Resolution question

I think we need to clear up the confusion with a simple diagram.

Spider webs I tell ya!

I have both consoles and some games for both. Like NBA 2k15, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and GTA V. I feel like they both look the same to the naked eye but NBA 2k15 and Ghosts looked more colorful on the X1. I guess they are more crisp in terms of graphics on the PS4 but it's all the same to me.

In a perfect world I would own both a PS4 and X1. I'd buy third party titles on PS4 and save the X1 for exclusives.

In a perfect world...

This.

I have both but tbh I play the "few" multiplat games I'm interested in on the ps4. I haven't really played my xbox one since I bought it and beat Ryse. I've played a few random ki matches since then but that's it. Halo 4 and 5 are probably going to be the next games I play on xb1.

According to this calculator i sit 11.4829 feet from my screen, which in meters is 3.5 meters. 50 inch tv.

Why not just buy a ps4? It isn't like it is a huge investment and you will have even more games available to play

I found this online calculator that tells you what distance to sit at from your TV, for the best resolution. I don't keep up with all the resolution stuff, so I have no idea if this is accurate, but they sound more knowledgeable than me, that's for sure.

Use that sliding tab to select the size of your TV, and it'll give you the best distance.

55 inch TV = 8 feet. Interesting. I'm sitting about 3 feet too far away.

"The chart also shows that 4K Ultra HD resolution is not worth it if you are sitting more than 6' away and have a 50" TV. Your eye won't be able to tell the difference."

Never agreed with such charts.
For reference I sit about 6.5-7 feet from my 65 inch 4K and before that I sat the same distance from my 55 inch 1080p and before that my 52 inch 1080p. I more then notice differences with 480p DVD's,720p,1080i comcrap cable,1080p,2K,3K and 4K.

How close do you need to sit, to see the difference? I'm sitting about 10 feet from my TV.

I game on my desk, so I notice every single little detail that gamers sitting from a distance miss on tv, so yeah, for some, it makes a difference.

Funny how your viewing distance is with in 1 foot for optimal viewing for all you screen sizes and resolution  Remember , this is just optimal, meaning the absolute best you can possibly get. A foot one way or the other will not have a huge impact on picture quality. It is simply a guide. Ultimately it will be up to the individual to decide how far away is right for their particular TV.

That's because I go by what I see and not to brag but I am pretty good at getting the most out of my toys.

Because of many reasons. I bought the Xbox One because all my friends did to and we are on Xbox Live daily, talking, gaming. They live quite far away from me, so this is great. I also prefer Xbox more in terms of how online features is being handled, the controller. When i went for the Xbox One, i was aware of the slightly lower resolution in several multiplats, although, not all. :)

I was just very curious about this all. Cause it's being made into such a big deal.

Quite interesting indeed. And to think not so long ago my couch was even further away from the screen, like 4 or even 4.5 meters away from the 50 inch tv. Nah, i tried sitting closer than 3.4 and i really start to notice ugly things in the graphics in games.

Just to give you a sense. The best way to see the difference is to look at the floor beside Batman.

It depends on:
*Your eyesight
*How big your TV is
*How far away you're sitting from it

I can notice the difference between 1080p and 900p. 900p looks a bit softer to me but that's it. I don't find it highly noticeable at all.

900p vs. 720p is a bigger difference for me (much bigger to be honest). The lower a resolution is, the bigger the pixels are. While there's a bigger gap in number of pixels for 1080p vs. 900p, 720p's pixel size is so large that the difference between it and 900p looks far more noticeable to me than 900p vs. 1080p. Seems like many who get into these "resolution wars" don't realize that. They simply argue based on number of pixels without factoring in the size of those pixels.

Anyway, just be happy that your console is a huge step from last gen. I really don't understand how this has become such a big issue this gen when so many people (the majority) were fine with playing on the PS2 during its gen. Most of the people who call others "stupid" for knowingly buying the weaker console don't realize that they are being hypocritical. I got banned from another forum for a month for asking somebody who felt this way if they purchased a PS2 after 2001 (this is apparently worse than calling other posters childish names all the time lol).

Apparently a mod considered it "disingenuous" because the PS2 came out earlier than the Xbox and GameCube which still doesn't/shouldn't matter considering the fact that the majority of PS2 sales came AFTER those two consoles were released. First time that I've even been banned. I'm also saying this as someone who GREATLY preferred the PS2 over the Xbox and GameCube due to its gaming library (more exclusives that interested me). People get really silly when they don't want to admit their hypocrisy (haha).

I was able to tell the difference between all of those, I scrolled down below where it said what res it was and was guessing it correct every time.

I sit about 5 feet away from my 50", so most things are apparent. TBH though, the only thing that really bothers me is screen tearing, that I just can't put up with.

It is a big deal to some simply because it is different on some games and helps fuel the console wars. If framerates on games between platforms were noticeably different, that would be the thing people key on.

I can see those differences in the pic menace posted, but I have to pay attention. It doesn't leap right out at you.

I moved my couch three feet closer, based on the info in the thread. Now it sits in the middle of my living room, which is kind of odd, in terms of the layout. I don't know if I'll keep it there or not. I do get a much better picture, but I don't know how important it is. I've been watching "Cheers" reruns on Netflix lately, which are probably 200p, lol.

Exactly. You can see them, but there isn't some huge chasm between 900P & 1080P. Plus, in terms of the current consoles, we have to remember the pic gets upscaled as well. That will diminish differences further.

lol, you might need to build an extension to get the most of that low resolution

Hahaha that reminds me of my own situation. If i put the AV furniture with TV on it completely against the wall, it's just way too far for me. Cause my couch is all the way agains the wall opposite of it. So i moved the TV furniture much closer. Too far away....i dunno..it breaks the immersion for starters and it makes the tv look....small even.

YES
A big screen loses that big screen feel when you sit to far back.

Yeah, it's pretty close, it certainly isn't a major difference....just like last gen.

The minor differences are just fodder for arguments.

In most situations and in most scenarios, people literally can't even tell the difference between 900p and 1080p.

In ideal setups which expose the gap in its absolute worst light, it's noticeable but not meaningful.

In all cases, it doesn't impact the experience anymore than an unnoticeable frame drop bothers the person who *knows* that a frame dropped because Digital Foundry said so. Any 'bother' or 'issue' stems from a psychological one, not one in reality.

Ironically my friend, you just proved Digital Foundry is a necessary evil. Without them, there would be no console wars, which ultimately lead to no purpose for forums like these, sadly ending with all of us finding out that TD, KETTO AND VAL, are all the same person. That would scar me for life....

Do you think Microsoft will take hardware seriously next gen? I'm starting to wonder what the odds are that we will have a repeat of this generation from both Microsoft and Sony.

Do you think gamers will get serious about caring about games? I'm starting to wonder if all they care about is who's GPU-dick is bigger.

Now I know my eyes are superior to Flynn's. Or I'm not lost on Denial River.

Highly possible. Two thirds of people have worse-than 20/20 vision (including me), but that just further proves my point.

Most people don't see perfectly, and moat setups aren't optimal for resolution gap identification.

If it was only about games and nothing else at all matters then why buy an xbox one in the first 2 years? Almost every game is on ps3 and 360. Why should I even buy the next xbox in the first 2 years? Its not like this year and a half have been full of great exclusives. God forbid someone wants AAA hardware for AAA games!
