The aftermath......I swear, some people should not be allowed to procreate....If he is a man, they should turn him into a eunuch...If she is a woman, tie up her tubes......People this vain, narcissist and dumb@$$ stupid should not be allowed to procreate!

Still, I'll put him one IQ point higher than the guy who tried to take the selfie with the rattlesnake...

Saw a pic of that stupid guy's face after the fact....**SHIVERS**....Talk about nightmare fuel! The thing is, can't say he didn't deserve it....I mean, just what WILL happen when you try to take a selfie with a rattlesnake...A FLARKING RATTLESNAKE...........What was he thunking?!?!?!? The rattlesnake is a doll??? JESUS!

He only wanted a selfie. It isn't like he purposely went out to destroy it, or had a sudden onset of brain wave activity as he walked past and decided to destroy it

Yes, he made a silly decision that resulted in the statue being destroyed, but come on...we all do silly things from time to time.

Yeah I don't want to take away from the stupidity of this guy, but going off the photo it looks like this statue is completely accessible to anyone at anytime. It also looks pretty solid prior to crumbling.

Is noone responsible for protecting this statue, inspecting it for structural integrity, and realizing the very real possibility someone will try to climb up it?

I think the added "selfie" component sort of makes it way easier to just say "this guy is such an a******" and hey maybe that's true.

I'm just saying if this statue was so important (it looks pretty cool) this type of incident should have been prevented by a barrier or something.

I think it's kind of a given that you aren't supposed to climb on statues in general to be honest. Especially ones like this. Don't get me wrong, this kind of behavior falls under the "crazy young kids" type of category, and there probably could have been some kind of barrier, but it looks like this was a public space. As in, the statue is outside. I find it's pretty unusual to have that kind of supervision required for something so public.

Oh yeah for sure. I'm just trying to put myself in this guys shoes.

When I was 9 years old, I may or may not have tried to climb up this statue if left unsupervised.

I don't mean having a guard, but maybe wrought iron spike fence type thing without obstructing the statue or the interesting stuff below it may have prevented this.

Anyway, if you look at more pictures and see the whole front of the building I understand why they wouldn't want to add any anti-climbing barrier. Seems like he climbed up to the supporting part and grabbed onto parts of the statue (arm, sword possibly) and his weight detatched the statue and it shattered on the ground.

On a positive note, I imagine they will have no problem having a professional put it back together with every microscopic piece and not even look like it ever happened.

Wonder how bad the guy who climbed it gets punished?

What a dumbass kid.

Hopefully, there are people out there that can piece together shattered artwork like it's new.

As for punishment? Well, it's not a robbery or serious crime in that people were hurt. But it does involve one of a kind priceless artwork.

IMO, a big fine would do the trick. Help pay for the restoration, and nothing hurts 99.999% of people more than a big ass fine. Shyt, people fight over $40 parking tickets. I'd say the punishment be the cost of estimated restoration work + $25,000 fine.

Or heck, see what the appraisal value of a statue is and charge the family that fee.
