With the rumors of the NX intensifying lately, we are on the brink of a new generation of gaming. While the Xbox One and PS4 are still young, they still have been around for a considerable amount of time. The Vita and 3DS are showing their age and who knows if Sony is even going to support handhelds after this.

Anyway, figure I will start a discussion. What are some of your favorite games of this generation? By this generation, I mean : Wii U, PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, and Vita.

I can't say this order is in any particular arrangement.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U:
Definitely the best Smash yet and that's saying something. It's my most played game of the generation so far. Loaded with content, incredibly fun and satisfying, and just a great experience. It's Smash in HD and it's as perfect as it could be.

Bloodborne:
Amazing experience. Takes the boring parts of the Souls games (for me) and speeds it up. Having being my first Souls game I completed, I was really satisfied with myself. Amazing combat, incredible bosses, and a really, really impressive atmosphere. Definitely the best game of the year so far for me.

Mario Kart 8:
Probably the best Kart, right there with MK7. Similar to Smash, amazing graphics and amazing online play. The support Nintendo provided was incredible. The tracks, music, and characters were great.

Pikmin 3:
One of the best games on the system. So unique and different. Great visuals, especially for being a Wii game ported to Wii U, basically.

Bravely Default:
One of the better turn based JRPGs I have played in some time. Accessible yet challenging. It really changed the game in terms of gaining experience.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Probably the best Zelda game since Ocarina of Time for me. Loved it.

Some honorable mentions: Fire Emblem: Awakening, Batman: Arkham Knight, Super Mario 3D World, inFamous: Second Son, Dead Rising 3, Bayonetta 2, Pokemon X and Y, Super Mario 3D Land

Games I've enjoyed so far:

The Last of Us - I know this is a remaster of a last-gen game, but it's still the best game I've played this generation. It took me two tries before I could get into it, but when I did, I found a great game.

Dragon Age Inquisition -- it gets a lot of flak for its boring sidequests, but game flowed well, the action was pretty good, and the characters were memorable.

Far Cry 4 -- The Far Cry formula works for me. I had played Far Cry 3 not long ago, and I never felt bored with 4.

Life is Strange - what a nice little surprise this game was.

Tales from the Borderlands - Telltale's best game series since The Walking Dead season one.

Witcher 3 - in the middle of this one at the moment. A vast game with mostly entertaining quests.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - also in the middle of this. Mysterious and weird.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition - I know this is a remaster of a last-gen game, but I really enjoyed playing it through again.

p.s. Add Journey - another last-gen game with a new-gen coating. One of my favorite games of all time.

Ori and the Blind Forest. The best 2d platformer since the SNES days imo.

Dying Light. Dead Island done right but much more than that.

I agree with Andy on Tomb Raider DE. I didn't play it last gen, so I enjoyed it at 1080p/60 and it was beautiful in motion. I thought the gunplay was more fun than TLoU.

TLoU remaster. Beat it on PS3 and PS4. One of my favorite games ever.

A bunch of Nintendo stuff.
MK8, Mario World 3D, DK, Wind Waker HD.

Bloodborne. It's a next gen Demon's Souls and better in every way. Very open exploration and a huge overall map.

Forza Horizon 2 - Simply one of the best Arcade Racers ever.
Witcher 3 - an amazing RPG which I still haven't finished. It is a content gold mine.
Titanfall - Game was fun, and a little different. A rare thing nowadays.
Ori & the Blind Forest - Super fun, engrossing, and great gameplay.
Shadow of Mordor - very fun, and the Nemesis system was fantastic.

Rayman Legends: One of the best platform games ever.
Dragon Age Inquisition: Great addition to the series and I lost alot of time in it.
Massive Chalice: Currently playing it. It's more fun than I thought it would be. Its giving me that "just one more turn" feeling I usually get with RTS games.

Titanfall.

Should be cheap now (maybe $20?), all DLC maps free, a freebie if you have EA Access. The game still has 7,000 people playing when I play at night at around 9 pm EST.

Great gameplay, nice stats, best maps I've played in a shooter since CoD4/WaW/MW2 (except there's 3-4 maps that look very similar to each other), the pilot/mech gameplay is a nice change from other shooters which seem to be 100% foot solider stuff. Adding in all the free maps, you should have about 20 maps to play. The Frontier Defence co-op mode is fun too. Not the most challenging mode if you have decent gamers with you, but something different.

I really must spend more time with this game. Think I played maybe 10 hours of it at launch but I had recently spent a lot of time with Civ 5 so I was burned out. The good thing is once I find the time and ambition to go back to it, well, goodbye free time.

Last PC game I played a lot was Heroes of M&M 3. I did a YT of Endless Legend and it looks slick. It looks like it has the right combo for me of... turned based action, strategy, gritty looking visuals (not all that cartoony stuff).

I wonder if it'll run good on my laptop though. Reco specs from Steam:

RECOMMENDED:
  • OS: Windows Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1
  • Processor: 3.5Ghz Intel Core i5 or equivalent
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: 1GB nVidia Geforce GTX660 or equivalent, 1GB ATI HD7850 or equivalent
  • DirectX: Version 9.0c
  • Hard Drive: 3 GB available space
  • Sound Card: DirectX 9 Compatible Audio
  • Additional Notes: Minimum Resolution: 1280 x 720

My laptop (I think I got it early 2011):

- Windows 7
- i7 Q740 1.7 ghz
- 4 gb ram
- 4 gb GT445M

Not looking good. probably run like a slide show. On the plus side, my laptop seems to beat out the minimum specs.

Bloodborne
Destiny
Battlefield 4
Dark Souls 2
The Witcher 3
Crysis 3
BF Hardline
TLOUR
Titanfall
Borderlands PS
Killer Instinct Season 1

Hmm not sure. I know I've seen a similar site suggested so not sure if it was this one, but you could try http://www.systemrequirementslab.com to see what it says.

Your CPU and graphic card are looking a little suspect. You might be able to get by a 1080p or less if you turn down some of the graphic options.

Civ: Beyond Earth was such a disappointment that Endless legend was a welcome relief. But if you just came from Civ 5, you might have had RTS fatigue.

Thanks guys.

I downloaded the app and tested it. CPU and GPU failed. The rest were ok. The gpu I guess is in the wrong class (too old) as the amount of ram and pixel/vertex shaders actually qualifies.

It's an old laptop, but so much for getting a "quad core" cpu. lol

Yea I did one play through of that. Came within like 5 turns of winning (came in second) and haven't played it since. And that space mobile game they released I just lol'd at.

Oh hell, I totally forgot about Alien Isolation. Great game.
For sure! And to think I nearly skipped it due to several negative reviews. All I can think is that some reviewers just were not in the right head space to play it properly, and tried to plow through it like a regular shooter. After reading impressions here (the opinions I trust most on the internets), I realized I had to get it, and I'm so glad I did!

My list above is in order too, so basically until Witcher 3, it was my "Game of this Gen" so far. Anyone who hasn't played it, if you love stealth and high-adrenaline gameplay, definitely check it out.

Witcher 3
Dragon age 3

Which are pretty much the only 2 games I play (other than Diablo 3)
