Hello,

When Microsoft first revealed all their DRM, always connected plans I was one of the people who calmly said "meh". I told myself it wouldn't effect me as my internet is always connected and left on, but things have changed for me recently.

Skipping a few details I recently moved into a new place (September) and have just about got everything up and running. One of the first things I sorted was our internet provider, I did this before we even moved in as I know it usually takes a few weeks.

Well the initial install took longer than expected (provider cancelled first order without telling me, said we needed an engineer. I told them we didn't, I was correct!) but we eventually got there. Ever since we've been onto the phone to them about once a week since we had it installed over various issues.

They have since cut us off as apparently we haven't paid our bill, which we have. Called them up again and we got told "yes sorry, our mistake, your internet will be back on immediately"... it's been 24 hours, no internet, but they've refunded me a small amount of money for some reason.

So we have no internet and don't see how we're going to sort this out. They just don't listen to our requests and we are just about out of patience and ready to cancel which will be a lengthy process.

Looks like I'll have to take my Day One edition to my bloody parents house to update it, then play offline for a while. ALWAYS CONNECTED IS NOT THE FUTURE, I FEEL STUPID NOW FOR SAYING IT WAS. ARRRGGGGHHHH /RANT

these games are going to need online more and more, I have the feeling that your going to have not to many games and some games need online just to play the full version like some arcade titles now.

This might not be for you.

Ha, love the pic, appreciated. No sarcasm detected.

But yeah, could be limited enjoyability if I have no internet access.

And I don't know why they couldn't just slap it on a disc either, oh well.

Do you still have an internal network at least? I never thought about it, but things like SmartGlass might not require an internet connection to work as long as the machines can communicate with each other. That would mean you could still do the in game NPC phone/tablet stuff in DR3 for example if that is the case.

Yeah, internal stuff is fine. Hopefully smart glass elements will work, it's the only way the xbox one is coming into our house, I told my girlfriend we'll play together. What that really means is I'LL play, you hold the smart glass device.

Do you have a competitor you could go with?

I would switch if I got that sort of treatment, that s*** would piss me off!

To be honest "always online" was never truly always. The DRM was a bi-weekly check-in over any moderate internet connection to validate licenses for games on your hard drive. Since the vast majority of games and features on the modern consoles are heavily dependent on a network connection it probably seemed like a minor concession to Microsoft. I don't know that Microsoft ever labeled it as 'always' or if that was just internet misconceptions fueled by the competition and the media.

I think it was a sad strike against 'next gen' functionality and hope Microsoft is revisiting the functionality to find a better middle ground. I would like the ability to buy and load games from a disc but then would like to throw away the disc so it never has to be in the tray. Without an all or nothing solution it is probable a logistical impossibility. You would need two types of retail media, one that can be traded and resold and one that is just throw away for loading games

As far as the current solution, I think Microsoft is being short sighted by not offering alternative means for loading the day one update. Sony was letting people do this via a mail order disc or downloading to a USB stick. It seems silly to flop on your original stance and allow a 'disconnected' system but offer no way to use it until you connect. Maybe its too early and we will hear Microsoft's solution this week...

*clears throat* I told you so.. The internet in general is not dependable. It should be a bonus rather than something REQUIRED to play video games. This could effect anybody including people with internet. The beauty of a console is playing anywhere.

Why is it people bash MS for something, yet roll over and let their local ISP give them terrible service?

ISPs are notorious for having terrible customer service. Keep calling back and keep complaining (don't yell, stay calm). Ask to speak with someone higher up.

Well our internet is back on as of right now, hopefully it'll stay that way for the foreseeable future!

They have "refunded" me though, 2/3rds of what I initially paid, but whatever. One more c*** up by them and that's it, competitors are available in my area!
