DX12 Thread v. 2.0

I don't think menace-uk- is lying about DX12. He's just stating what we have been reading for the past 12 months regarding benefits of DX12 for PC and Xbox One. Phil Spencer has said that parts of DX12 are already used in the Xbox One SDK.
Personally I think the Xbox One will see benefits and I'm pretty sure menace-uk hasn't refuted that, just saying the PC will see more benefits because PC hasn't had the benefit of low level access up until now.
I think where I would maybe disagree with that consensus is although Xbox One and PS4 give devs low level access which could give similar benefits to DX12, the devs would still have to painstakingly code it step by step, instead DX12 does all that work for the dev so we are much more likely to see devs implement it. That is what Brad Wardell has been banging on about with regards to low level access and Xbox One anyway.

"It’s not about getting close to the hardware

Every time I hear someone say “but X allows you to get close to the hardware” I want to shake them. None of this has to do with getting close to the hardware. It’s all about the cores. Getting “closer” to the hardware is relatively meaningless at this point. It’s almost as bad as those people who think we should be injecting assembly language into our source code. We’re way beyond that."

Exactly. Thank you.

and no, I haven't refuted the potential benefits to the xbox platform. It will obviously benefit.

After a long dry spell, my thirst for rumors has been temporarily quenched yet again!

All this information is from a spanish website:http://soloxboxone.com/llego-la-hora...on-directx-12/

They claim this information is from an insider developer who works for this site occasionally. This information is "official" from documents of ms to the developers like the picture you can see.(they say)

The information more relevant via google translator:

Recently, Microsoft has released a new full manual on DirectX 12 for developers where finally puts us real examples of numbers and performance.

According to the documents we have been able to access the new Direct3D API will be the heart of DirectX 12. So far nothing we did not know already, but what is interesting is how does this new API to the console and allowing up to 50% extra CPU performance and up to 20% extra GPU.

In addition, Microsoft has continued to work on the tools to work with eSRAM console so it will be a new review which will optimize even more making it much easier in certain developments 1080p standard resolution is reached.

In addition, there is more data to extract the SDK provided by ID @ Xbox game developers such as the release of part of the memory stored in the NAND Flash 8GB chip we already knew its existence. These SDK confirm what many predicted. And this memory is currently used to record clips in Game DVR and DirectX 12 may use part of it for games but can not be used for the same functions as the DDR3 memory as this is rather slow.

Although not the only information we will share with you, if we wanted to mention improved multi-engine. With DirectX 12 This can be put to work in parallel with the 3D motor, computer and copy-latency engine speeding up the creation of each frame.

hey rollins is the dx12 support a part of the new xbox experience update? and which game is supposed to utilize it fully again?

I think Fable Legends will be the first game on the xb1 to fully support Dx12.

Fable Legends looks absolutely ridiculous. Not even joking. If DX 12 is helping there keep it coming.
DX12 wasn't helping because didn't have DX12 on our Xbox yet. Future builds will probably get DX12 though.

oh i thought fable was just using the U4 engine and not dx12? humm.
It is using UE4. Not sure how that relates to DX12 though. Fable Legends might be the first game that is First Party to use DX12, according MS.

According to this article, Lionhead could be one of the first few studio that make use of DX12.

Epic Games had previously announced that its Unreal Engine 4 tools would support Microsoft's DirectX 12 API in Windows 10. The developer has released an updated version of Unreal Engine 4 that allows anyone to make DirectX 12-based games with the tools.

The new Unreal Engine 4.9 still uses DirectX 12 as an "experimental" feature. Epic Games says:

"DirectX 12 offers a much lower-level rendering API that is more efficient and allows for rendering commands to be submitted in parallel across many threads, a feature inspired by console rendering APIs. Going forward, we'll continue to improve support for DirectX 12 and look for ways to leverage the new API in upcoming versions of the engine."

Microsoft and Epic previously offered DirectX 12 support for Unreal Engine 4 to a limited number of developers, but this launch will expand that access to all game creators. Unreal Engine 4 is free to download and use to make commercial games, with Epic taking a 5% royalty on revenues. Microsoft's upcoming free-to-play game Fable Legends for Windows 10 and the Xbox One will use both Unreal Engine 4 and DirectX 12.

DRAM Expert: It Will Take Time For Games To Take Advantage of DX12, Faster DRAM Will Boost Performance

DirectX 12 is out and about but we have yet to see many games taking advantage of the same. GamingBolt had a chance to speak to Jeremy Mortenson, product manager for Crucial DRAM, a brand of Micron Technology about the same.

Mortenson stated that with regards to games taking advantage of the API on Xbox One and PC, “As with most product transitions, it will take some time for games to take full advantage of APIs new features, but the timing varies. The length of time really depends on the game developers, since they’ll be the ones to optimize for DirectX 12. Given the initial benefits talked about in the press, one would think everyone would want to get there as soon as possible.”

We also asked about Mortenson’s favourite features of Windows 10 that hold the most untapped potential. “The true benefits of DX12 in gaming performance will be something to look forward to as more games, drivers, and hardware are optimized to take advantage of the technology; in turn, giving players a better experience and improved frame rates.

“If DX12 can take advantage of and optimize for multi-adapters (a combination of discrete and integrated graphics), even with different brands, many of today’s gamers would get a boost to framerates since many have a dedicated graphics card with the integrated graphics essentially sitting idle. Faster DRAM will help integrated graphics performance, so it’ll be interesting to see what develops here and if consumers/gamers can take advantage of this benefit.”

It sounds like DX12 is getting ready to take off. Parity is on the horizon. I heard Fable Legends is going to be using it.

What he is saying on really applies to the PC, the XB1 has had some DX12 features since near launch.

Yup. More and more people are stating the improvements DX12 will have developing games on the Xbox One. If you thought the games looked awesome now...it's gonna get REAL good now.

http://www.ticgn.com/wii-u-emulator-gets-a-massive-boost-from-directx-12/

Dolphin Developers have started work implementing the latest DirectX 12 API from Microsoft after a community member showed the apparent benefits to applying the update to the emulator would do. Looking at pure framerate, the emulator saw an increase of over 50%.

Since then the community members’ revisions were implemented in the latest master build of the main emulator on PC. Interestingly enough, gamers could expect the massive performance boost on both AMD and Nvidia hardware. Requirements currently dictate that you need to have a graphics card equal or better than the Intel Discreet 4400 graphics chip and Windows 10 to see the improvements.

The Dolphin emulator on PC is a community software project that allows you to run Wii U and Gamecube games on your PC without having access to any Nintendo console. Although the software is mainly used as a gateway to the massive piracy issue on PC, it’s good to see some real world performance gains on gaming software as a whole for Windows 10.

What weird charts. 3 of the games have a decent FPS boost with DX12. But Zelda had no effect.

Wow that video was seriously huge propaganda. Reminds me of all the shady DirectX 10 vs 9 comparisons Microsoft did back in the day. I hope they don't actually expect gamers to fall for such blatant lies.
