I heard it will be around 1GB.
f*** me. The battlefield patch is supposedly 1.8 gigs. The Fifa digital download is meant to be about 20 gigs. I'll be lucky if I'm playing any games by the following day.

bc they will work on the patch until release, and the discs are on their way to the stores now.
still, they could release a free utility disc you pickup with your system. Maybe handed out by the cashier.

So what are people to do who honestly don't have broadband? Take it to a FedEx Office and plug it in?

I'm sure they will have a disk ready to be sent out if you request one just like the PS4. Sony aren't shipping the disk in the box either. You have to contact them and tgey wikl send you one.

OMG complain complain complain. That's all people do these days. You asked for this, you got it. No internet? Get a 360.

Are people still worried about not having an internet connection? Damn I'd hate to live in your place.
not really. Places without internet can be pretty awesome :D . As a point, i was hoping to get one of these for my dad who lives on the edge of the Teton National Forrest in Wyoming.

I haven't bought a device in a long time that didn't have a day one update that was recommended, and when I first get a device the first thing I do is update it.

However, pretty unprecedented to sell a device that just doesn't work without it.

And to plan to do that for months. lol

You can update it before you give it to him.

Also, if he doesn't have internet, don't expect to be able to Skype with him.

Would rather not do the double shipping thing, but i might have to. And who cares about skype, bet me on this: It will be used as much as the video chat for 360 was. Nobody likes to answer a call and have all their business displayed. I got him a 360 because it was his first DVD player. He went on to pickup a couple games at his local feed store...yes, 360 games being sold at the same store you buy horse/cow/pig food from.

Both of these new systems require day one updates. So it doesn't surprise me they will not function properly. You can't even watch a blue ray movie on the ps4 without the day one patch. If you are unfortunate enough to live in an area without highspeed internet neither one of these systems is for you.

Q: Would someone be able to plug in the XboxOne, bypass connecting to the internet (for whatever reason), throw in a game disk and play a game?
Or is the console basically bricked as-is?

The initialization sequence probably has a step requiring you to enter a network ssid when you first start up. No way to bypass it.

Simply not true. PS4 plays games with no update. Xbox One doesn't.

It's a pretty big difference to anyone w/o internet. The PS4 features that require an update, for the most part, aren't needed by someone who has no internet anyways.

To people with internet access.. they'll probably want to update both consoles day one, so the difference isn't a big one.. but if you are having server issues on your PS4 you can still throw a game in if you feel like it.

MS's "$500 device that is useless without an update" is unprecedented.

The X1 won't be of much use if you have a SDTV either.
Time for an update if you don't have modern things.

Great point. Does your dad have an HDTV? Anyway, $500 + tax is a lot of money for Blu-Ray watching and a couple of games. If you have problems paying for double shipping, maybe saving $500 and getting your dad a cheap Blu-Ray player + 360 games instead is a better idea.
