Looking to get a Nintendo handheld

So I wanted to get my son and I a Nintendo handheld to play. There are many games I would like to play as well like RPG's and other games. Just not sure which handheld to go with. When it comes to price and library of games which is the best bet for us? I do not wanna spend a lot, but do not wanna miss out on newer great games either. Off the top of my head I know there is the new 3DS, 2DS, and DS Lite. So does the newer 3DS play all the old DS games? Any help on this thanks. Looking forward to playing one.

3DS and 3DS XL both have backwards compatibility with DS games.

Guess it would be better just to pay the extra money and go the 3DS route since I will be playing it too.

Any games anyone can recommend out of the older DS games?
