Haven't played it but watched a Twitch stream for it on PC a while back and it was one of the coolest games I've ever watched. Not sure if this is the same thing, but that was basically Hunger Games where you can control dinosaurs.

Pretty much.

It took me about 58 of the 60 minutes to figure out how to do anything.

By the end of my 60 minutes, I had a decent collection of feces, stone, a hatchet, flint, wood, thatch, fiber, some berries, a stone fireplace and a few engrams.

I'll check back in on this after there is some more progress; it's playable, but has a few things that need to be ironed out before I'd be comfortable playing more, mainly UI related for my tastes.

So you do not have to pay to play?

I think the game looks super cool. I plan on getting it on PS4, though, and playing it with PSVR, but a nice early test would be nice.

You get one hour free in the preview program.

Why not get the Oculus Rift and you can use it play on PC and Xbox One?

Cause my PC sucks ass, and as far as I am aware no Oculus support has been announced for X1. I am talking about that lame game streaming thing either, but full on VR X1 experiences.

Sweeeeeeeeeet!

So it s like Elite Dangerous and you can replay that 60 minutes as often as you want?

I've no idea. It says 60 mins when you start the trail. I presume the trail is over once that expires. Just tried it out. Spawned in, gathered a few berries and some other stuff, fell off a cliff running away from a dino and died. lol

It's very VERY rough around the edges. Loads of texture popping and the screen boarder isn't sized right for me and there is no way I can see to fix it either. The UI is beyond painful as well. The idea is good but the presentation of it so far isn't winning me over.

Fair enough, though I cant see this game being nothing more than "cinema mode" on PSVR. For the best experience PC is better with Oculus which should be releasing Q1 2016.

So there is a setting called UI Threshold (I think) that adjusts the screen boarder. It only adjusts after you hit save. It doesn't do anything to move the slider. I lasted a bit longer on my second attempt. Got killed by some monster flies while out scavenging. Managed to build some tools this time as well.

Anyone know if there is something you can build like a safe or lockbox that you can store stuff in? I presume there must be at some point.

The experience will be the same across both platforms.

Even though the menu is a nightmare the game is starting to grow in me. If this game is an old built than I hope it will far more polished at the final product is released.

Yeah it's started growing on me also.

Ok I found something very very annoying. I got a character to level 9. Had my hut and storage all sorted. Was working with some others to go dino hunting. I got disconnected from the game and I have no idea what server I was playing on. Basically now that character and his level is gone. There is no menu on the server screen to show you what server you played on or what servers you have active characters on. That is a problem.

Menace in 2016

how are the visuals? surely it doesn't' look as good as the OP video? I mean, I guess its possible.

That video is pretty accurate IMO, except they aren't showing the graphical glitches.

-Framerate can go from somewhat smooth to choppy.

-There are absolutely random frame drops, where it will get kind of choppy, regardless of whether anything is going on or not. Like super noticeable heavy chugs, that are completely sporadic. It isn't a constant thing, it just randomly happens some times, which we could probably attribute to the game being pre-release build.

-The ambient occlusion is thick and wonky on some objects. It sticks out like a soar thumb in some instances, and in some glitch instances it will band together and move a tiny bit when you move the camera.

-Shadows and lighting are a bit wonky at the moment. Some weird graphical glitches can appear... for instance, I was walking up on a tree, with the sun to my back and shadow from the tree brokenly expanded and cast upwards, towards the sky as I walked forward and then went back to normal as I walked past it. Only saw this once and I didn't try to replicate.

-Resolution is either kind of on the lower side or the AA method is making the game have a haze of blurriness.

Otherwise the game looks pretty decent, some things absolutely great. Compared to the PC version though, I'm thinking a mixture of medium, some things low; which isn't a terrible thing if you seen the performance of the game on PC

It's free to check out though, but just keep in mind that this is a game that is IN DEVELOPMENT. Don't take that lightly, it's not an alpha, it's not a beta, it's simply a game being worked on.

Took it for a spin. No idea how to get around in the game so I spent my time wondering around punching trees. No idea how to get stones so I stared to starve and freeze. Fell off a cliff and screen was just dark and bloody. Couldn't see and couldn't fint the suicide button so I watched my demo drain out on the beach in a bloody bathed screen staring at the stars.

Tried to restart but no option to change characters so it kept giving me same dying caveman. Finally deleted my save from Xbox and got into a new game. Y picks up stones and berries so managed to get an axe and camp fire...although my campfire appeared as unlit wood. Game was starting to get interesting and then I got booted. My 60 min were up.

Sorry, if I must judge from this demo there wasn't enough time to say this game is a buy.

This.

So, worth the 30ish dollars? I know I have a free 60 mins, just looking to see whst everyone else thinks.

Sounds like a beta to me.

Nice observations, though. Much appreciated. I am going to download the trial tomorrow.

I think so. I played the trial first and to be honest I was very unsure at the beginning. But as I got more into it I found myself really enjoying it. It's not for the faint of heart though. You can't take your eye off your resources for a even a minute or you'll find yourself hungry, thirst, lost and with no energy to get home. It's brutally unforgiving.

Also it's lacking in presentation as has been commented on already. If that's bugging you after your free hour is up I'd maybe pass on it for a bit cos it doesn't get better.

One more thing of note, there is a bit of screen tearing in certain instances. Like, when you punch a tree, you'll get tears each time you hit it.

Definitely worth a try. I'd recommend looking up the basics before you start playing, as the game is absolutely brutal.

A few tips in spoiler, not really spoilers, but some people like to go in on their own and figure things out. I spent the majority of my demo time with trial and error (which you might prefer as well):
-jumping from high out even low placed in the beginning will hurt you character
-you can pick up stones/rocks with the Y button, there is no context stuff telling you this
-press Y to harvest plants, they yield berries and fiber, which you can eventually use to make clothes
-Don't try to knock down too many trees with your fists.. You will break a bone and bleed out eventually.
-pick up enough stones and punch just enough trees to yield enough materials to craft a hatchet. Use that hatchet from here on out to cut trees down.
-next important thing to get is flint.. Use your hatchet on big boulders you see lying around to harvest that.
-by that point, you'll probably have levelled enough to unlock a stone fire place.. Get it out clothes or freeze to death. It requires stone and flint to make.
-lock your fire place, add wood materials to the fire place inventory to get it going.. Then you activate the fire. Think Minecraft oven baking.
-The controls are so funky, read up on them
-If you die, you drop all of your loot on your character... someone else can and probably will steal your stuff if you don't respawn and get back to it in time
That's enough to make the rest of the learning process in the short 60 minute window bearable.

Nice.

Normally I would like the trial & error method, but given the limited time it seems gathering a few tips to help get started seems wise.

Those tips will help. Even with them you'll be lucky to do all that within one hour. Ultimately your first main goal should be to build a shelter and get a bed (not a sleeping bag). Once you have a shelter and bed you can use it to respawn on when you die and also use it for fast travel. It's critical.
