Older Gamers

some old age quotes

Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. ~Samuel Ullman
............................
You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair. ~Douglas MacArthur
.....................................
Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional. ~Chili Davis
You're only as old as your heart is.

I was a member of a group called League of Amateur Gamers (LAG) for a while. There was an older gamers there -- I forget his name -- who posted pictures of his colonoscopy. That was ... memorable.

I hope this is right:

I'd seen a documentary a few years ago on TV saying that in twenty years time civilization will have discovered immortality.

Could you really live forever though and not get bored?

Yes. The problem is earth is not going to last forever, and the way it's going now it looks like it's going to be wayy less than forever before it dies.

I think the term "older gamer" refers to middle aged gamers (late 30's - early 40's) of which I am. I still love gaming more than any other form of entertainment. Even after 35+ years of gaming I still manage to get in at least an hour nearly every day. The day I can no longer play games is the day I start looking into countries where assisted suicide is legal.

Okay, maybe not that far, I'll still watch youtube and streams but I'll be one seriously depressed individual.

That's why planetary biospheres evolve engineer species to spread it's seed to new worlds under distant stars.

I remember hearing the same thing 20 years ago.

Gaming started in the late 1970's and isn't the average gamer age in the late 30's? So when we say older are we talking 60's, 70's?

The thread is referencing senior citizen gamers. When I think of "older gamers," though, I'm thinking of someone above average age for a gamer, whatever that is (37?).

The average age of gamers is the same as the average age for patrons of any other entertainment medium--or the average age of the general population for that matter.

Which is what? 37? edit: yeah, looked it up. Median is 37. Varies a couple years by gender.

But that's the average age. Older to me would be someone in their late fifties, early sixties. Meh, age shouldn't be relevant, gamers are gamers regardless of age IMO.
Unless they're 12 year olds screaming into their mics in COD. Then they're just annoying.

Ha, well, just a lucky guess, really, based on the average age of gamers (I'd heard it was 37). And it bears out what you said -- that the average age of gamers is the average age of people. That's interesting. We think of gamers (or I do, anyhow) as some kind of special population. But actually, they are probably very similar to the general population on most factors.

Hardcore gamers and forum-goers, that's something different...

Oh my. That's getting us into the definition game, again. Forgive me for opening up yet another can of worms, but--what exactly is a "hardcore" gamer?o_O

First line of post one is "A thread for us old folks".

Didn't realize we here at The Union had so many senior citizen gamers that they needed their own thread.

I think starlight was giving us a couple stories to remind us that you're never too old to pick up a controller. I don't think we actually have anyone over 65 here. With the aging boomer population, though, gamers over 65 will be increasingly common.

Interesting to think about what gaming might be like, 20 years from now. Here's what it was like 20 years ago:

If it follows the same path as fashion then we probably will be playing those types of games again but in all honesty it kinda feels like we have gone back in time already, to an extent at least, with all the mobile and tablet games littering the market these days (minus the gameplay value mind you).
