West Boca Raton man proudly flies KKK, confederate flags
Mr. Hayes says he's entitled to fly flags, sign welcoming members despite neighbor's concerns.

A west Boca Raton man is making no apologies for flying a Ku Klux Klan flag and confederate flag outside his mobile home.

"As many people know, the white families are producing less children because the father and mother work and you have interracial marriages and gay marriages, so there are less and less white children being born every day," the man, who would only identify himself as Mr. Hayes, told Local 10's Roger Lohse. "So we're against that."

Hayes said he started flying the KKK flag a couple weeks ago and posted a sign seeking new members. He claims so far the response has been positive.

"Don't get anybody throwing bottles on my lawn or anything like that," Hayes said. "They toot their horn. They stop. They wave. They take pictures."

Hayes said he moved to Florida from New York four years ago, yet this Yankee also flies a confederate flag.

Despite the noose hanging in his front yard, Hayes said he does not condone violence.

"We don't go around committing hate crimes," Hayes said. "We don't beat up on f****** or black people or burn crosses or any of that nonsense."

But at least one of his neighbors doesn't think that way.

"It's scary," Margaret Martin said.

Martin, who lives directly across the street, said she can't help but feel threatened. That's because she is the only black person in the neighborhood.

"I'm not trying to stereotype that, but we all know what KKK means," she said.

Hayes said he understands how people might feel threatened, but he doesn't seem to mind.

"Hey, nobody stops the Puerto Ricans from flying their Puerto Rican flag or the Jews from having their yarmulke or whatever it is in the holidays," Hayes said. "I mean, everybody is entitled to do what they want to do. That's what this country is all about -- freedom of speech."

Judging by how this guy speaks I'm assuming he's HIGHLY educated. I'm talking 10+ years of schooling; probably a doctor or lawyer.

He's betterer educated than me, I'd didn't even know the KKK had a flag.

lol.

I live down south, and you see confederate flags here and there -- backs of pickup trucks, out in rural areas. They aren't necessarily racist, although I know that is people's (and mine) first association. For some people, it just represents southern heritage, a history they are proud of. I don't like it, but I don't automatically assume it's racist anymore.

The KKK flag, however... I think I will go ahead and assume that's racist.

I'm with Dr. Love; I didn't even know they had a flag. I knew they had those neat little costumes.

I kinda like the confederate flag but only because of the General Lee!
In games, when I can, I make all my cars orange

Yeah, I don't think they're all racist....but they are very ignorant.

The confederate flag doesn't represent southern heritage. That's like saying the
swastika represents german heritage. I know that's not what you're saying, and I get it...that's what a lot of stupid southerners thinks, and that's why I say they're very ignorant.

I wish these idiots would get a clue and learn them some history, and understand that the flag doesn't represent southern culture.

I wouldn't be very happy if I were the neighbors. But hey, what can you do, he's right. He has a right to wave whatever flag he wants.

Unless the neighbors can figure out a way to push him out of the neighborhood.

Well, I think it does represent a part of their history, so "southern heritage" in that sense. Some old-timers still hold on to the civil war days as a source of pride, especially within families. They had relatives (grandparents, great grandparents) who fought or died in the Civil War. You didn't have to be a foulmouth racist to fight on the side of the South, btw -- you just had to have been born in the south. If you've ever been down here (you've lived in GA, right?), you must have seen the civil war era architecture, the antibellum mansions, the very tangible sense of connection to the civil war era, in some parts of the country. For most "yankees," the Civil War south is a huge source of contempt and scorn, but for some southerners, it's part of their heritage, and they have a pride about it. The flag is a part of that. It was the symbol of that country and that era.

Like I said, I don't see it that way myself -- when I see the confederate flag, the first word that comes to mind is "redneck" followed by "racism" -- but I've talked and listened to enough traditional southerners to know they see it differently. I don't think they're being ignorant of history. I think they just have a different personal/family history and a different view of history than we do.

He's asking for it, flying a KKK flag. I expect that there will be some retaliation against that, eventually.

It represents their tratorous history, but not "southern". Southern is american, and the flag only represented them during a brief period of rebellion.

The flag in of itself is just a flag, and that's why I used the dreaded symbol the nazi's used as an example. The swastika is no more german as the confederate flag is "southern".

Well, okay, Qbert.

Just saying, in the grand southern history, that flag was only used officially, for what, about 4 years or so?
There were only three flag designs adopted, with later, minor variants made to those designs, that served as the official national flags of the Confederate States of America and used during its existence from 1861 to 1865.

That's not southern "heritage" there. It just represents those rogue states that decided to rebel against their country.

Like I said, I don't think everyone rocking the flag is a racist, but I think they are a bit ignorant to what it truly represents and during what period. I know many southerners like to claim that it just represents their history or heritage, but it really doesn't.

Okie doke. I'll just say I see it differently, based on the people I've listened to, and that those were four very important years for some people, years in which family members fought and died under that flag, and that the history behind the confederacy has roots going way back and extending far forward, beyond the years of the war itself.

But let's agree to disagree. I don't think we're going to have a meeting of the minds on this one.

I think the funny thing is that he's just now deciding to break this thing out. I wonder what pushed him over the edge. Lack of attention would be my guess.

Could care less about the confederate flag but whats up with the F'ing Noose ?
I'm pretty sure that noose in context to the KKK symbolizes murdering black people.

I'd love to live next door to this guy, i think we'd become great friends.

As many people know, the white families are producing less children because the father and mother work

besides the whole mobile home part, that had to be the best line in the story.....

I dunno if its the best. There are some classic lines in there.

Is any pictures of this guy with this flags? I think a new meme is needed here.

It hardly stands out as a beacon of tolerance and free thinking.

A f*cking noose and a KKK flag. WTF man?! There's only one thing your going to put in peoples' minds when they see that.

It's come to represent southern heritage, ancient history aside. Like telling a homosexual they aren't gay cause gay just means happy.

I don't agree. I live in the south, and very very few people see the flag as representing their southern heritage. The southern heritage had it's start way before that flag, and continued well after the war without that flag.

That's why I used the swastika as an example. It really is no different.
Or, we could say that the swastika represents german history...I mean, it's the same.

The south has a long history, and that flag was just used a brief moment in time. The flag doesn't represent the south, it represents the south's sovereignty.

Ive lived in the south most of my life and disagree.

Edit: Humor me by Googling "Southern heritage symbols" and go to images. Let me know what pops up. :p
