are going to deliver a 'notgame' to you, which is also a game. It's up to you to decide how you would like to play."

As you'll see in the screenshots and video here, the art style for Bound takes inspiration from movements like Suprematism, Concretism, Neoplasticism, and the works of Bauhaus. These movements have not been explored much in games to date, Staniszewski said.

The main character of Bound is a ballerina (now that teaser makes more sense) whose actions were captured through a motion-capture process from the real world dancer Maria Udod. The game's music, meanwhile, aims to mix ballet and electroacoustic tunes that were performed by Oleg "Heinali" Shpudeiko.

In terms of resolution and performance, Bound will run at an "ultra-sharp anti-aliased" 60 FPS in 1080p.

"We have spent more than a year on optimizations, just to deliver you a game that will squeeze the most of your PS4," Staniszewski said.

Bound is being produced in collaboration with Sony Santa Monica. No release date was announced, but we may learn more about PlayStation Experience this weekend.

Cool. Sounds interesting. Hard to know exactly what kind of game experience they are going to offer, but I'm intrigued by these phrases:

  • Unique in visual style, narrative storytelling, and also mechanics.
  • A 3-D platformer designed for people with the desire to concentrate on the narrative side of games and experience a mature story.
  • "The challenge of one big puzzle that can be only solved by a community of players working together."
  • "We are going to deliver a 'notgame' to you, which is also a game. It's up to you to decide how you would like to play."

Bellybama is hoping for there to a companion app called 'Gagged'.

I posted this in another thread, but it fits better here.

I ran across some gameplay footage of Bound. Gotta say, I like the aesthetic. I also like the idea of the graceful movement, though I'm not sold on the actual interaction being all that unique ( looks like standard platforming outside of the animation style). I'd like to see them push the animation in context of it's actual environmental interaction to provide something a bit more groundbreaking. Loved the concept, but when I see the character climbing ladders instead of bounding around all of those cubic surfaces, I get a little disappointed. even hopping from one platform to another looks pretty standard. As of right now, It just looks like a stylish platformer.

Could they not find a more stereotypical pair of gamer dudes? Both look like nerdy dorks that likely haven't been laid, and live in mummies basement.

The game looks OK, but the game-play shown here is very simple and unexciting. The movement seems fine, lots of ballerina-esque movements and it looks like you have multiple options for the moves you use to move around. The animations could use a little work, though.

The aesthetics, eh, I am not feeling them. The world shown here seems far too simplistic, and the abstract effect going on does nothing to help that.

Why do they keep announcing indie games as Sony Santa Monica releases?

It's like an intentional bait and switch.

Yeah, the hipster is strong with these two.

I really like the look, though it's hardly original. I love all the movement in the background, and all the pieces. I thought it was a stretch calling it bauhaus though. The art direction isn't all that unique. I'd even argue it's pretty trendy. What else did he call it? Concretism? lols

 Something like that.

Looks like something different. Could be good. I just wouldn't expect something like Bound to come from Sony Santa Monica. They need to try their hand at something else though so i'm all for it.
