Nintendo: 4K market is "too limited"

See gaf is part of the problem here. It's a gaming forum. Now spend time at avsforums and the amount of people that enjoy the difference is lopsided to the majority.

It's lopsided at GAF, too. But no, I've got enough nerd forums in my life already, thanks. I suspect an a-v specialist forum would put me to sleep.

Nobody can use the money excuse for 4K TV's as they can be had for cheaper than 1080p sets last gen.

Says the guy who spent 8K on his TV.

Of course people can use money as a reason not to buy things. That is the most common reason not to buy things.

You can get a bigger and better(some with FALD) 4K TV for cheaper than you could get a soso smaller 1080p last gen.
Is my point...what I spent is my decision but I also got a decent lower priced($550?) Hisense 55inch(with FALD) for my son and its great and cheaper than say the 55inch 1080p Vizio with FALD I got last gen which was around $2200

I know, but you're assuming people have already made the decision to buy a new TV.

Many people are not looking to buy a new TV. They are fine with their current TV and don't see a need to spend the money to replace it with a new one.

Huh? People are always looking to buy new TV's.
I see less saying well Andy I'm just going to wait till she don't work anymore and I'll buy a new one.
Things are different these days and I'd be willing to bet that next to console sales Black Friday...TV's are in the top sought after products. We also have SB Sunday deals where you guessed it...people are buying a new TV for the big game.

Come on Val. "People are always looking to buy new cars," too, but that doesn't mean that, this year and the next, most people will be in the market for a new car. They're fine with their current one for the time being.

I see less saying well Andy I'm just going to wait till she don't work anymore and I'll buy a new one.
I've read that sentence six times, and I still don't understand it.

TV's are always a top seller and certain times of the year they are even hotter if a person needed one or not.
I was giving you a example of a typical convo and used your name lol

I say most who haven't got a 4K set are looking to upgrade to 4K and at the least are meditating on it.

I think a lot of people could care less, to be honest. I think we inhabit hardcore gaming forums where this stuff gets talked about constantly, and we get a skewed perspective on how important this issue is to most people.

Ok, I get it now. I read "she" as meaning "wife." I couldn't understand why someone would wait until their wife was unemployed before buying a new TV. It took me a while, but eventually I realized that "she" didn't refer to a person, but to a TV. I guess I don't have that kind of relationship with my TV, so it didn't occur to me.

These forums don't matter...In retail 4K TV's are a big thing, you can even go to grocery stores and buy em now.

If your point is that there are a lot of 4K TVs on the market, I agree. Doesn't change the fact that a lot of people don't feel like going out and spending the money to upgrade their TVs.

As the years roll by, the adoption rate (currently at 20% or so, I believe) will gradually increase. But it's going to be years before it replaces 1080p as the norm.

Nintendo is once again ignorant. You are supposed stay ahead of the times, not behind.

It will be years where 4K content will be the norm but the TV's are getting into homes fast and quality 1080p TV's are no longer made.

Absolutely. And consoles are supposed to be futureproofed to last for almost a decent against the rise of new technologies. And yet Nintendo still has online services in 2017 that can't even compete with the 2001 original Xbox. Nintendo is great, but they are their own worst enemy and ours.

Nintendo made the right choice for them. I applaud their conviction.

Just when you count them out, they rebound like a mofo. They basically took a failed console and repackaged it in a sexier and more practical way.

Only people I know that aren't particularly impressed are the ones when they didn't view content with HDR. Nobody I know that actually purchased one. I was the same. I wasn't particularly impressed with 4k. Once I saw HDR, yeah, different story.

Exactamundo.

Yeah, Nintendo has always succeeded by doing things differently than the other two, not chasing the same market. I don't want all three companies running in the same direction. That's too uniform. I like the eccentricity and variety that Nintendo brings. They definitely follow their own lights ... granted, sometimes that is off a cliff, but not this time. Switch looks like a hit. Hard to argue with success. They've even got me considering buying one, and I have never owned a Nintendo console.

I don't really know you. But just based on your gaming tendencies, I think it would be a great secondary console for you.

I love mine. Just need Dat Mario.

Thanks, I respect your opinion. I think you know my gaming tastes well enough. And I think you're right. If I got a secondary console, Switch would be a good choice. I'm also considering VR, but that's a different subject. Nintendo seems to specialize in simple, fun, friendly, accessible, gaming, which I'm gravitating toward lately. I know I'd like Zelda and Mario Kart, probably a couple others as well. My issue is that I have more than enough games to play on my PS4 already, so I'm not sure I need a second console at this point. Still, I'm tempted. I'll probably wait a while, see how the software library develops.

That kind of reminds me of how people said that Wii was a repackaged Game Cube. Interestingly, neither of the earlier versions sold as well as their later incarnations.

Most will say Nintendo is behind the times and all that but Reggie is absolutely right. Really couldn't care less about 4K at this point myself. Seems like HD just really hit it's stride, so what's the rush? I only want it because it's here and i feel the need to have the best. If it wasn't being pushed i wouldn't give it a second thought.

In the next 2-3 years, yeah. Right now, just give me the games. No reason to force tech on consumers who aren't ready for it. It baffles me that Sony bothered with the PS4 Pro. Makes sense for Microsoft to release more hardware because they need to at least get their games running at a consistent 1080p.
