I did not know this about DRM

and because a person on another forum could not play a single player game on his only ps4 console today playstation is down
I am assuming its a digital copy.. that he has

Try viewing your trophies or watch videos purchased through Video Unlimited. Sony made a console that is unnecessarily limited when offline. It's their own brand of always-on DRM as I have always said.

starlight777 PSN checks every few days. I think once a week is how often is checks. So it isn't too bad. He just got unlucky and today was the day it tried to check.

Wait, Just to be clear. You mean we need verification (online but hidden) when we play digital copy of the game!

No money from me for digital game then.

At least Yoshida is honest & not playing with words.

You don't need to be online to play your digital games on your primary console. However, when you do go online it will check your licenses for all your games. Because of the issues today, when that check occurred and the licenses could not be validated, the games were locked out. Had those people never gone online or had PSN been operating as intended, this would have not happened. It sucks for sure, and I think Sony needs to change how this works, but bottom line is that this has only happened due to network failure and not some hidden DRM.

actually this happened when the Sony network was..down on Sunday.
and I have found out it happened to quite a few people
even to those who had made their ps4 their home console
they could NOT play their single player games.. period

In the wake of the DDoS attack on countless companies an odd issue prevented PS4 players from accessing even their purchased Single Player games. The issue centered around the "license" function for digital purchases.

borrowed from gaf, explains the concern very well

I'm aware others have this stipulation in them but I was looking specifically at Sony's in response of losing access to my games when the network was down due to an "invalid license."
The concern I have is what this idea of games as a license entails for the consumer in a perpetually connected world. Legally speaking Sony or anyone else with such a stipulation in their agreements are well within their rights to revoke access to the software at any time. In the past that was not a concern for physical media. As long as you have the disc and the hardware you could play the game. But when you throw online license authorization into the mix it complicates the issue. I am no longer guaranteed access to the software I purchased. My access could be revoked for not being connected to authorization servers for a certain amount of time or because a publisher loses the rights to a property utilized in the game and is thus no longer allowed to profit from a game with micro transaction in it. The door is literally wide open for "licensors" to restrict access to purchased software.

Since more than half of Sony's E3 2013 were pure improvisations at the last minute, it just had to show its seams as it goes. That said do people remember something like this happened with Xbox Ones playing KI in last year's EVO event?

Of course. The license is checked every couple of days. It would make sense a few people were caught up by it. They have always had EULAs for all of this this last generation, even for disc-based products, and last generation had the same DRM in place for digital games.

what I still get
and it makes me sad
Sony good
Microsoft bad
Give it a rest.

Playstation games do not require online checks, but yes they do occur when you do go online.

That's the best part about it. DRM has always existed and on PS consoles. The things people hate on Microsoft for doing today are things Sony has been doing since the beginning of time.

When you say Playstation games do not require online checks, are you referring to past consoles or the PS4? Because without a doubt, looking at my current PS4 right here in front of me, online checks are in fact required periodically.

Nah they do not require it, your games on your primary console will work fine if you stay offline. It only checks periodically if you do go online. That's how the problem came up. People went online, it tried to check, but failed because the network was borked and so locked out those games. If those people never went online (unplugged the cable) it wouldn't have happened.

WTF is this BS thread? The issue with MS version of DRM was it was 24 hour check ins and they never said if you could trade in your games at first and they were forever addressing that issue and never even said how they would do it other then well you can do it with MS partners.

It's not the same god damn thing. f***ing mods do your job this is just some BS bait thread filled with MS lovers tiring to feel better about their system and you know it.

s*** when live was down I could not even log into my f***ing 360 as it would keep tiring to make me sign into my profile and being as live was not working I was not even able to get into my profile so I was not able to play anything. s*** happens but doing it daily like One wanted means the s*** will happen more and that is why MS One DRM was hated and all the questions MS were not able to answer about it.

That is not true. Trust me. You are just guessing around and assuming. Because leaving it unplugged definitely doesn't stop the DRM check.

So you can just leave your PS 3/4 unplugged and still have access to your digital media?

I know when I didn't have my 360 connected for a bit when I first put it in my sons playroom all my arcade games reverted back to trial versions, it was hit and miss with DD retail games though, some were perfectly fine and some wouldn't play, same for any DLC that I had DD'd

Well where's your proof? You just started making claims when you know nothing of its validility. Why not test it out and keep your PS4 offline for a week or two before you start spreading your expertise of misinformation. Because it is, and I've had it happen multiple times to me.

Everything I have read leads me to believe that is how it works, but they have had issues lately with this and then the DDoS attacks, so some people may be affected differently. As for me personally, I went a few days without internet during my move and was able to play non-PS+ digital games fine. Sure it's possible it may require a weekly check or maybe some titles have different requirements than others, but I have seen no proof of this anywhere.

Obscene Jester Seriously try it out for yourself. The DRM is definitely still in effect even when disconnected. I usually don't bother reconnecting the Ethernet port a lot of the time when I don't have PS Plus, and I've had it happen a few times.

How can people be surprised about this? There has to be some form of DRM for digital media.

This is the internet, logic and common sense do not live here. I mean who knew digital games would have digital rights management. It is just shocking.

I'm too connected to ever have the willpower to try this myself! I'll wait for the internet to do detailed tests for me.

Weekend is here. Time to punch in I guess.

Hey now. Am I not the internet? I've had my PS4 offline since Tuesday. I'll let you know the results when they come.
