Guerrilla Games' main studio in Amsterdam, where PlayStation 4-exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn is being made, will not be affected.

"Within [Sony Interactive Entertainment] Worldwide Studios, we have a regular process of review in order to consider projects coming to completion and the deployment of resources," Sony said in a statement sent to Eurogamer. "In such a competitive landscape this enables us to continue to create and produce high-quality, innovative and commercially viable projects.

"Having reviewed and assessed all current projects and plans for the short and medium term, we have decided that in order to deliver on our strategic objectives, it is necessary to make some changes to the European studios structure.

"As a result, it has been decided that Guerrilla Cambridge Studio will close."

Sony added: "It is regrettable that this decision will lead to compulsory redundancies. Whilst we accept that this decision will mean that we risk losing high calibre staff, by focusing on other Studios with exciting new projects in development, (including continued work on PlayStation VR), we believe we will be in a stronger position going forward and able to offer the best possible content of the highest quality to our players.

I am very ambivalent about this one. It sucks Sony has closed another studio, especially as I feel Cambridge could have made a cool PS4 game whether it be Killzone or a new I.P.But I also understand games are expensive to make, RIGS probably did not sell well but also I read Cambridge helped a lot with tech in Killzone so maybe the tech people were already integrated into Guerrilla Games and most of Sony's studios also don't help with the tech side now. Also I think evaluating their European studios is good, as right now apart from Guerrilla Games (who apart about to become the ND's of Europe after Horizon for Sony) the rest of them are not doing enough. Sony's American set of studios are incredibly strong now with Bend back in the PS4 fold and SM on God Of War. Japan has arisen from a slumber from last gen where they frankly embarrassing. I mean PD are still PD, GT will always make money and sell but Japan Studio are back with a bang and arguably Sony's most interesting studio and are now producing good to great games in TLG and Gravity Rush 2. Europe though with the exception of Guerrilla need a shake up. Media Molecule need to get dreams out asap or start convincing people of the game, Sony London are a freaking joke, they should be the pinnacle of their European studios and making killer AAA games but they work on VR and singstar and no knows what SIE North West will be like. Which makes the Cambridge shutting more puzzling as they were a studio who were easily talented enough to make a new I.P or work on Killzone.

Dont think it has much to do with VR or not. Sony normally shuts underperformers down on completion of the project (Zipper, Evolution, Liverpool)

San Diago might also be next once MLB 17 is done for a number of reasons.

As first party goes, its really redundant to own studios that make VR or Indie level games when the market is teeming with both and can easily be bought for far less overhead.

If Dreams were released that might be what ultimately ends MM. In Dreams development time, they moved 8 million units of LBP1,2 and Tearaway. Dreams has to do the same to be considered a worthwhile investment of 7 years

I don't understand the thinking behind this closure. PSVR came out like two months ago, its selling well and they are already closing one of their VR studios? Its almost like Sony is going to cut and run away from PSVR.

waaaaat??

waaaaat??

Just my personal view based on signs and portents.

Sony shut the servers down for MLB 14 after only a year, indicating lack of online community (and sales that warrent keeping them on)

MLB license is costly, Sony used to have PS2,PS3 and PSP versions all selling their fair share, today the PS3 and Vita versions are miniscule. There will be no PSP 2. PS4Pro and PS4 are one and the same

The game has limited appeal outside the USA.

They laid off everyone at SSD except for the MLB team indicating they intend no additional projects for the short term (in gaming 2-5 years)

Sony finishes the games before shutting the studio, so it would be wise to keep MLB 17 on track as usual.

Now of i were Sony i'd ask, we have 80-100 people making a sports game that sells less than a million a year, with a costly license that only sells in the USA.

Or do I want 80 -100 people that could make a game that has global appeal minus the cost of a sports license and get a MLB game when EA or 2k release their games when they pick up the MLB license.

Sony used to have the Formula One license but opted not to renew when the sales fell off and that went multi.

Strictly speaking, Sony isnt losing a game or an exclusive.

Good thing Microsoft has been canceling games and closing studios left and right. Now Sony can do it without people saying the sky is falling.

Last gen, if Sony sold a building it was the end of the world. What a turn around for the King.

Is this the start of 10 pages of concern posts over a studio suddenly everyone loved so much and how brutal this is for Sony? Maybe we can combine this with the Scalebound thread for balance.

Meh im not concerned. Sonys well within their right to shut down studios not delivering games on time (especially ones making VR demos) but it should be noted, they have quite a few of those.

The only good that could come out of this is if EA picks it back up. Their MLB games were a boat load better than 2K's.

Because Sony still has a ton of games in development that we know is coming beyond 2017, which we do not with Xbox. Plus as much as I like Guerrilla Cambridge, Sony might have replaced them with Sony North West studio to work on VR stuff. People are upset but Sony still has its best studios open and making games.

That's right..a big company like MS has no plans for 2018

Now give us Wipeout VR

Sony closes Rigs studio Guerrilla Cambridge = 3 1/2 pages.

Scalebound Canceled = 61 pages.

People should definitely be just as upset to see a niche PS VR game go instead of a big new IP action adventure RPG fantasy game go that's been teased for 3 years.

Wait, didn't RIGS come out? This isn't even apples to apples.

No. PG kept their jobs while these guys didn't so yeah not the same ;)

Sony just destroyed their brand image.

Bye bye Playstation.

Is all due to Sony mismanaging them and making them do VR games.

Funny but inaccurate. Sony didn't cancell one of their biggest games of 2017 while leaving their audience questioning what major releases are coming down the pipline.

Also we haven't seen a new heavy hitter since Gears while Sony had TLOU Plus they've already shown 3 new potential major franchises like Spiderman, Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn .. Yoshida said they'll announce even more big titles at E3 wich is pretty insane.

Not saying Microsoft is "DOOMED" but they need to step it up. It's 2017 and the line up is pretty bad for a console this late into the generation. Ofcourse it only an opinion but it's the general opinion among gamers.

Not really They are usually spead across other projects at Sony. Not like Guerilla Cambridge did anything special. Rigs is funl but nothing amazing or unforgettable. Definitly nothing like Scalebound.

An the reverse definitely did not happen in this thread

Good point. But I do think the intentions are a bit different. Xbox fans comments here are generally tongue-in-cheek.

Sony fans come in as some supior species. ( even though most us us own two or more consoles) looking down in fained concern for the poor Xbots and their tragic lineup.

It's hilarious.

I'm not sure this thread being completely trolled is any better though
