Where is the deception? Because he left out retail? I assume retail means boxed copies? So if retail doesn't include digital, then what should the headline be? If it already exceeded a billion with retail copies, then:

Was pretty straight forward. Forza is now a billion dollar franchise. How it got there is irrelevant. It's a successful franchise and should be celebrated.
One "how" is relevant, although the OP made this clear. This is revenue derived from retail, and a free bundled game generates 0 revenue at retail, so this discludes bundles.
Bascially around 17M Forza games have sold at retail for the equivilent of $60...except some of those will be reduced or the GOTY edition, so it's higher then that. Then you add in the digital and bundles.
I'd guess the whole series is at about 32-36 million. It's bigger then gears by numbers, but that's 10 games vs 5.

Nobody would think Forza sold 1 billion copies. Even the best franchise in gaming history (maybe CoD or GTA or Super Mario) hasn't come close to 1 billion. It's like when Sega announced they sold 100 million on Dreamcast launch day. Of course it means sales dollars and not pieces of hardware.

In saying that, I'm still aching for Froz's purple headed womb ferret.
On topic, I've never been a huge racing fan since Diddy Kong racing. I got into GT3 and PGR, but as soon as things get too sim-like, I hate them. Project Cars was a hanky boring mess for me. I understand what it was doing, but I didn't find any joy in it.
Forza Horizon 3 is the first Forza I have bought new, and it was $22 AUD, and it's purely because I can drive around parts of where I grew up.
In saying that... Damn. The game looks amazing on PC. I played the demo on Xbox, and came away thinking "Yeah... I guess it looks good..." But on PC... Dayummm!!!
