I'll be really interested to know people's impressions, as they start coming in on this specific feature... so I thought it deserved its own thread.

Only a couple more days... I'll have my impressions written up, ready to post as soon as I'm allowed to. :-)

To get things started, I have an Olevia 65" LCD screen, a Harman Kardon 3700, and a Comcast cable box (with DVR)... what components do you guys have?

Pffft, 3 days.. who's counting? You can post ;)

jk, but I wish you could :tounge:

Until I get my theater finished, my game room has a 65" panny plasma. I have 5.1 in the game room, but the problem is my receiver is in the equipment closet along with everything else that runs my house. So im going to have to teeter the xbox one on my mantle along with the Kinect, run hdmi out of xbox one through cat6/hdmi balun to the receiver to get the surround and back again to get the video to the TV. This is basically because of the Kinect. If I had a 40-50 foot extension to the Kinect I could put the One in the equipment room. Oh well.

After reading/watching the reviews I have decided against satellite integration. The kinetic seems like more of a negative in regards to television aspect (at the moment). I will give it a try once they've ironed out the launch teething issues.

60" Samsung
Klipsch SB-1 Soundbar
Xbox 360 (TV)

Hoping for the best (esp. with the sound bar). I do have a Harmony remote but really hoping I can do all of the primary functions using Kinect/voice control.

When you get your X1's, do yourself a favor and get X1 SmartGlass. It's SOOO much better than X360's SmartGlass...

SmartGlass combined with X1's TV and home theater integration is ridiculously awesome. I feel like my living room finally "works". It's finally functioning as it's always meant to have been, but never could... Kinect required.

You can do everything major with voice, and SmartGlass integrates incredibly well too.

It's really amazing that Kinect/voice/SmartGlass works better for my system than a $200+ universal remote system... Pretty friggin sweet.

Sounds good. Hope it works out that way in practice. The newer Harmony remotes are garbage IMO (I roll an X360 Harmony which still works great).

Do you happen to know if voice can work using the 360 as an extender? I have Comcast for cable but use a WMC PC with cablecard tuners and 2 360 as MCEs.

Thanks mang.

Hmmm... Pretty sure that's not supported, but I love that idea...

Thought as much. Don't have a problem using the remote for selecting things off the WMC DVR (don't watch much live TV). I'll be sure and test it out anyway :p

Flynn, can you still watch DVR that's on your cable box on XBox One? I don't care if I have to use me remote.

Also, is there a way to see storage capacity?

These are things I've seen in reviews and wanted more detail.

Although the UK is not supported at launch I'm going to plugin my Sky TV on day one and start watching from the console.

Yes you can, just use your remote to navigate the DVR

As the general mentioned, yep, you can use your remote jut fine for that functionality.

What's also really cool, though, once you select/start a recorded video, it's super easy to pause/play with voice... mute with voice, etc... it's all very well integrated.

I've been really excited to unify my living room, so HDMI pas through for my cable box, and Kinect IR blasting is something I've looked forward to for a very long time now. I purchased a $200+ dollar universal remote (the most advanced Harmony UR), and while you can do more with it in terms of getting every last feature and button mapped, Xbox One makes the whole experience SOOOoooo much better... I returned my Harmony remote, and haven't looked back. There's really nothing I need a remote for, when it comes to just consuming entertainment now (both videos and games)... in any case, this Monday was my first chance to play with the end-to-end setup for home theatre integration/TV integration, and I'm in complete agreement with the other reviews out there - this is the future that I've been hoping and waiting for.

NOTE: Yes, I'm a biased MS employee, and my impressions will probably be written off by many as such... but I'll be honest through and through. Additionally, while I want MS to succeed, I'd never say a product was good if it wasn't. When I had a Windows Mobile phone (pre-Windows Phone 7), it was utter garbage, and I called it as such. It does no one any good to artificially pump up bad products. It's much better for me and for the company I work for to be honest about the good and the bad, so that we can identify where we can improve, and make things better. So just know that my impressions below are honest. I want us to succeed, and I do have an obvious bias, but I'm also not going to sugar coat anything. The iPhone was a better product than our Windows Mobile devices (prior to WinPhone 7), and I called it as such. So there you go. :-) ... on with the impressions!

The setup is super quick/easy. All you need to do is tell the system who your cable provider is, who makes your cable box, and then tell it what TV and receiver you have. I did that all in about 5 minutes (if that), and then I was off. If anyone's tried the Harmony UR setup, I have great news for you - this is WAY better, WAY easier, and WAY faster.

Using voice to control my entire home theater is really an amazing feeling. The sensation I got when using voice in Netflix for the first time was pretty incredible, and this just blows that away. Finally, I can just easily issue a single voice command (Xbox On), and my entire home theatre comes to life. When it's time for bed, I can issue another simply voice command, and it'll all shut down. It just works, and I didn't have to place special IR blasters in front of my devices or anything... Kinect just saturates the whole room with the IR signals, so no matter where I put my components (provided they're still in the same room *somewhere*), it'll just work.

I honestly don't think there's much for me to add which hasn't been said in the other reviews, but it really is the subtle things which make this whole living room integration piece just feel right. My wife and I flip between Netflix, games, and cable TV frequently, so this unification is a dream for us. My wife was blown away by how quick everything was, and how easy it was for her to use.

The other thing which is really better than I expected is the SmartGlass integration. I love being able to use my phone for volume control... and my wife doesn't enjoy 'talking to the TV" as much as I do, but she LOVES using her Windows Phone to adjust volume, mute, change channels, switch experiences, etc... it really does make the absolute best universal remote control in the world. The only caveat is that obviously you can't use *every* feature via voice/SmartGlass, so you'll still need your old school remotes for specific settings adjustments, and configuration... but for the vast majority of frequent use features - voice or SmartGlass will get you what you need/want.

I haven't experimented with the custom channels in the X1 guide yet, and I haven't yet put everything through the wringer, plus I've run into a couple minor snags... for example, there were a couple times when a voice command was mis-heard, and it did the wrong thing, but it was probably literally 1 out of every 20-30 commands... and it was also less common commands.

But I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE finally having a unified living room... and that alone is *EASILY* worth the $100 premium over PS4... especially when you consider that a universal remote which in some cases doesn't even work as well can cost you upwards of $200...

Flynn : Some questions, since I won't be able to mess with this until next week

- Does the "vast majority of functions" include the ability to play back/list the items stored on my DVR? It's literally what I do 95% of the time I use my cable box.. the other 5% of the time is 4% setting up my DVR recordings, and 1% the rare times when I actually watch "live TV."

- If watching Live TV can it control the Timeshift features? Pause, rewind, ff?

- Is the "turns everything on and off" configurable? I usually turn features like that.. well.. off.. because it's rare that when I turn one device off I actually want to turn off my receiver and/or TV. Other universal remotes separate out that functionality, with individual on/off separate from system wide on/off..

- Can I use the Xbox One to switch inputs on my reciever?

Actually, maybe someone else can ask my questions (without quoting me).. pretty certain Flynn has me on ignore.

Yes, it's configurable. I *always* leave my cable box on to record things, so my Xbox One doesn't turn that off (though it COULD, if you wanted it to), but my X1 turns on/off everything else (TV, Receiver)... but (again) you can turn off/on any of that functionality. It's completely configurable.

No, you cannot. The idea is that you shouldn't have to switch inputs on your TV or your Receiver with X1, because it does everything you need...

That post is orgasmic. I can't wait to use that setup at my house as well.

That's what I expected but I'm a bit disappointed. I understand that the tech is limited in that the XBO itself would probably never be listing DVR items in a menu, but there is nothing really stopping MS from implementing the same control ability as something like a Harmony remote, that just knows what buttons exist for any given DVR out there. For Xfinity X1 they'd need to only support maybe 5 total buttons... the Xfinity button, and then left/right/up/down.

Do you not DVR yourself then?

You claimed you don't need a remote anymore.. seems a bit of an exaggeration.. and you actually "returned" your Harmony remote? How long had you owned it?

Yes, it's configurable. I *always* leave my cable box on to record things, so my Xbox One doesn't turn that off (though it COULD, if you wanted it to), but my X1 turns on/off everything else (TV, Receiver)... but (again) you can turn off/on any of that functionality. It's completely configurable.

Good to know, I figured as much was just making sure.

lol, neat idea.. but it really just sounds like they aren't attempting to be a true universal remote solution, only really supporting the commands to the DVR that the UI itself operates with. Maybe they'll expand the extra functionality into Smartglass or something.

Flynn is there any truth to the rumor the Dolby 5.1 isn't supported through Optical Out?

Don't say that. My receiver is old and optical is my best option. Ughh.

It was posted in another thread and Kotiku was the ones who mentioned it.

My old receiver does do DTS Digital. So there's hope. It still might be time to get a new receiver.

It could be true, but I don't know... I'll try to find out.

That's unfortunate and not entirely true. Many people, including myself, have multiple consoles, cable box, and in my case xbmc htpc. So there are people that need to have receiver input changes. Microsoft frustrates me with this kind of stuff. They will do cool things but not follow all the way through to make it a complete solution. They have a history of this.
