PS4 update 2.0, 10/28

Here's some more info, in case (like me) you weren't familiar with this update:

--- begin quote ---

Among the highlights are YouTube sharing, Share Play (allowing a remote PS4 owner to play games with you as if they were in the room), themes, and a USB music player that effectively enables custom soundtracks.

Share Play: put simply, it allows you to play local multiplayer games with a friend who is not physically with you. This works in two different ways. In one case, you can (virtually) hand off your controller to a friend as if you were both sitting in the same room, presumably so you could take turns with a single-player game. In the other case, you can invite someone to play a game's local multiplayer with you--again, without actually being in the same physical location. The company says to think of Share Play as a "virtual couch" allowing for "an online local co-op experience" that doesn't require your friend to own the game in question.

YouTube sharing: a way to upload saved videos directly to YouTube (rather than just Facebook).

Colors/Themes: You can change the background from blue to gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, or gray.

As far as themes go, there are some possibilities shown here:

USB music player: allows you to play your own music in the background while playing a game. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.

Misc: Other additions include improvements to the dashboard and Library, voice commands, and live broadcasting.

---- end ----

get back to me when I can plug in a flash drive with videos and music on it to play on it like I could on a PS3 or allow me to stream media from my PC or laptop thanks.

yay. updates and stuff. the direct-to-youtube is a good one, previously i had to copy my files from ps4 to a stick (which takes bloody ages by the way -- like an hour for a 15minute file, no idea why its so slow compared to other devices) to pc, which was a hassle. still holding out for things like pause downloads and appear offline though.

the music player will overlay with the game audio, right?

I'm not sure. They talk about "custom soundtracks," so presumably, it will replace the game music. If it doesn't, I suppose you could just turn the game music all the way down (assuming there's an option for that).

That's pretty cool. You can play a game without owning it. I'm kind of surprised the publishers didn't put up a fuss. I suppose they think it's good marketing for their game, to have friends introduce it to you.

Share Play looking good!

"So, regarding the timer, is that a one time feature per game?
So, say for example, I own Infamous: Second Son. Does he/she (my friend on their own console) only get that 1 hour to try the game? Or are we able to restart the sharing again and again?"

"No limits on the amount of Share Play sessions, just on the total time per session (60 minutes)."

Yeah, that is awesome. Just hope the servers can take it.

Looking sweet.

We don't get that many updates on the PS4 as we do on the XB1, so some nice changes coming is welcomed.

It's P2P, it doesn't go through PSN, it's really just remote play but on your PS4. Hitting your console then sending the stream through PSN servers then the receiving player would be a very bad idea, unless even more latency and higher ping is the intended effect.

Just read that it's 720p/30 only as well probably to decrease lag latencies.

pause downloads is in. next-gen starts here!

I'm not f***ing around that is a great thing to me. I was without net for two weeks after I moved and was using my smart hpone as a hot spot I had to uninstall a game cause it wanted to do a huge update and if you cancel the update it just tries again when it does a check.

god damn guess it won't work for me with a s***ty 2.5 Mbps upload.

That's a decent update. Share play sounds really interesting.

Oh, I misunderstood. I thought it was through PSN and available to any friend, anywhere on the network. But you're saying it's just remote play -- so limited to just friends in your house.

That actually makes more sense. I couldn't believe that, from a business perspective, they were going to allow anyone on a friends list to play a game, without paying anything.

Nah it's actually like you imagined. It's not restricted to your household. but what ketto meant was that it's p2p. As in your ps4 streams directly from you to your friend and not through psn.

I just tried it for a bit with a friend ( not in my household) We played some diablo 3 (which I own) then some nba 2k. I made him play destiny and Infamous. Picture quality ain't all that but it plays pretty decent for the most part. Neat little feature if you wanna show a game off to a friend and let them try it out.

There has to be some connection to PSN in some form or manner. You are required to have PSN, and in some cases (unless you are just viewing), PSN+ is required by one or both. It's also in the PSN party menu.
