MS bringing Gamepass to The Switch? (and perhaps other consoles?)

Anaconda, which is apparently their new X, is a fine direction to have along with an entry level model which takes them another 10 years out. They are clearly more committed to hardware long term which is a good thing. We know Sony and MS want to stream games and focus on getting more service revenue but they will continue to have hardware consoles for the foreseeable future.
Nobody said they wouldn't.

Sony and MS are not taking the same approach.

I don’t hear as much on the Sony side but even though all signs point to them taking a similar long term approach based on who they’ve been hiring, sounds like Sony will lean hard on being the only option if you want a traditional powerful console next gen. Just like Sony leaned hard into physical media in 2013. They will emphasize games running only on PS5 (not PC and not PS4). Point out that PS5 games won’t make any compromises by trying to work on other platforms and all development will be to maximize the power of the PS5 (which just like in 2013, will be a backhand to Microsoft by emphasizing the advantages of their strategy).

Like 2013, sounds like Sony will attempt to turn Microsoft’s divergence from traditional consoles into a weakness and exploit the ish out of it.

Even now, Xbox community has people breaking off based on the Nintendo rumors...and these are only rumors that even if true won’t go into effect for a bit. It’ll be really damned interesting to see if Microsoft’s can finally communicate to consumers.

From what we are seeing, Sony is going to focus on putting their games on as many devices as possible via the cloud. They are already the first and only console company streaming AAA games on multiple platforms. They bought that streaming company for the purpose of doing just that. In fact the new CEO Jim Ryan said his focus is PSN. They want services, streaming and multiple devices. Like MS, and they both want the console space. And Phil said he wants the strongest console again next gen.

Looks like they are all on the same page.

I want nothing to do with streaming though.

Like I said, I’m not in the loop but someone was rumoring they were going to pull back on that until their infrastructure was better. Not try to go head to head with Microsoft in that area in 2020. Instead focus on the core console gamer at launch and get into the other stuff when they had the infrastructure to compete.

To stream properly, it takes a lot of money. Microsoft’s Azure datacenters are 2 billion each. They’re in over 50 regions with about 2 datacenters per region. Sony purchased Gaikai in 2012 for about 1/2 a billion. Can’t imagine it has the reach or capabilities to cover their base yet.

Seeing as how Nintendo has none of that infrastructure, it makes sense why they’d look for a parter in this area.

Well it looks like they are going forward with it. They already do it as well.

They have a terrible PSnow service that rapes Gamepass.
Still not the main thing Sony will do at launch at least with PS5.
Makes sense. PS Now has been out much longer and PS has nearly double the consoles. According to Sony they are going in a direction that differs from your opinion.

1. Sony doesn't have the infrastructure for it. Only way Sony can pull this off is by partnering with one of the big boys, Google or Apple.

2. It is far more likely that Jim Ryan's PSN focus has more to do with Sony's other entertainment mediums.

3. The funny thing is that streaming is far more suited to Sony's mostly singleplayer experience software lineup than Microsoft's almost exclusive online experiences lineup.

I am only going by what Sony is doing. Sounds like they must be growing their cloud space. One of the reasons they bought an online game streaming company and are growing it. Sony is ahead of the game here.

Jim Ryan's focus (and Sony's) is PSN, including streaming console quality games to all devices as well as entertainment medium. And I agree with your 3, which is probably why Sony is investing in it.

Sony is doing the streaming thing long term. They’re not ready to compete with Microsoft or Google head on in the streaming space today. Sony controls the narrative and making next gen about streaming would be highlighting a weakness. If they aren’t putting new games on PS Now, service only has value in its walled garden as an add on once people get there. No reason to help Microsoft by making next gen about subscription services or streaming. Message from Sony is that stuff don’t matter...but if you’re interested, we had it before they did. Not going to highlight details.

Sony execs have barely talked in the past few months and Internet is dominated with former Xbox fans doubling their clicks by saying they’re leaving for PlayStation over Xbox to Switch news. Another Microsoft f up with messaging. They have internal people constantly leaking and sabotaging their gaming division. Been like that since Myerson took over in 2006. Thought since he left, Microsoft was going to change. Fact there’s still intentionally ill timed leaks shows Microsoft still has in-fighting about gaming. Leaks don’t happen when all top people are pulling in the same direction. Organizations with leaks have infighting at or near the top.

I don’t think the leaks are on MS side, more like the leaks came from within the studios they plan to purchase...last year no one expected five studios at E3, granted Playground was an obvious one

For all we know that all could have been controlled leaks

I’m disappointed the rumors aren’t true but it’s also a good thing that it dispels any chance there’s been leaks. Means they’re still running a tight ship. Doesn’t give credence that they can’t control their messaging.
