Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, HiFi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

Because it calls into question what exactly do studios under MS need to do to stay solvent. Jez pointedly asked a little over 12 months ago what was the metric for success for an xbox game, specifically Hi-Fi Rush. And Greenburg responds that for them and the players, it hit every key measurement and expectation. If that's the case why shut down a studio that met your measurements and expectations? Their words aren't matching their actions.
Just because something is successful doesn't mean it is worth keeping. Just ask Playstation.

The email literally tells the why. They want to focus on bigger games. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody. Getting more Fallout and ES out is far more lucrative than a little Indy game being successful.

I don't think they're cooked, but the public perception of Xbox is dropping, fast. Hardware numbers are lackadaisical, while software is good to average. Gamepass numbers look to have plateaued and 3rd parties still are skipping releases on your platform both physically and digitally without too much impunity to their bottom line.

I'm not Dooming and Gloming, but look where we are at. It wouldn't surprise me if the Series S/X doesn't out sell the Xbox One and that's saying ALOT.

Thinking about Ninja Theory right now who are probably in the same position as Tango Games.

You being an XBox owner this news probably keeps you up at night.

I am devastated. I already downloaded hifi rush so hopefully it stays active at least.

I am guessing this means Evil Within 3 is cancelled or moved to another studio?

Didn't everyone say that Arkane Austin would've probably been shut down after the release of Redfall without MS acquiring them? I don't think that one should be a shock.

Tango is confusing though. I thought everyone assumed HiFi Rush II was coming at some point.

If Xbox's plan is to focus on BIG releases, I'd wager Ninja Theory, Double Fine, Compulsion Studios, and Undead Labs are all in the crosshairs potentially.

Would hope all those studios are able to become independent again if faced with closure.
DF have yet to release a game under MS as P2 was already well into development.

Ghostwire tanked, nobody know what Hero Dice is. Not sure they are even profitable.

I don't think Undead Labs is in any danger. They're actually a huge studio and the word is that State of Decay 3 is moving up to AAA.

When was it ever announced?

It wasn't. But there was an Easter egg in hifi rush that seemingly teased it

I definitely get the backlash for closing these studios, but not for focusing more on AAA games. Isn't that what people have been clamoring for?

None of them should be.

It is funny. All I have seen for the last 6 to 12 months is people crying for more Fallout, more Elder Scrolls. Going by the email that is what this restructure is for. To focus on Bethesda's biger, more impactful titles.

but Xbox will get crucified for it.

I always assumed the Greenberg comment on HiFi Rush was just him BSing as usual but would have assumed it did ok at least. They should be investing in a studio that puts out a game that acclaimed.

We were told gamepass would be a place where these games would thrive
