I think my Father is actually going to build a new computer!

So, that's exciting.

This guy............ He used to be so into the latest tech.

His PC is SO old, and yet he boots up with dozens of tabs opening etc. Like it takes 10 minutes for this thing to reboot.

Right. So I'm helping him out, and realized the hardest decision is the case. And I think I've convinced him on this one:

He doesn't want RGB, and he doesn't want tempered glass side panels. So the mesh version of this case seems perfect. It's not much wider and about the same depth as his current case and he want's something around that size.

Any opinions?

The rest is easy but I might have some questions.

I can't wait for him to realize how dumb he is for not getting a new computer sooner.

"Dad you know you can boot up a PC in like 11 seconds these days?"

I have the same exact case and it is the best case I've ever owned. The airflow it provides is amazing and you'll notice it with the nice cpu/gpu temps if that's a concern.

This is good to hear. I've been trying to "help" him get a new PC for years, and he can't get around to it.

Now he went out and bought a 65" OLED tv and watched some soccer in 4k, suddenly he's very interested again.

I think this is the right case for him. After that it's no problem figuring the rest out for me.

clicked the link, and I was like “woah, 149.99 for a case, that air flow must be feng shui” then I clicked the pop up, 74 bucks ain’t too bad.

What pop up? This case is $74 on US newegg?

FML :(

I just need him to buy this case and I think he's saying he's going to, once he buys a case well he has to build a new pc.

I'm doing my best here haha! I should maybe take a photo and post specs of what he's working with right now, just to show how outdated it is.

I guess it’s on sale here, it’s typically 129.99

He's doin' it!!!!!!!

I'm so excited for him. He's so like, not even sure about it. "This case is 31 Lbs! There's cases out there that PCmag suggests and they're 18 Lbs"

Oh, let just see what happens.

So Lian Li Lancool 216x is what he got. $120 loonies and twoonies.

I also can't believe he bought the CPU cooler I suggested.

Now he wants to figure out CPU and Motherboard. Ram is easy. (Gonna be Corsair PSU will probably be 850e?)

Quick question,

Samsung 990 pro 2tb is getting blown out all over the place (and starting to sell out too)

$199 canadian bucks..........

I'm telling my Dad to get this s***.

Surely whatever is next can't be all that much faster and at that price? And someone saying SSD's are expected to rise in cost next year?

Why are they selling these at such a discount? This thing is more than twice as fast as my 970evo plus 1tb which is me maxed out on my older motherboard.

Thanks for any advice here!

Is there a specific model number? I’m getting like three different kinds on Amazon

It's the Samsung 990 pro 2TB with no heatsink.

I see the one with the heatsink is now also on deep discount and $20 more, is a heatsink needed?

*edit to add below

Dang, Best Buy has them on sale for 179.99 with heat sink…not saying I bought them but their in my cart

I've checked on it on canadacomputers, amazon, bestbuy and newegg several time today.

Not only did it sell out just now almost everywhere, people are obviously re-selling them for $269.99 here in Canada on Amazon.ca, and the official aftermarket heatsink on Amazon is sold out.

So I went downstairs and told my Dad buy this thing NOW haha. He got one off Newegg.ca

So now he has a case, CPU cooler, and an incoming NVME drive, and I am both excited and jealouse about what he is going to experience.

Long ship time though, Jan 8-15th, gives him time to figure out what motherboard and CPU he wants.

RAM and power supply is easy, that can wait.

I'm kinda sad now.

I'm pretty sure within this year (I could look it up on here) I jumped on a deal on the best NVME drive my motherboard could support.

Samsung 970 evo plus 1tb.

Sequential Read:3,500 MB/s
Sequential Write:3,300 MB/s

Compare that to the specs of the drive my Dad just ordered..............

My dad was like "how fast does it need to be for what I'm doing?" and I'm like, how fast can you blink?

Dang, I’m sad with ya….I think I saw them going for like fifty bucks, maybe with the heartsink around Black Friday

Frick, I had to cancel my order, guess it updated to the new week/Monday price, when I went it check out the numbers didn’t add up and saw it went up to 204.99 :(

Yeah I was curious when I woke up today what the "sales" would look like.

A whole bunch of stuff has gone back up to MSRP..............but that won't last.

Superbowl craze coming up there will be sales again.

Perhaps my father is being wise taking his time because we're also gonna start seeing the next gen of tech coming out or being revealed at the end of the month.

Is a heatsink necessary when in a pc, or recommend?
I think you find out if you need one when you do your build and see what your overall temps are.

And the newer motherboards have 4 M.2 slots PCIe4, so you can try different spots to get the NVME drive away from heat?

Right,

So I'm thinking next step is to google "best motherboard 2024" and see what kinda info I can get from that.

ALWAYS get a heatsink. They don't cost much for the added performance and protection they provide. Heat is the enemy of all PC components.
I'm sure it's not hard to get one whether OEM or third party if it's running hot.

He still has to buy motherboard, CPU, RAM, power supply.

If it's for light gaming or browsing, you don't have to go all out 😆
Replying again:

I've given him the info he needs. But he's gonna focus on a couple of motherboards and see if they go on sale at the end of the month.

So for me I'd want to know what people feel about the reliability of Asus, ASRock, Gigabyte and MSI LGA 1700.

They all seem to go through stages of reliable, piece of crap, good again, don't do it etc etc.

I've tried through all of these mobo brands and I've never had any problems fortunately. I think Gigabyte has been most reliable for me.

Wait, I went with a mesh grill instead of the glass? Would that be a major/significant factor in keeping things cooled?

More people have gotten the glass one…

I personally hate glass sides. Always have so I'd go with the mesh provided you can keep it dust/hair/particulate free. In practice, I don't know if there is a difference between the mesh or glass temp wise.
