Breaking news: Appeals court rejects key part of Obamacare.

The battle over Obamacare took a dramatic turn Tuesday with a federal appeals court rejecting subsidies paid by the government to millions of new enrollees. In a 2-1 ruling, a three-judge panel found the federal money that helped people afford health insurance only could go to those who signed up through exchanges run by states. That's what the law specified, the ruling said, meaning those who signed up through the federal government aren't eligible for the subsidies that helped them afford coverage.

Only 16 states and the District of Columbia set up their own exchanges, meaning that the 4.7 million who signed up for subsidized health coverage overall under Obamacare through HealthCare.gov could be affected. President Barack Obama's administration will appeal the decision to the full D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, the Justice Department announced, and the case will likely reach the Supreme Court.

Interesting. Curious how things will happen in the future. Seems like Obamacare is a whole mess at the moment.

If the final result backs the appeals decision, the result would wipe out subsidies and undermine a key component of Obamacare's requirement that all Americans obtain health coverage. The easiest fix -- changing the law to specify that it allows subsidies for coverage purchased through the federal government as well as state exchanges -- would mean reopening the debate over the 2010 Affordable Care Act that passed with zero Republican support. Republicans now control the House and are expected to make gains in the November election, perhaps also gaining a majority in the Senate. That means Obama and Democrats have no chance of getting Congress to approve needed changes in the law despised by the political right.

Can we just catch up every first world country(i think) and some 2nd and 3rd world country and just get a single payer system or some hybrid of it already. the communism/socialism arguements are so f***ing stupid. T

It isn't as simple as that... right now, Obamacare is threatening MY personal health insurance to the point that I fear the day it grabs hold of us.

Our insurance as of now is fantastic. However, there was a brief moment where they told us that our insurance may drop us due to Obamacare and that we would be forced to enroll (luckily they didn't).

Reasons we are happy?

Our premium per month would have TRIPLED
Our out of pocket deductible before stuff got billed to the "insurance?" 20,000 USD
Medications? easily quadrupled in price.

Basic fact... under Obamacare, the wife and I make too much to qualify for subsidies, YET, would barely be able to afford even the most basic of services. If we were forced to join OC, I would literally have to quit my job so we could get assistance to pay for it.

@illiniguy I don't believe you. You've misrepresented information in the past based on your political views.

Almost all the horror stories about Obamacare costs I've read have been debunked. I find your cost claims very hard to take serious.

You care to share details about your location and employer so we can verify your claims?

I currently have health insurance through a private insurance company in central illinois as mandated by the State of Illinois. As a side effect of retaining our insurance, our premium went up anyway.

Using the Obamacare calculator, the website for enrollment and thru discussions on the phone with representatives, those figures were what we were given over 4 months ago.

Call me a liar all you want, but the basic fact is that is what we were told.

I don't personally care if you think I am politically biased in this regard, because I am not. I AM however, against the ridiculous rules and requirements for that dumbass plan. It may get many ON healthcare by forcing them to do so, but it hurts many others in other ways.

Our insurance company had to appeal and debate with the state of Illinois just to remain a provider. IL was pushing hard to get the Obamacare forced into place, and as such, many private insurance companies outright dropped people, people I know.

Maybe it has changed, but it doesn't matter right now for me. We have a guaranteed 3 years of not having to get onto that horrendous plan. After that, assuming our insurance does not continue, we will have to goto Blue Cross/Shield or Obamacare. If we goto BC/BS, we are going to have to drive almost two hours to get to an "in network" hospital for ER visits or standard visits.. fun times.

Obamacare is well intentioned, but extremely poorly operational in practice.

I hate Obama for other reasons than this, mostly because I DID vote for him I feel betrayed by his actions. However, when we faced those higher fees and deductibles, I did get a little more hatred for the man.

Side note @horns... I have no idea what came about in "horror" stories with OC. I don't follow them, don't care to. This is just what we were facing. like it or not, the "LIBERAL" media are likely the ones "debunking" these horror stories. I wouldn't put much faith in those as well.

I don't have time to debunk all your claims, nor do I have your information to verify your claims. However, your deductible claims of "$20,000" is easy to debunk. The law puts deductible limits at half of what you're claiming, "$6,350 for an individual plan and $12,700 for a family plan" https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/out-of-pocket-maximum-limit/

A quick look at BCBS of Illinois shows plans ranging from $250 to $700 for a mid-30s married couple who don't smoke. Obviously premiums are higher and lower based on the plans you choose. https://retailweb.hcsc.net/retailshoppingcart/IL/plans?b=0 Not sure where you live in IL, but their map doesn't show any huge gaps that would require a two-hour drive.

I am not denying that Obamacare didn't raise prices. It did. It did also give you a lot more for paying more. What I am having trouble understanding is the hardships you're claiming. Like I said, your deductible claim is not the truth. So, I find your claims of driving 2 hours for ER or standard visits, quadrupled medication costs and tripled premium hard to swallow. You having to quit your job just so you could get assistance is especially troubling. And the fact that you keep referring to Obamacare as joining like it's an actual insurance plan is a red flag. You don't join BCBS or Obamacare. BCBS is a provider under Obamacare, as are the other insurance providers. It's still a providers marketplace, there's no new government plan besides Medicaid expansion.

Thanks for posting this, smurf. I haven't paid much attention to the news lately, so I missed it. I need to keep an eye on the Obamacare situation, and specifically on those subsidies, because it may affect my plans for the future. Gracias.

What's up Qbert, want to derail another thread? I'll let you pick which side I'll side take and debate for 3 days.
Just kidding I'm staying off this one. :-->: What does this symbol mean anyways?

Funnies for everyone, little gift, from me to you.
That Rocky Xbox commercial has me in such a good mood.

lol, you funny.
And still wrong in the thread. So wrong, that you've yet to prove me wrong.

As for this thread, , there's really nothing for me to say. There's been good and bad sides to it, so both side coming out with talking points are usually valid.

It's simpler than most people think imo....You already have the base program in place with medicare.

You would simply have to expand and state everybody is covered now by medicare. boom.

You know what I find funny? Our military personal, while I think they totally deserve it, get the same benefits other countries give to their entire population lol.

Free healthcare, free or really subsidized education etc etc.

But capitalism amirite? Capitalism for the top 10%, indentured servitude for the rest.
