So even if you preordered you're not guaranteed to play in closed beta?
If you preordered, you are in.

A few notes about my play session last night. The Beta isn't too different from the alpha. Your ship is more affected by storms now and you compass goes crazy when you're in one (although if someone is watch the world map, this isn't a big deal).

I can't find the skull quest lady. Did they take her out for the beta. Quests seem to be longer now. We had one quest where we had 6 chests.

Played in a four person ship for the first time last night. I know see how small ships will be able to compete. The smaller ships are faster and much more maneuverable.

Got in my first 3 ship battle. That was a blast. It was two small ships versus a big ship. It attracted tons of sharks. I think I saw 5 in the water at one point.

Got to get to work now, but I'll share a fun story later about when we stole a ship last night.

*edit. There is a sniper rifle in beta.

Yes, and use your spy glass for goodness sakes. They really are invaluable.

For instance. My brother and I were in a two person ship and finishing the final part of our quest. As we came up on the island we could see from far away that there was another ship on the other side of the island. We could see that the sails were up and that no one was onboard. So rather than stopping and shooting at the ship, we sailed right past it and my brother hopped of and climbed aboard their ship. They had a chest on board. Rather than just take their chest and leave, we decided to be dastardly pirates and my brother raised the anchor and sailed off with the ship. Once we got a little ways away, he pointed the ship at some big rocks and took the chest and jumped in the water and I came and picked him up.

So those two guys were stuck on that island without a ship and without a chest they had earned. To keep their chest, one if them would have had to go to the mermaid and spawn a new ship and then sail back to the island to pick.up his buddy. If it was a solo player, he would had to leave his chest altogether and hope that no one steals it while he brings his ship back.

Another cool thing; we found a cursed chest that made you drunk when you picked it up. It also played music the whole time (what would you do with a drunken sailor). Trying to get that chest back to the ship while sharks are after you was a big pain, but that one chest was worth about 50% more than other chests from that same quest. I've also heard that one cursed chest cries the whole time and you have to keep bailing water out of your ship or you sink. Another cursed chest doesn't let you drop it ,so you can't do much to help your crew until you turn it in.

I preordered but can't find anywhere to get in.

You have to download the black costume thingie. The beta should then be in your Ready to Install section. If your still not seeing it, check the Sea of Thieves' form.

Also, does anyone know if they are going to fix the audio so other peoples’ voices come in through the headset vs the speaker? It gets difficult to hear people over the game sounds sometimes.

So I just had this game streaming on Twitch the past hour or so while doing some work. My impressions of what I saw...

+ I'm not sure if this is the game, but the future of multiplayer looks like this. And this might be the game.

- The first person combat looks truly terrible. I'm not sure if combat is pervasive enough in this game for that to really matter. Boat combat looks fun though.

+ The water in this game is from the year 2025. Looks unbelievably awesome.

- The character designs (faces in particular) are really off putting. Hopefully Rare can address this somehow. Everything else looks nice.

+ Conceptually brilliant. Feels like Rare wanted to make a game that required player communication, which I in particular appreciate.

- Hopefully it's just the beta but it feels like a bit too much time is spent on the ship and not enough on the islands. Also, are all the islands really small?

If I had to bet, I think this will probably be a hit for Microsoft, but I don't have a very strong belief at this point. Either way, hats off to MS for letting Rare work on this for 4+ years. I hope it becomes huge.

Well, not all the island are small. Once you complete most of the stuff it will change. The multiplayer stuff is really good and random which it give the reply value really high for years to come.

I love the art style because I am done with the realism stuff.

I am going to do another stream but I want to know if anyone here wants to join or we can just play and I can record and have it uploaded to youtube later.

Does anyone want to sail?

Agreed on just about everything. From what I’m hearing the beta is still just a very small taste of what the final game will be.

But we’ll see. It’s fun, but the beta isn’t much different than the Alpha. I wish they had included more stuff to show what we can expect.

The foundation is there though...could be fantastic.

I thought you could change that in the ingame options? I thought for sure I saw an option.

Can't tonight, but any time this weekend.

Wonder how you got that hole on you way back with the treasure, can waves damage your ship as well?

If you pass through a storm you and your ship can get struck by lightning which can cause holes. Additionally if you exit the map the ocean turns to blood and holes will form until you return to the map or you sink.

Some outposts have AI cannons that fire when you're near which is probably what happened to Nervous. I think when he inspects the damage you can briefly see a splash behind the boat so it probably received a stray cannonball.

Are you guys digging this? What's the consensus?!

Vendetta.

As a lone pirate i stayed up til 5am last night because I wanted revenge.

So i did my longest quest so far, 3 stages. 3 islands. 3 chests. 1 was regular, 2 were Chests of 1000 grogs so when you pick it up you walk as you do when drunk. Getting to port was not a problem....getting the chests off the ship was an issue when you can't walk straight. Took me a while to make it up to the deck.

I managed to get one off the ship and hid it around the other side of the island outpost. I returned for another only to find a galleon pulling in at the pier and it blew me out of the water. I respawned just in time and just managed to grab the 2nd grog chest as the ship went under, I don't know what happened but the screen went white and I thought i died. Thankfully after 30 seconds i spawned in the ocean and drunkly swam to sure.

I managed to stumble to the outpost proper and 3 guys from the ship that destroyed mine are waiting around the tent where you trade chests in.

I manage to bunny hop over their heads and cash it in by mashing X which is easier said then done when you're stumbling all over the shop. They kill me but it doesn't matter, I respawn in the ocean and go to retrieve my 2nd grog chest. Unfortunately i wasn't lucky enough that time and i guess they took the chests for themselves.

So pissed off was I with them ruining an hours work, I figured I would creep aboard their ship and sail it away..... they hadn't dropped anchor so i was able to raise the sails and let the ship run away by itself, unfortunately one guy was still aboard and killed me when i took the wheel.

I must have done this 6 - 10 times. I guess they got fed up because they left. However one of them sent a message which i overheard when standing next to their crewmate on the barge of the dead. "Head North West" I guess for their next quest.

Knowing this, i used a mermaid to spawn a new boat and headed North West. I take to the crowsnest and use a spyglass to spot 3 raised mast at an extreme distance. So i figure I will follow slow, sails at half mast and wait for them to take to shore on their next quest...and I will destroy their ship marooning them for a time.

I start to gain on them as they change course and figure that for such a large ship they're not going that fast. Odd....anyways I must have circled them 3 times without taking a shot, yet I landed half a dozen. I am the Dread Pirate Roberts.

So they slow down.....easy prey, but it's all a ruse, one of their number has snuck aboard and dropped my anchor stranding my ship and shoots me with a blunderbuss.

They use my respawn time to hit me with a dozen cannonballs, i try to swim to their ship to commandeer it, but they have guys in the water and theres sharks around. I killed two.

Needless to say, i need another ship. I manage to locate them using the crows nest again and I find them docked at an island, I decide head on hasn't worked for me. I take the long way round the island and approach them from behind at 1/4 mast. I pull off 6 perfect shots but for f***s sake their ship is 2 feet above land so it never takes on enough water to sink.

It's 4 vs 1 on the ground. New ship time.

I find them again at a nearby island. I abandon ship and head through the centre of the island and have high ground. They have 1 guy on board. I snipe him from the rocks above and kill him with one shot.

This is it.

I dive in and manage to raise all their sails...i finally have their ship...its slow to start but I manage to ram it into the nearby rocks causing it to sink.

It's 5 am and I am laughing like a madman. I f***ed you. I f***ed you all.

Fair analysis. I think your thoughts here are very much in line with the general public opinions of those who haven’t played the game.

I haven’t played it either. It’s shot up to #1 in my curiosity list and I’m excited about what it could be. I assume that Rare will be iterating on this game for years...especially since I believe it’s one of the games Microsoft will leverage to drive Game Pass for years to come.

Of my real concerns, combat is #1. I think the character faces could and will improve if they get enough feedback. I expect more depth to be added (and they’ve already announced more depth to be available in March). I do wonder if combat is intentionally clunky because they are trying to make something that doesn’t require precision and fast reflexes. They want something that will work on phones and tablets someday.

Combat isn't really in the game. Ship combat is the combat focus.

The big issue this game has is that it is just one big fetch quest. There doesn't seem to be any real diversity or depth to the voyages or world.

So I have an issue with the quest and spawn system a little bit.

Quests take place near and around the port where you start. Not really a big deal, but it does make it so it's hard to get away from people in your area. Out running them isnt the problem though. last night were were finishing up a quest and were on the final chapter. Were were on an island on the south of the map. We see another 4 person ship heading for us. We all get aboard and start a battle with them. It was actually a really good long one that went across a huge area. We eventually both sunk right next to a small island when we rammed them with our ship. We had two chests at the time, so we swim to the island. They swim fir the same island too. We all start fighting and killing each other like crazy. It went on forever and got to be very boring after a while.

Eventually one of their crew mates went to their mermaid and spawned their ship and they crew stopped spawning at the island. We do the same thing and head back to our island and that same shop is there again. We fight again. Ships sink and respawn. This goes on a few more times and we waste a ton of time. No treasure was won and you don't gain experience or anything, so it was really quite pointless. So we decide to abandon that quest and start another one because we're sick of fighting these guys over and over again. But because we are in that area we get a quest that has an island tight next to where we were.

I guess we could have just sailed off and not started a new quest once we were a long ways away, but that still kind of sucks.

Also, you can be shot and hurt while you are spawning in from the ghost ship. There were times where I would spawn up and was already missing 3/4 of my life because on if those guys was shooting me.

I love the pirate life aspect of this and have done some dastardly things to people, but I do worry about people greiffing other players for extended periods of time.
