Spencer Says He's Not Done Shopping (and then a rumor)

Jez from Windows Central said right after Microsoft announced the acquisitions at E3, a Microsoft executive DM’d him and said “this is just the beginning”.

More are coming.
MS is rolling in the money more than ever. Company stock is at an all time high, with the company now worth about $800 billion.

Their pockets have never been deeper.

Heck, maybe that "MS is buying EA" might be true after all...... after 10 years of rumours. lol

Hope not. Buying a major publisher like EA doesn’t really bolster the Xbox lineup. It might play keep away with some things. I’m guessing all licensed stuff would still be multiplat.

I like what they’ve done thus far because it’s strengthening the brand...by strengthening the brand. Not paying to own stuff that was already coming to the console as mutiplats.

Right now Microsoft needs well run studios that have good leadership, structure and have shown creativity. Not IPs.

I hope they by some Japanese and Korean studios, heck even Chinese....or at least create some in those territories.

Yeah, buying EA would be more beneficial to other publishers than to MS IMHO.

MS already have an abundance of licences that aren't being used, and the cost of buying into those sports franchises would be painful, unless they keep them multiplat, like Minecraft.

Everyone says Remedy when this comes up and from a fans view yeah great but I don't think MS think they will get a return on the investment as their games aren't massive sellers(sadly)

Their games may not be commercially successful, but at least they're often delaye... oh, yeah. (With that said, I'd love them to be in the fold.)

I think Remedy fits better now more than ever. Not just because they make solid games with strong characters and story. They are great setting up just the right amount of cliffhanger to make you wonder what’s next. There’s an passionate base that wants the next Alan Wake and Quantum Break...not because the games were amazing but rather people want to know where the stories go next.

If they went into episodic mode and released content every 6 months, I could see it capturing an audience that stays on Game Pass for it.

Game Pass changes the dynamic.

Remedy makes great games! Stylish, story driven, visually stunning, epic, fun games. I swear their one of the best in the business, IMO. Have you seen the trailer for the new game? No one has visuals or gameplay elements like Remedy. If they could bolster their content output, I can see them being a major staple in Microsofts family of developers. That s*** just needs to happen. Period.

The chances of it being Remedy probably depend on whatever this third game they are starting this year is. If its for Microsoft then they are probably getting bought. If its not then its not happening because I can't imagine they want to buy a studio locked into multiplats for years to come.

There's alot of developers who say they prefer staying independent. Then again, if they were to openly state that their looking to be acquisitioned, that lowers their price - its not a good look. Never let them see you sweat. Doesn't mean they aren't looking to be bought of the money is right though. Everybody has a price.

Hmm. I have no idea how that stuff works. When a developer sells off to a company, I assume their publishing contract sticks...or is there buyout options worked into those?

If that’s a factor, Obsidian just finishing their game while Microsoft was in the midst of a spending spree is an interesting target to watch.

Part of my thinking with Remedy is that them starting on another game is coming after Microsoft opening up the purse strings which is part of the reason people were thinking it could be QB 2 or AW 2 but if Microsoft wasn't interested in making some kind of deal with them on a game then I can't imagine they are interested in buying them now

Remedy would be a nice catch, I bet they’d love to get their hands on the slipspace engine.

Are they not working on another game as well?

I've always thought Remedy make great story based games, but as a cohesive whole, they're kinda jumbled.

They haven't figured out how to integrate the story and the gameplay together. It's always 'heres a gameplay bit for two rooms.' and then 5 minutes of story, then 'you can have two rooms of shooting' and then you get to open a box with text that extrapolates the story.

It's not just a pacing thing either, you can easily tell which areas are going to be used for shooty times by looking at the environments. "Oh, yeah, bad guys coming. There's a stack of gas cannisters sitting there and there"
Not entirely bad, just seems a bit old fashioned, compared to what the competition is doing.

And in their new game, there are areas where you're controlling six axis of directions for your character, and you're still meant to be able to shoot at/target people? $10 says there has to be crazy amounts of aim-assist.

(Also, I miss seeing Max Paynes constipated face in the comic panels)

Too bad MS didn’t save Visceral Games.
Ready at Dawn would be interesting as well. The Order was amazing looking.

They should acquire Spiders next...they have been steadily making better and bigger games but they are missing just a little more staff and budget to finally nail a AAA game or at least AA...I like their action RPG approach and their levelling systems and quests, from Mars,War Logs to Bound by Flame to Technomancer(which I liked a lot except the end backtracking)or their next one,Greedfall.

I'm hopeful that MS will turn things around next gen but damn do people buy PR speak here. At a certain point in life you have to realize how cheap talk is.

I think people are just genuinely excited about the acquisitions happening. They were rumored and now it seems they're true. People are just happy about that. What PR speak and cheap talk are you talking about?

Yeah picking them up now wouldn't make much sense, they tried two exclusives with them and neither one worked out.

EA makes no sense and the people who keep saying that they want it to happen just want to take games away from other consoles, there is zero logic behind that idea. It would cost far more than it's worth, it wouldn't add any depth to their exclusive line up and most of the things that make EA valuable would go away. All of the licensed titles would either have to remain multiplatform or would be cancelled so that would leave MS with NFS (they already have 2 racing games) Battle Field (They already have an FPS) and Dragon Age. They would end up having to lay off a ton of people and it would just be bad for the industry as a whole all while not bringing any benefit to MS, that's not even talking about how the vast majority of any value EA has comes from being multiplatform to begin with.

They should focus on starting up their own studios or buying smaller ones and building them up as needed, buying publishers would just cost too much and the money would never be made back.
