Sony Slashes Outlook to Loss

Tech Giant To Sell Personal-Computer Unit

Sony Corp. expects a net loss for the fiscal year and will sell its personal-computer unit to fight losses at its core electronics businesses.

do not worry, they are keeping PlayStation

TOKYO—Sony Corp. slashed its annual outlook to a loss, and said it would sell its struggling personal-computer unit, as it fights to stem red ink at its core electronics business.

In its second downward revision in just three months, the Japanese tech giant said Thursday it now expects to lose ¥110 billion ($1.1 billion) in the full year through March–a grim reversal from a previously forecast profit of ¥30 billion. The company also confirmed reports that it is in talks to sell its Vaio PC business to turnaround fund Japan Industrial Partners Inc., adding it hopes to complete the transaction by July 1.

Sony also said it has decided to split off its TV business and operate it as a subsidiary. For the full year, Sony now expects to log losses from the TV business totaling ¥25 billion.

Sony said it would trim 5,000 jobs–1,500 in Japan and 3,500 overseas–by March 2015.

looks like the playstation is keeping the company alive

Results couldn't keep up with the year-ago performance, which was boosted by "Skyfall" and the home entertainment release of "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Sony Quarterly Film Unit Profit Drops
TOKYO – While operating income at Sony jumped 94.6 percent to $860 million (¥90.3 billion) for the October to November quarter, the company reversed its previous forecast of a $300 million profit for the year to March, to a loss of $1.1 billion. The quarterly results were boosted by the strong launch of the PlayStation 4, a 32.5 percent jump in profits to $207 million at the music division, stronger smartphone sales and a weaker yen.

Took them well long enough. The Vaio has been a joke for a decade. One of them even zapped me once.

Didn't even know they had a PC wing.

Sony has been known to have overpriced electronics for a long time. Consumers were realizing this and the "Sony," brand in electronics isn't what it used to be. Why spend $100 more on a TV that offers zero benefit over the cheaper product? Sony's prices have come down in an effort to help but they're not in a good situation. It's nice to see the PlayStation division flourishing. Split it off and make it it's own company to make sure it thrives and survives.

So 10,000 jobs cut in total. That's very unfortunate.

That would make allot of sense. Unfortunately I think Sony as a company is too proud but maybe they will. Look at the 180 they did with the PS4 compared to the PS3.

So true. Especially with their televisions, they are priced hundreds of dollars more than comparable sets from other brand name manufacturers.

I agree regarding television. They need to either bring their prices down and below the competition (which is putting out better products), or make their product a product worth the price they are asking.

Yeah I'm always amazed when I read reviews of their brand electronics like TVs, BluRay players, etc. The online reviews are terrible and they end up costing more. You can't get away with that stuff in 2014. It is too easy to glance at online reviews and find the poor brands.

I bought a Sony Bluray player (because 360 doesn't play bluray), it was decent, except the cross grid interface. Thankfully they have got rid of it on PS.

That's was the only product I bought from Sony for a long time. I am presently surprise their mobile division is doing well, its a crowded market.

I wouldnt be shocked if within the next decade Sony is pushed out off the TV manufacturing, too.

all together now.........Sony is doomed :D

as a company, possibly. if people use it in terms of the playstation, not likely. it would be sold off if Sony corp ever truly went into dire straits.

they need to revamp the company as a whole, the PS is not going to keep them afloat forever.

PS is making big money during PS1 & PS2 era, not sure about last gen (PS3) overall. Ken Kuragi blow a huge sum of money on Cell development, & PS3 were sold at massive loss per unit.

I cannot imagine them making money currently for PS4 since console are sold at loss (& all the R&D cost), in future yes. If they are already making money on PS4, then color me impress, then it can only get better.

But you have to give credit when credit is due, for the past few years, the PS development team have been working hard to polish all the weak points last gen, & you can start to see the improvement in PS4 already, better interface, better controllers, better Driver etc.

I like my Sony-TV, I had a few other TV's die on me. Rarely my TV's lasted more than 2 or 3 years..
Until I bought my current Bravia, wich I've had since flat-screen got common, instead of CRT - I bought it right before PS3-launch, I think it still looks great, I'm fairly certain my next one will also be a Sony-TV. :-)
My brother had a nice Samsung-plasma, wich cost twice of what my TV cost - two years later, but that died after a year and a half - now he's using a Panasonic.
I don't know if modern Sony TV's are probably just as unreliable, since most of the components mostly come from the same places - however due to finally having a TV wich lasted a few years, I still want a Bravia next time, 100$ extra or not. :-P

Of course i mean no ill will for Sony or anyone else but from the looks of it TV's,PC's and movies are dragging the companies profits down.

Their PC's are terribly overpriced, sad to see people lose their jobs.

crazy. I'm surprised the playstation brand hasn't been spinned off into it's own company at this point. Seems like everything else is a sinking ship.

People keep saying this, but is it really that simple? Doesn't Sony own the PS brand cash over fist? I don't think that's something they'd be willing to just give up.

You should buy a better TV for less.

Yep. PlayStation division profits are nowhere near enough to save this sinking ship. They need to try to make it a stand alone company so they at the very least have something another company might buy and pay top dollar for down the line. Maybe Samsung would buy it; that could be quite the combo.

BTW, VAIO has some of the best laptops out there and they have versions with features at lots of price points. My preferred laptop brand is VAIO as it has most of the features I prefer in a good package.

The joke is making fun of Neogaf not the people losing their jobs.
Of course its clear, but its poor taste to use people losing their jobs as basis to make fun of someone. The same reason you do not make use of a car crash, or some unfortunate event to make a joke. It doesn't matter if he joke is on the incident, or use as a mean to make fun of someone.

Sony has 8 billion in cash, 38 billion in assets. 9 billion in long term debt and 45 BILLION in current liabilities
