The creators of Dead Space are making this year's Call of Duty
Activision switches to three year dev cycle, Sledgehammer takes the wheel

Sledgehammer Games - home to Dead Space creators Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey - will develop this year's "highly innovative" Call of Duty, Activision has announced in its Q4 2013 earnings call.

Rather shockingly, the publisher has also revealed that three developers will work on Call of Duty games in tandem from this point on - Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Sledgehammer. Activision will still release a Call of Duty game every year, which means that each studio will have three years to develop a game.

The move is seemingly a reaction to popular misgivings about Call of Duty: Ghosts, released in November. The game has apparently sold well - according to Activision Blizzard president Bobby Kotick, it "was the number one game across all platforms and the number one next generation game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in both North America and Europe in the fourth quarter" - but has reaped the lowest review scores of any Call of Duty title on Xbox 360.

This year's Call of Duty will be "perhaps the best Call of Duty game ever created", Kotick promised. Chief financial officer Dennis Durkin added that it will be "highly innovative", but was unable to say why. Let's take a rain-check on that.

Switching to a three-year development cycle will "ensure even greater levels of innovation and creative excellence for each Call of Duty title", according to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.

"There are several advantages of doing this," he continued. "The first is, of course quality. This will give our designers more time to envision and to innovate for each title. Simultaneously it will give our content creators more focus on DLC and micro DLC, which as you know have become large and high margin opportunities and significant engagement drivers.

"Finally, it will give our teams more time to polish, helping to ensure that we delivered the best possible experience to our fans each and every time."

Naturally, Hirshberg had warm words for Sledgehammer, which he described as "a AAA studio built from the ground up around proven talent with a 90 plus rate of pedigree, both in studio leadership and throughout the organization".

"They've demonstrated their skill on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and on their past highly rated games. They are the perfect choice to support our new approach and bring fresh ideas and creativity to this great franchise and to raise the bar for next-gen games overall, which we believe they can do. We look forward to sharing more details on future calls.

"Looking forward to 2014, as both Bobby and I said, we think we have a superlative game in the works and that we have some new approaches this year that we think are going to be very positive, with the three-year development cycle with the injection as a lucrative leadership from some very intelligent folks at Sledgehammer games. And that we think the 2014 game is going to be one of if not the best Call of Duty game ever."

Any thoughts on the likelihood of that, boys and girls? I think I may have heard this tune before, but the three-year dev cycle could have dramatic implications.
The cycle between developers will be, Sledgehammer Games in 2014, Treyarch in 2015 and Infinity Ward in 2016.

I am disappointed that the next game isn't by Treyarch, i was expecting something very fresh from Treyarch on next gen cause they are by far the superior COD devs. but 3 year cycle for each Dev should be a good thing for the franchise cause Ghosts is just terrible

also my guess is we wont see a new engine until Treyarch's COD cause Sledgehammer cant handle something like a new engine.

Activision has just confirmed Sledgehammer Games is working on Call of Duty 2014. Activision CEO has announced that Activision is transitioning into a 3 year development cycle for Call of Duty franchise to allow for better game development and DLC for other games.

Here’s a statement from Sledgehammer Games:

Activision CEO said he has full confidence in Sledgehammer Games to deliver one of the best Call of Duty titles ever.

Activision CEO has stated that more information regarding Sledgehammer’s title will be announced in the months ahead. With this new 3 year development cycle, Treyarch fans will have to wait till 2015 for the next Treyarch title.

Big news for the biggest game in the biz right now.

COD will be this gen FF? Where no one cares about it anymore. So much milking.

Well, can they at least make COD that isn't just modern warface, like Vietnam war or some other war that may or may not necessary involve US.

That "famousmortimer" guy from neogaf said this on a podcast a couple of months ago, I guess he gets real info :)

I have pretty much been talking about this the whole time & it seems like the rumors I heard were true. They were trying to give TreyArch the time they needed finally to build a next-gen engine for Black Ops 3.

So it's like:
2013 - Ghost spin-off, takes up a year, still sells the brand
2014 - Sledgehammer: steps in with the proven Modern Warfare (4) franchise
2015 - TreyArch: 360 is finally out of the way, no need for ports from it, has the extra time they've always needed to make a brand-new next-gen engine finally for Black Ops 3/Zombies

So Sledgehammer gets the 2014 Call of Duty release. Awesome, can't wait for Modern Warfare 4.

Awesome. I wouldn't mind if Activation axed Treyarch all together after the piece of sh!t that was Black ops II.

This is a relief. Me and my friends' tradition can continue until the end of 2015.

Treyarch sucks. Blops 2 was the worst COD ever. More so than Ghosts. Yep, I said it. Blow me.

I just hope HQ gets put back into the MP modes, that was all I played.

I'll buy a new COD when they do the following:

100% dedicated servers
Server browser (matchmaking sucks in ANY online game, always has, always will)
They do something fresh like set it 200 years in the future with particle weapons and such

Until then they can keep their tired ass rehashed shovelware

heh boys
I frankly would like a return to WW2
still waiting for the sequel to brothers in arms

So let's just change the title of Call of Duty to this:

COD 14
COD 15
COD 16
COD 17
COD 18
COD 19
COD 20

It's the Madden of FPS. Still don't understand why a very accessible FPS game is so popular. I just hope the shooter industry doesn't keep trying to copy COD and actually stand their own ground to create new things and do things differently.

Maybe Sledgehammer can throw some life back into this series.

Just give the entire series to Treyarch. Too many hands in the cookie jar.

Well, there's still hope in the form of Cliffy B's new FPS. If he does indeed take us back to the good old days of pure skill arena FPS then I'll have found my new online fps MP game for many years to come.

Sold! I will buy them all day one, like I have all the others.

They need to completely re-do the engine. This engine is ancient and it shows. As much as fanboys want to harp on the fact that COD doesn't run at 1080p on X1, it shows how horribly dated the COD engine is. There's no way that next gen consoles shouldn't be able to run a game that looks that terrible.

New engine and netcode. Something new from the ground up.

I hate reading that so much. Black opps got me to play and enjoy cod for the first time via multi player, after playing ghost i think that may be my last cod game.

I actually think this is good news. Each dev now has 3 years to develop the game. Sledgehammer also could bring in new ideas. I wonder what the new CoD will be called? It won't be Black Ops 3 because that is T3's baby. So we will probably get a side campaign to Ghosts and maybe BOs.

I won't buy another Call of Duty until TreyArch makes it again and/or there is a new engine. I'm just done with them taking my money every year without any work put back into the game. This game was a disgrace on Xbox One this year, all they did was really change the lighting to bright yellow on some of the maps. Their laziness ='s me not buying, sticking to it. They have to earn my money from now on. lol.
