Something i really noticed after watching Sony's E3

I was impressed with both conferences, though to me it was more of a games vs announcements battle. MS had some awesome announcements. Halo Warzone sounds amazing, the new UI sounds like a huge improvement, BC is a big deal to me, Fallout mods is just crazy as I never expected that, and the new controller looked awesome. Sony had better games though as Uncharted and Horizon were super impressive. However, I didn't get the excitement for the last guardians at all, looks just ok to me.

Some of you are bipolar I swear.

As for OP's post, I somewhat agree. Example being Forza 6, visually it didn't impress me at all. I'm still not sure if it's the colors or the lighting but there was no wow factor for me even in the various weather conditions. Watched a few more videos today and it's really not doing anything for me. I mean honestly PGR4 and GT5 impressed me more despite the fact from a technical standpoint Forza 6 is doing more.

I don't think Forza has ever really be one of those games that WOW graphically. Forza's magic is in the gameplay & polish. Forza is a series that you need to play to wowed, IMO. What did WOW me this time, though, was their all out rain approach. Actual bodies of water with aquaplaning :surprise: What other Sim based game does that?

I'm sure the gameplay is awesome, but visually it's like Nyquil to me. As for hydroplaning games like Pcars, GT5 or whatever don't have hydroplaning? If Forza is the first racer to add hydroplaning...that's pretty sad/funny...mostly sad that it took this long for any racer to have it despite the numerous racers that have weather.

One thing I noticed watching E3 is there finally seems to be some differentiation between these two companies (Sony and MS).

I always felt, in the back of my mind, that the console wars have been stupid these past couple of years because there really isn't much distinction between the two consoles. For the most part, the best games on each console have been multiplatform titles (ie on the competing console).

This E3 really allowed the public to start seeing where each company is starting to sail their ship. I think now with Nintendo out of the way, for the most part, these companies feel like there's a little more room to explore.

PS: Did anyone else think during E3 "Holy s***, games have gotten good"? Ten years ago, if any one of these games got shown, I would have been on the ground swallowing my tongue with my eyes rolled back in my head.

As far as I am aware, no other game has it. A lot of people think P cars does have it, but if you watch a lot of the storm videos/replays, you can tell it isn't puddles making them spin.

I think the rain feature isn't getting much interest is because 99.9% of gamers, if they aren't told about it, wouldn't be able to tell it's there when playing the game. That might be a low estimate.

The problem I have with getting excited by trailers like Forza 6 is that they show a lot of replay camera angles and you never (or rarely) get to see the game from the angle I normally drive in game from (behind the vehicle).

This was the most impressive graphics for me at E3.

Cuphead looks astonishing.

Yea I thought Cuphead looked awesome. Will definitely be picking it up.

I see.

I think I reached that point in the 360/PS3 era.

I watched a video of it today and I couldn't believe how bad the buildings around the track looked, they were really bad from a distance but once they got closer they didn't improve all that much. I think NFS popped more visually but that's likely due to it taking place at night and all of the lights and wet tracks standing out more.

It's a bit long, but if you don't mind that, read it and tell me what you think.

Now you guys know me as someone who highly prefers Xbox One and how Microsoft handles things. I still don't have a PS4, that will happen next year. I really enjoyed Microsoft's show, but unexpectedly Sony's show for me, was far better. I also noticed something, it's nothing new, but it slightly saddens me.

When i buy a new console, i expect to be blown the f*** away by graphics. Ryse definitely did that, not its gameplay, but graphically for damn sure too. Also what i've seen of Killzone SF and Infamous SS looked really goddamn good. I am a big graphics fan, even though i DO realize that....gameplay>graphics. But i can never agree when some people say...''who cares about graphics, even if this game had 360 graphics i'd be ok with that.'' Sorry...but no, just no.

So i was hoping to be blown away by some graphics in new and/or already announced MS games. Halo 5 looked good, but didn't exactly do it for me, and i have to be honest, i did not like the shimmering/aliasing one bit. Not when Halo 4 looks soooooooooooo clean. How will that be when it launches? We will see then. That said...nothing blew me away. Nothing that made me say'''oooooooh shiiiiiiieeeet, this looks too good!''. Rare's collection is awesome, but the new IP? Errr....i don't know yet. I would have gone wild if they had had a proper Banjo 3. :(

I am not even going to talk about the surprises from Sony too much..(The last guardian and Shenmue 3 kickstarter) but when they showed Guerilla's Horizon (i can be proud when a developer like that is from my country) and i saw the environments, i thought to myself...''damn if this is in-game, it already looks prettier than Witcher 3.'' Then they showed gameplay and my jaw dropped to the floor. That is truly something you'd call a real next gen/current gen game, something that in no way would be possible on PS3. The other time my jaw again dropped was during Uncharted 4. I was not a big fan of the previous demo, not too impressed at all. But this was crazy, just too f***ing good. How exactly can they make worlds like this , looking so damn good with little/no aliasing to be seen and this smooth? ND are truly wizards.

So in a few words...it actually pains me to say this as a big Xbox dude, but Sony is bringing the true state of the art graphics and Microsoft was not....not yet at least. I don't believe it's all because of the hardware difference, it's part of the reason, but i also believe Microsoft sadly just lacks the developers with that kind of talent. I also like how Sony actually shows gameplay of games that are not even close to release (Horizon), true gameplay, why did MS not do the same with Recore? A game that is apparently releasing Spring 2016.........

Maybe Scalebound and Crackdown are truly going to impress, but no way on Guerilla and ND levels. I've seen some pretty crazy comments on other forums, after Sony's show was over, things like..Xbox is dead, go pack your things Microsoft and all that bulls***. No way that's how it's for me, but i AM a bit disappointed that my console of choice is not yet getting games with really jawdropping graphics, but i am positive that the system is capable of it.

I'd almost forget Gears 4. Mixed feelings about that demo. I had truly expected a first Gears 4 reveal to be jawdropping, like it was with the first one back in the day. That's not to say it looked bad, no, the moving foliage was great, really helped bring a nice atmosphere and the creatures at the end were great too. But it missed a whole lot of graphical punch. It was way too...flat. No bumpmapping on ground/walls, no real impressive lighting yet, except for cool flashlight in the beginning of the video. I DID really dig the destruction part though. Now the game is 1.5 years away from release,so a lot is no doubt going to happen, i expect it to look a lot better next E3, this is Gears man. I assume they just wanted to show something and not another CG trailer.

With all that said, i am looking very forward to the holidays with games like Halo 5(hope they can improve things some more, i just despise shimmering), Rise of the Tomb Raider, maybe Fable Legends and of course my favorite Fallout 4.

A few things to point out. Firstly Sony has a few studio's such as Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games and Sony Santa Monica who are at the front of graphics and technology so it is not surprise their games look the best but even Sucker Punch pulled out amazing graphics with Infamous, heck let's not forget Evolution with Driveclub. I believe SCE studios share technology and information around their studio's which is why they are good, Naughty Dog has the ICE team in their office which are one of the best teams for improving technology and improving graphics. Secondly most of Sony studio's have their in-house engine which they have designed for specific games and not just used the Unreal engine like for Gears. I'd be intrigued to know how Microsoft game studios actually have their own engine. You are always going to get better looking games if you have a specially designed engine for a certain type of game. And lastly the PS4 is the more powerful console so you'd expect the PS4 to have better looking games. Though I still think XB1 exclusives look great graphically, especially Quantum Break and Ryse.

I've been one of the most vocal criticizers of Microsoft since the team xbox days. even as a pretty dedicated fan to Microsoft and the xbox fan.

I've gotten in to many disagreements and debates with many of you here in regards to Microsoft's direction the last few years of the 360 leading into the Xbox One.

In my eyes, all of my criticisms were on point with the initial reveal of the Xbox One. Microsoft was disconnected from their fans/consumers and the initial xbox one reveal demonstrated this.

That being said, I thought Microsoft had a great E3 and imo, simply edged out Sony because there were more games in their presentation that are in tune with my tastes in games. I couldn't give two s***s about shenmue or final fantasy or last guardian. Never played shenmue or final fantasy, most likely never will.

Uncharted and Horizon on the other hand, I thought were damn great and may sway me to picking up a ps4 next year. I think these games demonstrated Sony's edge in the hardware department compared to the xbox one, but that's not to say the games on the xbox one weren't impressive. They looked great, really great, just not as great as Sony's offerings.

It is what it is though, and the hardware battle was lost long before the xb1 and ps4 launched with the decisions the old leadership made. The new leadership imo having been freaking fantastic and have been making the right calls since they took over.

I'm hoping that since E3 is the biggest gaming expo, that they withhold a lot of their future announcements and focused on what's coming this year with just a sprinkle of the future.

I think gamescon is where they are going to talk a lot about next year. I mean, we already know Quantum Break, Scalebound and Crackdown are games for next year. I'm hoping for maybe another game or two that haven't been announced to be announced at gamescon.

lol. Hrudey, youre alright my friend. ;)

I do think Recor could be one of those creative games along the same lines of Horizon. We'll have to wait and see, but I think that one will be worthy of my interest and possible investment. With the creator of Metroid at the helm, you cant go wrong.

Horizon has been in development for 4 and a half years whilst Recore has been in development for 1 year and 4 months according to Gamespot. You really shouldn't be putting them in the breadth as Horizon is a massive investment akin to the Witcher or Fallout. Recore is more comparable to something like TLG.

I missed this earlier. They don't have the creator of Metroid. They have Armature Studios which was formed by some employees who left Retro after the Metroid Prime trilogy. I think what you might have meant to say was that the guy at the helm was the guy who is responsible for Mega Man.

Could be. Im sure I heard "From the creators of Metroid". I could be wrong though.

Though I personally preferred the announcements on the Xbox conference more; I think it's totally understandable that more people walked away more impressed with Sonys.

Trying to look at things as an outsider, I even rated the conferences with Sony having an edge. They had a few announcements that packed a bigger punch from a highlight-reel standpoint. FF7 and Shenmue 3 would melt the pants off of any room of gamers... outside of Half-life 3, I don't think there is are a pair of games that have more user requests. So Sony succeeded in capturing that nostalgia with perfect announcements, Horizon was the icing on the cake for them and Uncharted 4 was impressive as people would expect.

The way I feel (in terms of first party exclusives) is that Sony is better in terms of art direction but MS is better when it comes to nailing down gameplay.

This would have been a classic E3 if Valve showed up to the PC whatever and announced Half Life 3 running on Source 2...Valve pls. T_T

Some of you are bipolar I swear.

*Raises hand*

I admit it. Video games have made me bipolar as all hell over the years. One minute i'm like yeah, Microsoft! Next minute i'm like yeah, Sony! I just love consoles and games. All of them. Thankfully my bipolar hasn't translated into the real world. I'm like afraid to even talk about games with people who aren't as interested as me. I don't want to come off as a huge nerd. If the people i know knew how wet gaming really makes me they probably wouldn't talk to me anymore, lol. But yeah, i'm glad i have you guys to discuss our passion for the industry with.

MS show for me. Had great games, cool features, various games available to test out that day and most of the big hits come out in 2015.

Only two things wrong with the show: Awful Gears 4 video and that Elite Controller while cool, priced at $150 is insane.

Horizon looked great, I didn't like the character they were using at all, but I'm sure that's just placeholder and you can customize it.

Worrying about gfx still think cuphead has best gfx on any console.

I actually agree with you! Praise the lawd! Praise the lawd!

I never like playing as female main characters. From what I've read though, GG has a very specific story to tell with this main character so something tells me we'll be stuck with this red headed chick.

My girlfriend watched both shows with me and she didn't get excited about a single game MS showed. She was amazed at Horizon and Uncharted, more so Uncharted. "I can't wait to watch you play that" "omg it looks amazing" etc etc. She did think Halo 5 looked cool, mainly because I just got done playing Halo ce in MCC and I'm in the middle of playing halo 2 so she is kind of into it now.

Sadly my opinion matches hers pretty much exactly. There wasn't a single game at MS show that just made me go "wow". Halo really should have been that game but it wasn't. I think they really dropped the ball going for 60 fps in halo 5 campaign. Either that or they need to stop being lazy and make a new gawd damn engine.

People should have left MS show thinking "damn halo 5 looked freaking bonkers". Instead halo 5 is in the dumpster right now in a lot of peoples minds. I think a lot of people don't even realize that's why they weren't as happy with MS show. Still a day one for me though but bah. I dunno what they're thinking. Why wouldn't you go all out and do a new engine from the ground up on xb1 and really wow us.

Idk judging by what they said, scale and smoothness are there two keypoints visually, they said some of their maps are 4x any of the other halo games so running at 60fps with more scale, slightly better visuals has to be taxing as hell.

Yea but I don't think that decision worked out for them. Not to mention the game most likely is not going to be 1080p either. It just screamed underwhelming to me. I did enjoy all the nice stuff going on in the background though. It was like Titanfall but with a slight graphics upgrade.

I'll go as far to say Killzone still looks better graphically than Halo 5 and that is sad to me. Killzone is a launch game.
