Revisiting the Xbox One Reveal

That's true, a lot of it was about presentation or marketing, and these consoles, in the end, are more alike that different. Otoh, there were some significant differences, apart from the presentation/pitch itself -- e.g., policies affecting used games, mandatory online check- ins, mandatory Kinect, hardware differences, and $100 price difference.

The price difference was so inconceivable that I totally forgot that the the X1 was $100 more for awhile. Lol

Also, I don't mean to downplay Sony's execution. Not only did they have an answer for every Microsoft flub up. They also corrected a lot of their own practices that were heavily criticized.

-If price was such a huge factor, why did X1 sales not improve significantly after the price cut? All the "gamer unfriendly" policies are long gone, and the price is lower than PS4, yet Sony still dominates sales.

Games matter during the months outside of the Fall/Holiday season. The people who are buying consoles during the early months of the year don't really care much about price since if they did, they would wait until the Holiday season. Xbox One sales would be in a different state if it had something like Titanfall during the early part of this year. The Xbox One was only available for $500 last year and yet it did better in March 2014 than it did in March 2015 because of Titanfall. It seems like the Xbox One will improve in terms of this next year with Quantum Break coming out in early 2016.

Microsoft's price raise in January was stupid too. They lost January by about 40K if I remember correctly -- they could have won that month if they didn't raise the price and hurt momentum. People who worked in retail stated that there were a good number of people who left stores after seeing the Xbox One's price raised back up since they were set to purchase the system at its Holiday price.

Sony had a focused sharp strategy to grab the early adopters & core gamers. But they lack a long term vision and this may come back to bite them.

Microsoft completely lost the plot with their short term strategy to grab the early adopters & core gamers. Launching a console at $100 higher than the competition while their console consistently underperformed as regards to multi-plats was a disaster. But they do have a better long term vision. If DX12 delivers on its promise and MS execute their vision, the Xbox may just pull ahead in the long term.

Yeah, you can see the thinking pretty clearly there. They wanted to differentiate themselves as the "premium" all-in-one entertainment box. They thought people would pick a gaming console based primarily on its TV/cable features.

That's apples and oranges, though. Sony didn't do a reveal prior to E3, unless I'm forgetting something. If you want to talk E3, yeah, they were both roughly equivalent, although Sony stole the show with their gamer-centric policy announcements and price point, and because, by E3, the reveal had created a lot of backlash for MS.

Sony did a reveal prior to E3 Andy. They did the Playstation event in February of 2013 where they showcased Knack,Driveclub,Killzone and Infamous as games and about the architecture.

Oh, okay, I forgot that.

What!?

I think One of 2 things will happen .....

1# Xbox Brand will be sold.

OR

2# MS will work on(if they aren't already) releasing Xbox 2(4) Earlier then expected(as they already lost this gen) giving them a next-gen head-start as that strategy works better then them going toe to toe with PS.

Ok, I think the thread has run its course.
