I'm an Apple head. A rational Apple head, but an Apple head nonetheless. Every two years I can't wait to get my hands on the new iPhone. If contracts weren't for two years I'd probably get a new iPhone ever year. And with a new phone comes a new iOS.
Phones may get new technology but you need an OS to take advantage of it, and with the iPhone 6 Apple released iOS 8. What's my experience been with it so far? It's been a disaster. I've loved every iOS Apple has released. They've all offered something new and I liked the graphical tweaks made, however minor they may have been. You may be asking why iOS 8 has been a disaster; well, where do you want me to start?
Restoring my iPhone 6 from a backup of my iPhone 5 was simple enough. Apple has done a great job in making that seamless and easy. Unfortunately, that's where the happy time with iOS ended. The biggest issue is the completely broken wifi bug. There are certain routers where wifi will be completely inoperable. The iPhone will randomly disconnect. It will get less than 10k a second if it is connected. Once in a while everything will work as normal. Unfortunately, that's short lived. It's not only the router in my home, but at my friends' houses as well, with multiple brands.
Apple suggested resetting network settings. Did that. Then they suggested restoring the phone from new. Did that. Twice. Now, there are no suggestions. I'm not the only one. This thread is one of many on Apple that highlight the problem. iOS 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 have come and gone and there's no fix. When you can't use your phone's data on your home network, that's a major problem. I'm on capped data, like most, and expending most of that at home isn't an optimal way to use one's data.
Memory usage on the iPad is poor. Upgrading to iOS 8 on my iPad 4 has done nothing but expand the problem. Before the upgrade I would be able to switch between two programs most of the time without reloading. Now, forget it. Switching apps reloads each app almost all the time. Safari would allow me to have two tabs open about half the time without having to reload when switching tabs. Now, forget about it. Every single tab now reloads. It's quite evident that iPhone 6 needs 2 gig of ram, minimum. Let's hope the new iPads that will be announced in a few weeks will have 2-4 gigs of ram. The memory management has gotten worse. That's something I didn't think was possible with how poor it's been.
Where my iPhone 5 was rock solid with multiple tabs open in Safari, my iPhone 6 will reload when I have two open. I sometimes get black screens when tabs reload as well. Then there is the awesome "Safari cannot open the pages..." error that's been popping up frequently as well. Those problems happen on my iPhone 6 and my iPad 4. It's frustrating.
With the plethora of problems that iOS 8 has had, luckily I waited to download iOS 8.0.1. Apple introduced a new set of bugs with that release. That release broke any, and all, cellular connectivity. People who downloaded the update had to restore their phones to iOS 8. That's a wonderfully productive way to spend an hour. With broken wifi and no cellular service, people were left without anyway to connect to the Internet using their iPhones. It happens on iPhone 5, 5s, and 6. Oh, it also broke Touch ID. It was so bad that Apple pulled it a couple hours after its release.
I'm okay with the iPhone 6 Plus bending. I think that's user error. What I'm not happy with is the disaster that iOS 8 has been for me. I can't believe a fix for the wifi issue hasn't been resolved yet. I'm really at odds how Apple could release an update that breaks phones as bad as iOS 8.0.1 did. How something like that can make it past quality control is beyond me. With all of the issues I've encountered with iOS 8, I'm left wondering what the testers are actually testing. These are major issues that should have been caught before its release.
There are other bugs as well. There are times when the keyboard doesn't disappear. I have to manually hide it. On my iPad 4 gestures will stop working. Four finger grasping won't close to the home screen sometimes. Two finger zooming in Safari will bring up the tabs rather than zooming out. There are also times when random programs will lock up and I can only home button click to get to the home screen. I have to close the program and reopen it up. This didn't happen before iOS 8. I can only imagine this is tied to the poor memory management of iOS 8.
I'm almost always an early adopter when it comes to technology. I'm fine with dealing with a few bugs here and there. With the release of the iPhone 6, a large part of me is disappointed that I was an early adopter. iOS 8 was far from ready for prime time. I feel Apple released a beta OS and will finish it somewhere around iOS 8.2. It's really that crippling for some. Apple, get it together. You've been better than this over the years. I've always laughed at the line, "Jobs wouldn't have let this happen." While I still think that's laughable, I'm left with a little part of me feeling Apple may be loosing some of its high quality control standards.
