Do you think this'll turn out well?

On the upside, the focus is only on current-gen platforms; 360 and PS3 versions have been cancelled. It is a movie that would easily translate to a videogame. Also, it is coming out fairly soon (9/1).

On the downside, the release date is tied to the opening date of the movie, so it may be rushed. Also, there hasn't been much info on it since it was originally announced, way back at E3 2013, which may signal a problem. We will probably hear more at this E3.

Here's a feature that gives a decent overview of the game.

GI did a feature on it recently. Here's a brief summary of some of that info:

"Within the standard gameplay areas, food and water will remain in low supply, however somewhat contrary to the theme of the films, fuel will be largely available. This doubles-down on the idea that there will be more of a focus on vehicle combat than on-foot exploration. That doesn’t mean Avalanche hasn’t worked on the hand-to-hand portion of the game, where combat is deemed to fit the Arkham series style of attacks, counter-attacks and dodge-rolls."

"While the bulk of gameplay will take place within the game’s map, players are free to venture outside of these roughly defined borders into the area known as The Big Nothing. Here the danger to the player is extremely heightened, as there are zero sources of food or water, and enormous sandstorms are common. The reward for survival will be in the form of rare parts for Max’s vehicle, the Magnum Opus."

I'm not a fan of the movies but the game could be fun, I just need to see more.

I don't know if we know enough to say that yet. They've been working on it for a while, so maybe there's reason to hope that all that work produced something decent. Not AAA blockbuster greatness, but moderately entertaining. Perhaps. I think it's premature to draw confident conclusions. We need to see more.

Personally, I'm hoping it is one of those B-grade games that are entertaining if you accept them for what they are.

I don't know anything about Avalanche studios. I'll have to look up what they've done before...

p.s. They did Just Cause 1 and 2.

Found this also, from the official site:

Be Mad Max – Become the iconic post-apocalyptic warrior, crafting and upgrading Max’s equipment and weapons to survive by combining melee combat, gunplay and tactical techniques. Gamers must make difficult decisions as they work towards the goal of escaping The Wasteland.

Immersive Primal Wasteland – Explore the gritty, dynamic world while braving the treacherous landscapes, hostile weather patterns and deadly gangs of marauders.

Trash is Treasure - Every scrap that’s scavenged is important and can be utilized to upgrade and enhance equipment, weapons and vehicles. Gamers raid enemy encampments to gain access to valuable resources.

Survive the Open-World Landscape – Staying alive isn’t easy. Players clash with deadly factions and gangs through scores of dangerous side-missions and quests in the dynamic open world full of exploration.

Intense Vehicular Combat – Engage in dynamic inter-vehicular combat, taking down enemy vehicles with a range of powerful weapons. Car combat is entirely physics-based, so no two battles are ever the same.

Build the Ultimate War Machine – Players design, customize and upgrade their ultimate combat vehicle – the Magnum Opus – choosing from different car bodies and a slew of upgrades including mounted weapons, armor and engines to survive another day.

I don't know. Sounds like it could be fun, if it's well done. It's an open-world game, so I'm not surprised that it's taking a while.

I can see why some are drawing negative conclusions based on the less than ideal development process.

I think the concept of the game is perfect. Scarce ammo, building of your car, vehicle combat, hand to hand combat, and the ability to venture in to the big nothing which is a hard, desolate place where survival is tough going. All the cinematics seems to be of the right stuff too.

IMO, this games success will rest mainly upon how the cars handle. Will they handle like the horrible things we find in games like LA Noir, or will they be more akin to something like Motorstorm.

The hand to hand combat by description seems like it will be good enough. It follows the highly copied Batman fluid style and has finishers and what not, sounds a lot like Shadow of Mordor combat.

I think that'll be an important factor -- how the cars handle. You might be able to get a sense of that from Just Cause 2, if you played that. I think it had vehicles (I only played the demo, and from what I remember there weren't any vehicles in it).

I also think it'll depend on the quality of the story and characters. Then, there is the issue of "content" in an open-world game (i.e., sidequests). We know how challenging it is to fill an open world with interesting things to do.

Well I liked the Just Cause games, specially 2...

Yeah, I've heard good things about it -- fun factor, creating mayhem, etc. Hopefully, they will bring some of that to Mad Max. It's certainly ripe for it.

Well if Mad Max has at least the quality of Just Cause 2 the game will be really fun.

I have played just cause, but can't recall what the driving was like.

I do not think side quest matter much here. Yes, they need stuff to fill the world--and obviously I am hoping for good quests--but in a game that seems to be 80% driving, the driving mechanics are crucial. You can have the best side quests ever but if the largest aspect of gameplay is lacking then it will count for naught, but...if you have fun gameplay(driving) then the mundane quests are more enjoyable and less of an issue.

I like the Idea of Physics based vehicle combat. I remember either seeing or reading an interview where they were talking about a harpoon gun that could target and destroy specific bits on the vehicles. How cool would it be if you could pull some Crackdown 2 type tethering of two objects in the middle of a vehicle fight! If it's dynamic enough, it could be really unique.

80% driving, really? I hope not. I was hoping for more interaction with the world, more variety. Not Fallout, but not all Twisted Metal, either.

Has it been developed the whole time by Avalanche?

I dunno. MW mentioned it was "scrapped and restarted" at one point. I'm not sure if it was with a different developer before Avalanche, or whether they've had it the whole time.

Nah, not literally. I pulled that number out my ass. Just another way of saying the driving is going be what you do most of the time.

My hopes are not high.

Am looking forward to the movie though.

Ah, okay, good. I could deal with 50/50, but 80/20 would be too much for me. I realize car combat will be a big part of the game, given the movie lore -- they even refer to upgrading his car as the "backbone" of the game -- but I don't really want a game that is almost entirely focused on car combat. That would get dull. There's so much more to do, out there in the post-apocalyptic wasteland...

Car combat does sound like fun, though. I think 5 of the 10 "badass" things the GI article mentioned had to do with that.

Just FYI, the game release is not tied to the movie. The movie is out may 15th or 19th and the game isn't out til sept. 1st... I don't think it's based on the movie or retells any of the prior film's stories or anything. It's a self contained story from what I've gathered... Once I heard the melee combat was inspired by the Arkham games I became interested, and if they can nail car combat and make that feel really exciting, it could be a pretty fun game, so... fingers crossed....

Oh, okay, that's what I heard from Gamespot a few days ago. I just assumed it was correct. Maybe not.

Yeah, same here. I'm just hoping for a B-grade game, worth picking up at a discount.
